World News The Coronavirus Musa Afzal

The coronavirus is a virus that originally stemmed from a seafood market in Wuhan, China. It has expanded to almost every , except for , , and Antarctica. The coronavirus can be spread through touch or even if you breathe the same air as a coronavirus victim. There are more than 43,100 cases today around the world. The death toll has hit over 1,100, and continues to rise, while China has decided to restart their economy. More people on cruise ships are tested positive for the virus. These people are stranded on the cruise ships, not allowed to leave their room. However, though the virus has been tested positive in Chicago, the virus has only harmed infants, elderly, or people with pre-existing health conditions. Therefore, scientists have concluded that the virus must only damage people with weak immune systems. The Crisis in Balochistan Matilda McLaren

4

Amidst the dusty and mountainous terrain of Balochistan, , a crisis has begun which is threatening to be irreversible. Due to climate change, the inhabitants of Balochistan are experiencing spasmodic weather patterns, extreme water shortages, and droughts. This past winter in the North of Balochistan, there was snow for the first time in nearly a decade. As if this isn’t unusual enough, the popular city of Quetta (dubbed as the coldest city in the country) has had notably high temperatures. The once-popular Karez system, an irrigation method where groundwater is converted into taps through tunnels, has been long dormant because of the lack of freshwater available. Solutions to this crisis have been explored, but much more effort has been put in by the federal government rather than the local government of Pakistan. Jam Kamal-led, a politician in the Pakistani government, has mostly shown indifference to the situation at hand. However, the provincial government of Pakistan has made an effort in creating the CCED, or Climate Change and Environment Department, to handle growing environmental crises. The best solution to the shortage of freshwater has been suggested by many as installing reservoirs and/or dams. However, a lack of motive and an unwillingness of the Pakistani government to cooperate with the federal government is the reason why Balochistan is still in trouble. Spread the word and inform others of the situation in Pakistan.

Black History Month By: Aniyah Nelson

This month is black history month. A month that celebrates all the amazing African Cultures. There are so many unsung heroes but I’m can only tell you about one. GEORGE CRUM the inventor of the magnificent POTATO CHIP. George Crum was a chef at a restaurant called Cary’s Moon Lakehouse. One day in 1853 a customer came into the restaurant and asked for some french fries. So George cooked the french fries and brought them out to him but every time George brought out the french fries they were too thick so the last time George brought them out he made them really thin and crispy. So he gave the customer and he said George you have yourself a great new invention. Then George tasted them and agreed. After that Goerge put a bowl of chips on each table and that is sorta how the potato chip came to life. If you would rather Watch instead of Read about some of the most amazing unsung heroes check out “Kevin Hart’s Guide To Black History” On .

Did you see this portrait of Harriet Tubman? It’s hanging at the end of the 100 hall. Mrs. Dietel’s ACE class is learning about famous African and created this (more to come!) in celebration of Black History Month

T he Loss of a Hero, Legend, and an Amazing Daughter By Arnav Pillay and Jashwanth Bathineni “ I'm so late “ was probably all this legend and his daughter were thinking about at the breakfast table. Last Sunday, on January 26th, 2020, another tragedy piled up on the huge landfill of them. But this one really hurt the whole NBA and sports in general. Kobe Bryant, a legend who played for 20 seasons and changed the game of basketball. He was found dead, along with his 13-year old daughter Gianna “GiGi” Bryant. Several other people have been reported dead, such as Gianna’s friends and teammates, a baseball coach for OCC. They were headed to Kobe’s Mamba Sports Academy, but got lost and crashed due to foggy weather conditions. They were found in Calabasas, California. We will always remember Kobe and Gianna. It also seems that Kobe’s “Mamba Mentality” had made the current NBA players go off for crazy performances. Players who currently are wearing numbers 8 or 24 are switching to honor the legend. More updates will be coming about the crash soon. #MambaOut #MambacitaOut R.I.P Kobe and Gianna “GiGi” Bryant

