Who SHOULD win: ' VIEWS Leonardo DiCaprio. Every one of these people was great in their respective movies. As far as I know. I haven’t seen Pain and Glory. Also Marriage Story feels like an intimate portrait of two people you’re glad you don’t know. I’ve got nothing against Phoenix, but Leo is great in OUAT... IH and he gave an interview on a podcast the other day that I really liked, so I want him to win and so he should win. Joaquin Phoenix most certainly will win for his portrayal of the Joker. But should he? That, friends, is another matter. (Image: Warner Bros) Performance by an actor in a supporting role nominees: Tom Hanks: A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, Anthony Hopkins: THE TWO POPES, Al Pacino: THE IRISHMAN, Joe Pesci: THE IRISHMAN, Brad Pitt: ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD Who will win: Brad Pitt. There’s speculation that he’s back together with Jen and they’re already married and they’re expecting a baby and they’re broken up again I’m sorry. Who SHOULD win: Brad Pitt. Robert Pattinson better get out of my face. Brad Pitt is the handsomest man in the world. He’s been written off as a pretty boy all his life but he’s actually great in lots of movies. I know it. The Academy knows it. And now you know it. Performance by an actress in a leading role nominees: Cynthia Erivo: HARRIET, Scarlett Johansson: MARRIAGE STORY, Saoirse Ronan: LITTLE WOMEN, Charlize Theron: BOMBSHELL, Renée Zellweger: JUDY Who will win: Charlize Theron. Did you see her makeup? She is terrifying as Fox anchor Megyn Kelly. And the Academy loves physical transformations. Who SHOULD win: Saoirse Ronan. I haven't seen Little Women yet. I’m going with my lady friend next week. But I loved Ronan in Lady Bird and I finally figured out how to pronounce her name. I’m sure Renee Zellweger is very nice but I’m getting really tired of these music biopics. They are NEVER good. They’re always just okay. So no more biopics please. Rocketman, the Queen one, Frozen 2… enough is enough. As for Scarlett Johansson, I did not care for her character’s dancing. I was tempted to say Cynthia Erivo should win. She’s the only non-white actor nominated this year. But I think it’s better for the Academy to stare their diversity problem (and their black-women-can-only-get-nominated-if-they-play-certain-types problem) right in the face when only white people win. In 'Harriet', Cynthia Erivo (left) plays Harriet Tubman, the former slave who helped other slaves escape via the Underground Railroad. (Image: Focus Features) Performance by an actress in a supporting role nominees: Kathy Bates: RICHARD JEWELL, Laura Dern: MARRIAGE STORY, Scarlett Johansson: JOJO RABBIT, Florence Pugh: LITTLE WOMEN, Margot Robbie: BOMBSHELL Who will win: Laura Dern. The divorce lawyers are the best thing about Marriage Story and Dern stands out. She’s fierce and uncompromising and brutally honest. Who SHOULD win: Laura Dern. Speaking of honesty, I’ve only seen Marriage Story and Bombshell so that doesn’t leave me with a lot of options. Margot Robbie is okay in Bombshell. I don’t know how to pronounce it (yet), but Florence Pugh has a great name. READ MORE Academy Awards 2020: Here Are All The Oscars Nominees Best animated feature film of the year nominees: HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD, I LOST MY BODY, KLAUS, MISSING LINK, TOY STORY 4 Who will win: Toy Story 4. I was appalled to discover that of all the Toy Story’s, only Toy Story 3 has won this award. But this is the end of the road for Woody and the gang, so I think it’ll be a sentimental favourite. Also the movie is really good. I’ve been quoting it with my kids nonstop. (Actually, we did stop just recently - sorry Toy Story 4.) Who SHOULD win: Missing Link. Hugh Jackman is a global treasure and he is delightful in this movie. As is Zach Galifianakis, one of the best comedians of all time. It’s weird and fun and I liked it a lot. How to Train Your Dragon was only semi-fun to begin with and the franchise has gotten worse with time, I assume from the trailers. I’m not even sure how it got here - or how it’s better than Frozen 2, which, as it happens, is also not good. Same for Klaus, which tries way too hard. I haven’t seen I Lost My Body because it looks really sad. But I’ll get to it. 'Missing Link' has some very decent laughs in it. Don't snub it! (Image: United Artists) Achievement in directing nominees: Martin Scorsese:THE IRISHMAN, Todd Phillips: JOKER, Sam Mendes: 1917, Quentin Tarantino: ONCE UPON A TIME...IN HOLLYWOOD, Bong Joon Ho: PARASITE Who will win: Sam Mendes. 1917 is a British war movie and the Academy loves that kind of thing. Who SHOULD win: Martin Scorsese. I’m tempted to say Bong Joon Ho, but I haven’t seen Parasite yet. I hear it’s great and I believe what I hear. But Scorsese somehow made me love a 75-hour movie that re-explores themes he’s already gone over in other movies and forced me to look at those themes totally differently. That’s an achievement. Best international feature film of the year nominees: CORPUS CHRISTI, HONEYLAND, LES MISÉRABLES, PAIN AND GLORY, PARASITE Who will win: Parasite. Who SHOULD win: I haven’t seen any of these movies, so I’m going with the one I will eventually see and like the most.