S uper Bowl 54 By: Grace Bittlingmaier, Arnav Pillay, And Jashwanth Bathineni The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers faced off on Sunday, February 2nd. It was one of the best, and intense Super Bowls of all time! At the start of the game, the 49ers won the toss and decided to kick off first. That Chiefs drive ended in a punt and a fail. Then, the 49ers had the ball and did really well and ended up scoring a , which is worth 3 points. Then the Chiefs had really set up the game tempo as they had Patrick Mahomes run the ball in for the first touchdown of Super Bowl 54(6 points). After that, the 49ers had also responded back as they scored a touchdown as well. Now, the score was equal and equal. 10-10. Next, the 49ers again had a good drive and made a field goal, snatching the lead with 3 points. The Chiefs next tried hard, but came up short and had to punt it. The 49ers defensive front was killing it as the pressure kept coming for Patrick Mahomes. Nick Bosa and the rest of the front were doing an outstanding job. This led to the 49ers scoring another touchdown, making it 20-10, 49ers up top. Now, the pressure was really high and Patrick Mahomes was known to perform well under it. In a matter of minutes, we had

12

the Patrick Mahomes we know and love back. He was running, and passing, and faking and so much more! With all this to handle, the 49ers couldn’t tolerate the skills and it led in a touchdown for Mahomes and his crew. This was it. If the 49ers could do good on this next drive the game would be over for Kansas City. Guess What? The game continued! The 49ers failed on that drive, finishing it with 2 sacks and 2 incomplete passes. Now the Chiefs had the ball. Patrick Mahomes threw a lob to Tyreek Hill in the open field to lead up to a touchdown which was where the Chiefs had taken the lead! With less than 2 minutes on the clock, the 49ers had one last chance to take home the Vince Lombardi trophy. At the end of the drive, there was 1 sack, 5 incomplete passes, 1 first down, annnnd….NO Points! That was it! The Chiefs had won! Or had they? Nope, there was still a minute and a half left in the game, and the 49ers still had all three of their timeouts. The Chiefs' drive this time was phenomenal with another touchdown! That put them up by 11! With seconds left in the game, the 49ers drive wasn’t so great ending with an interception and the Chiefs winning in their final drive! What a comeback! The Chiefs were down 10 in the 3rd quarter and in the last 10 minutes of the 4th quarter, they ended up defeating the 49ers 20-31. Mahomes also won the Super Bowl 54 MVP, and Andy Reid had finally won his first-ever Super Bowl through his 21 seasons of coaching. What a Cinderella story for the Chiefs! Now that’s what I call a wonderful Super Bowl, (or in Mrs.Dietel’s words: SUPER TAZON!! ;)!

Spring Training By: Grace Bittlingmaier Spring training is coming fast. Games are starting February 22 and the MLB is hyped! Let’s look at the biggest questions the league is looking at until then. Cubs: What is the situation with Kris Bryant? Nicolas Castellanos? The Cubs seem to have a lot of questions with a shaky bullpen and issues with budgeting (On the contrary, the Sox are the biggest spenders at over $200 million!) along with a rookie skipper. White Sox: What are the plans with Hose Abreu? Ian Nova? The Sox are looking up with one of the hottest prospects in the minors: Luis Robert (OF) Other big questions: Where is Josh Donaldson heading? It’s decided: the MLB is trying robotic umpires for spring training - let’s hope they see how bad this turns out before they mess up the regular season, too! Where in the world will Mookie Betts go? Where is Ozuna and his magical bat going? What will the punishment for the Astros sign-stealing scandal be? All this and more in the next issue of Spartan Life.

Glen Crest Teams

What’s Happening in Girls' Basketball?

Girls Basketball - Our preseason opener against Wheaton Christian brought a W to both the 7th and 8th-grade teams, and we hope to do even better throughout the season. In our second and final preseason game, we played Saint Pet’s A and B teams. 7th grade lost both their games, but we will come back swinging and well-prepared for our home opener against Glenside. 8th grade, on the flip side, won both of their St. Pet’s games to end 3-0 in the preseason, while 7th grade ended 1-2. At our home opener, both 7th and 8th grade won big - by more than 30 points each against Glenside! ON to the next game! (Where 7th and 8th grade both picked up a non-conference win). ON Thursday, the 29 of January, Glen Crest traveled to Westlake where eighth grade did very well, where seventh grade came up just short, but we still ended the month 1-1 in the conference, and eighth grade is undefeated! In the first few games of February, the 7th and 8th grade experienced each experienced crushing defeats to Herrick, our conference rival, but both came back strong against Marquardt the next day with a pair of big wins! The next day, at our home game against O’Neill, 8th grade got a big win, and 7th grade followed it up with a tough game that got blown open in the final quarter for a big win! Next, we had a nonconference game at Hadley and Eighth grade needs to continue their teamwork and Spartan spirit to win, and 7th grade will need to work hard at practice and games until they are better than the best! To do this, we need loud and proud home crowds (along with great teamwork and smart gameplay) . Our home games in February are the 6th, 11th, 20th, and 25th! Come and cheer us on! GO SPARTANS!!!

16

What’s Happening in Boys' Volleyball? Boys Volleyball

We started the season with two huge wins against Glenside, each team stomping their opponents in all the matches. Then, moving on to Westlake, was a bit rougher, but each team managed to min at least one match per. Herrick, like in basketball, was the hardest team yet, and both 7th and 8th grade experienced hard losses, but we’ll get ‘em next time! Then, we moved on to Marquardt and picked up two more big wins, trouncing Marquardt, too. We went up against a tough O’Neill and ended this issue with a win against Marquardt for the eighth-graders, while 7th grade struggled against the improved line, but we’ll get ‘em all in the second round of conference games. -Come to our home games in February on the 4th, 5th, 10th, 19th, 20th, and 27th! Crowd the stands ‘till they bust! GO SPARTANS!!!

Run Day: Do We Need It? By: Brianna Bohl and Abby Edwards Run day… a very controversial topic at Glen Crest Middle School. While some people think that run day isn’t the best day of the week, others really enjoy it. While run day can be very beneficial to your health, it can also be stressful and demanding- which is not good for your well-being. Run day is certainly good for your health, but it is not always fun and can be stressful, especially when you aren’t the strongest runner in your class. Run day does have some good sides, although most don’t think so. Run day can improve your stamina because you do it every week. If you are a cross country or track runner, this can be very helpful and you can use run day for your advantage. Running can also reduce the risks of cancer. In addition, running is good for your heart, and overall puts you in a better mood for the rest of the day. Plus, it wakes you up when you run in the morning, and this is helpful for those of you who have gym early. However, run day also has its downsides. Run day can leave you with an injury if you aren’t careful, especially when you are outside or with a lot of people. Run day can also cause high-stress levels when teachers grade you based on your athleticism. This is good for some people, but for those who aren’t as athletic, this can be a huge difficulty. Everyone has different running paces, so to be graded on how fast you run (800-meter run), can be very frustrating. Lastly, some people enjoy doing sports in gym, so they really dread run day and would prefer to keep playing sports than taking a day out of each week to run. I know that this is a complaint that I hear a lot. All in all, run day can be very helpful to your health, but there are still many drawbacks to run day. While run day isn’t the most fun day of the week, it is one of the most important. Here are what some of the other students think of run day:

“I feel run day is a good thing because it gives us a chance to work ourselves a little harder than we would in our everyday P.E. activities. This develops perseverance, which is a long term life skill. Having perseverance and determination will lead to success.” -8th grader at Glen Crest

“I don’t like run day very much because it physically hurts sometimes and not everyone can run that much. People use run day to show off and it is kind of stressful.” - 7th grader at Glen Crest

“I like run day because it helps my body to get longer distances when running.” - 6th grader at Glen Crest

Lunch: That's All The Time I Have!!! By: Mrs. Dietel Twenty minutes. That’s the amount of time that students at Glen Crest have to eat lunch each day. As a matter of fact, it’s usually less than that. This twenty-minute time period includes waiting in line to get your food and paying, plus time to clean up afterward. Now, I understand why the lunch periods are run this way. One reason is that Spartan Hall is not big enough to support an entire grade’s worth of students at one time. That means we have to schedule at least 5-6 lunch sessions. Dividing the period into two sessions is the easiest solution to that problem. Another reason is that the lunch periods are already spread out about as far as they can go. If we made the sixth graders eat lunch any earlier, they’d need a scheduled snack later in the day. And, as it is, the seventh graders are drooling as we discuss foods in the fifth-period Spanish class right before lunch. Sometimes I wonder if the students can hear my own stomach growling. If we made the lunch periods longer, the eating times would be even more exaggerated. The only real solution that I can think of is to have the periods at different lengths or have bells for some classes to be dismissed while others continue class. I’m guessing that would create all sorts of issues. Can you imagine a subletting you out in the middle of the period or a teacher scheduled to teach two different classes that overlap? Plus, if we lengthened the lunchtime, then rec would certainly be shortened or eliminated and a lot of students need that downtime in the middle of the day. I’m not really sure what we can do to fix this, but I do know that several seventh-grade teachers have filled rooms every lunch period and one of the reasons is that students need more time to eat. When my room is filled during sixth period, I feel even more exhausted at the end of the day. The students in my classes suffer and that’s not fair to them. I’m trying to be more aware of what I personally need in order to be a strong teacher, but I can’t help but feel badly when I close my room to students during lunch who just want a place to leisurely eat their lunch. Perhaps someone with better scheduling skills can figure out a solution. Until then, plan accordingly because…..chew, swallow, chew, swallow ...twenty minutes is all you have.