  • The Departed Talent: Matt Damon, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jack Nicholson
The Departed Talent: Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone. Date of review: Thursday the 12th of October, 2006. Director: Martin Scorsese Classification: MA (15+) Duration: 152 minutes We rate it: Five stars. For any serious cinemagoer or lover of film as an art form, the arrival of a new film by Martin Scorsese is a reason to get very excited indeed. Scorsese has long been regarded as one of the greatest of America’s filmmakers; since the mid-1980s he has been regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in the world, period. With landmark works like Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) and Bringing Out the Dead (1999) to his credit, Scorsese is a director for whom any actor will go the distance, and the casts the director manages to assemble for his every project are extraordinarily impressive. As a visualist Scorsese is a force to be reckoned with, and his soundtracks regularly become known as classic creations; his regular collaborators, including editor Thelma Schoonmaker and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus are the best in their respective fields. Paraphrasing all of this, one could justifiably describe Martin Scorsese as one of the most important and interesting directors on the face of the planet. The Departed, Scorsese’s newest film, is on one level a remake of a very successful Hong Kong action thriller from 2002 called Infernal Affairs. That film, written by Felix Chong and directed by Andrew Lau, set the box office on fire in Hong Kong and became a cult hit around the world.

  • Once Upon a Time … in Santa Clarita: Tarantino Movie Opens Thursday
By: Caleb Lunetta, July 25, 2019 Once Upon a Time … In Santa Clarita: Tarantino movie opens Thursday Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino is known for his genre-defying blockbuster films that combine elements of art house, violence and comedy in his Academy Award-winning films. And the San Fernando Valley resident calls Santa Clarita “a special place,” according to local film property owners who have played host to the luminary for his latest film that debuts tonight, “Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood.” The latest installment in the Tarantino filmography follows the story of “a faded television actor and his stunt double (who) strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles,” according to IMDb.com. The film features Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. Tarantino and movie fans were given a teaser trailer where the opening shot was that of Melody Ranch’s “Main Street” set. Veluzat said that the production team had been working with the studio for a couple months, from planning to setting up to filming, and for him, it was a special experience. Tarantino has filmed two of his last three movies at Melody Ranch in Newhall, according to studio manager Daniel Veluzat, and he’s praised the SCV in interviews and conversations with local residents. He really does like it here, said Veluzat, in reference to a question about why Tarantino has filmed his movies at Melody Ranch. “He calls it a special place,” he said. And on Thursday night, “Once Upon a Time” opens in theaters across the country, including the Santa Clarita Valley, featuring scenes shot at both Melody Ranch and the Saugus Speedway.

  • Collaborations of Martin Scorsese with De Niro And
From Realism to Reinvention: Collaborations of Martin Scorsese with De Niro and DiCaprio By Travis C. Yates Martin Scorsese is considered by many to be the greatest film director of the past quarter- century. He has left an indelible mark on Hollywood with a filmography that spans more than four decades and is as influential as it is groundbreaking. The proverb goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The same could be said of cinema, though one popular filmmaking theory refutes this. French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard said of the filmmaking process, “The cinema is not a craft. It is an art. It does not mean teamwork. One is always alone on the set as before the blank page” (Naremore 9). Film theorist Robert Stam discusses this concept of auteur theory in Film Theory: An Introduction , an idea that originated in postwar France in the 1950s. It is the view that the director is solely responsible for the overall look and style of a film. As Colin Tait submits in his article “When Marty Met Bobby: Collaborative Authorship in Mean Streets and Taxi Driver ,” the theory is a useful tool at best, incorrect at worst. Tait criticizes the theory in that it denies the influence of other artists involved in the production as well as the notion of collaboration. It is this spirit of collaboration in Scorsese films featuring two specific actors, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, which this this paper will examine. Scorsese has collaborated with De Niro on eight films, the first being Mean Streets in 1973 and the most recent being Casino in 1995.

PEOPLE WAS MACHT EIGENTLICH ... ... FRANK ABAGNALE? OLIVIA AT THE LAEMMLE ROYAL | 11523 Santa Monica Blvd. Already underway and screening daily through Sept. 5 at the Laemmle Royal is a new digital restoration of Jacqueline Audry’s trailblazing 1951 feature Olivia, one of the first films, French or otherwise, to deal with female homosexuality. Set in a 19th-century Parisian finishing school for girls, the film depicts the struggle between two head mistresses (Edwige Feuillere and Simone Simon) for the affection of their students, and how one girl’s (Marie-Claire Olivia) romantic urges stir jealousy in the house. Audry, one of the key female filmmakers of post-World War II France, stages this feverish chamber drama (based on a novel by the English writer Dorothy Bussy) with a delicate yet incisive touch, allowing the story’s implicit sensuality to simmer ominously without boiling over into undue hysterics. Lesbian dramas would soon become more explicit, but few have matched Olivia’s unique combination of elegance and eroticism.