An Overview of Aladdin:

Since the 1992 animated film was released, Aladdin has captured the hearts of many. A street urchin who uses genie-power to win a kingdom and woo a princess is one of the most popular tales. “A Whole ” topped the Billboard charts and won an Academy Award. It’s popularity rendered a stage version on Broadway in 2014 and a live-action movie remake in 2019. However, long before the music of Alan Menken made Aladdin a classic in modern musical history, the story’s origins lie in the Arabian Nights, One Thousand and One Nights, and originally is set in China. The diverse history and numerous remakes and adaptations only solidify its place among classic literature. The ‘rags to riches’ tale featuring a young hero who has to learn an important lesson, an exotic setting, a good healthy dose of magic, a beautiful heroine, and an evil villain, has certainly stood the test of time. Not to mention, those catchy tunes are sure to entertain in the retelling of this story.

Aladdin Movie! Written by: Eva Nita Recently the movie Aladdin came out! The movie was a big hit and many people enjoyed it. If you don’t know what the movie Aladdin is here is some info about the movie. The movie is a musical fantasy film where Aladdin is a poor thief who steals things that he needs to survive and people don’t really like him. Aladdin says that the princess (Jasmine) was getting into a little bit of trouble so Aladdin uses his theft skills to help him out. Aladdin finds a golden lamp he picks it up and starts to rub it. A magical genie comes out of the lamp and says that he can give Aladdin three wishes but they can’t be making someone fall in love with you or money so Aladdin had to think for a moment. Aladdin told the genie that he wanted to be a prince so that he might have a chance for the princess to fall in love with him. Aladdin returns to the castle and Jasmine didn’t even recognize him! Eventually Jasmine finds out that it was all fake but she

24

realizes that she was still in love with him anyway. The movie has a 3 and a half star rating and I totally recommend that you watch it!

Questions…

Dear Spartan and Sparky, I am a busy person and lately some of my teachers have been giving me a lot of homework! Sometimes I stay up really late doing homework when I should be in bed. At school I get really tired and just get more and more homework. I try to get it done in ACE but I can't manage to get all of it done. Do you have a way that I can manage my time better? From, Tired and Helpless

Response...

Dear Tired and Helpless, From one overstuffed schedule to another, I get it. You do get used to balancing everything, but sometimes that means giving a little. Ask your teachers for passes during lunch, or maybe come for before school library. Also, write out your weekly schedule and hang it somewhere you’ll see, like your bedroom door, so you know on each day precisely how much time you have to get the work done. Additionally, chunk up your work. Try to finish your math at lunch, your literacy in ace, and science at home, etc. Depending on how much teachers give on one day where you may have activities, there really is no solution except catching up on sleep another day, but remember that organization is key to success. Good luck! From, Spartan and Sparky

Questions…

Dear Spartan and Sparky, You know how we have to change for gym? Well, I hate it!!! It's so weird that you have to change in front of your friends. Usually I just change in the bathroom but sometimes someone is in there and we only have five

minutes to change. Also it smells really bad in there and the lockers are really small. Do you have any suggestions to help me get over my fear? From, P.E. Paranoid

Response…

Dear P.E. Paranoid, I can relate. At the beginning of the year I was so scared of changing in front of people and I wondered what they would think. Now it’s really no big deal. Just focus on changing quickly and not worrying what other people are doing. Of course you can talk but just keep changing while you talk to people and you´ll be fine. From, Spartan and Sparky

Book Reviews

Set just “6 minutes into the future”, an anti-immigrant national governement has begun forcing Muslim American citizens into internment camps for “security” purposes. Seventeen-year-old Layla Amin and her parents are among the first families who are taken from their California homes and brought to a high-security camp in the desert. While Layla’s parents are afraid to do anything to anger the violent Camp Director, Layla, a few new friends she meets in the camp, decide that they must resist, they must try to fight for their freedom. Helped by her boyfriend on the outside, and from an unexpected source inside the camp, the efforts of Layla and her friends begin to attract attention from the national media. Layla’s situation is terrifying but her reasons for resisting are inspirational, reminding us how important it is to speak up when we see something wrong, even if it puts us in a difficult position.

Fast-paced and suspenseful. I highly recommend this book!

Dead But Alive

By Evelyn Pak

I’m going to tell you about the day I died. But the thing is, I am still alive. So let me bring you back to the day. It was Saturday, in the middle of August I woke up in my room, sun gleaming in through the window, shining in my eyes. My eyes burned from the luminosity of the sun and I shut them while slowly getting up from my bed. I pulled my body with all my might over to my closet and picked out the easiest outfit I could get. It was easily 80 degrees outside but I decided to just put on sweatpants and a sweatshirt. I left my bed unmade, splashed my face with water, and walked down my stairs. As I was walking into my kitchen, I saw a black shadow glide away from the room, and into the living room. No one was home, I lived alone. I slowly walked over to the living room, watching for any sign of someone. I turned my head around the corner of the door and waited for a noise to hear. Nothing. I looked into the room and saw nothing. I silently shuffled into the room and searched under the couch and by the Tv. Nothing. I realized that I was out of my mind and just being a maniac. I shook my head with disbelief and walked over to the kitchen to make breakfast. After I ate, I

stood up to toss my dishes into the sink and to get ready for work. I went to check my phone and noticed that the time was already a quarter to 9. “Shoot,” I thought. I was gonna be late to work. “No, no, no, no, no!” I screamed. I rushed over to my room, threw on dirty dress pants and a blazer, pulled my hair down from my messy bun while running my fingers through my hair and ran out the door with my keys. I stumbled down the patio staircase and missed the last step with my right foot, falling head-first down into the grass. I hit the ground hard, pain spreading through my shoulders down to my legs. My white blazer was covered in grass stains and I had managed to rip a hole in the knee of my pants. I gradually pushed my body up, letting my feet balance on the ground and stood up. “Dang, what a bad day,” I said out loud to myself. I pulled my phone out of my purse and proceed to call my boss and tell him I was sick. As it dialed, a sharp pain ran right through my stomach, striking me to the ground. As I fell, the same black, gliding figure flowed away from right where the pain hit my stomach. I quickly looked away as a ringing sound filled my ears, flowing through my brain making me shut my eyes with agony. I tried using my arms to push me up but as I did, my arms gave out smacking the ground with my upper body. I felt a numbing pain in the pit of my stomach, touching it and as I look down seeing dark red blood fill out my white blazer. I lift my undershirt looking for something similar to a gunshot or stab wound but nothing shows. Wiping my stomach with my shirt, a seizing pain shoots through me. I didn’t make any extra effort to get up, instead reaching for my phone to call my mom. “Mom, something happened,” I said. No response. “Mom.” Nothing. “Mom please, I need your help.” She doesn’t respond for another minute and I hang up. I contemplate whether or not to call 911. There’s no wound but my pain feels horrible. I decide to call 911, immediately, I get connected but again, no answer. No one says anything into my phone. It’s like no one can hear me. Still laying on the floor, I scream as loud as I can but nothing comes out and I feel like no one will ever come to help me. I try to pick myself up and stand up, but I fall again. Pain overwhelms me and I try to relax. On my stomach, I look up at the sky as if the sky darkened. My eyes get filled with the sight of the black figure that hurt me in the first place. I scream with fear as the black figure swirls around my mangled body. Faster and faster it circled around me. Pain surges into my stomach and my vision goes black. Nothing. I could no longer see anything. Just black. I try to open my eyes but the feeling of blackness surrounds me. I try putting my arm up to see if I could feel anyone or anything near me. As I put my hand up, I felt a hard, smooth surface. I opened my eyes and saw the slightest vision of my hand. I put my arm by my side and pushed my body up. Picking myself up, my head hits something and I fall back to the lying position from before. “What the heck,” I tell myself. “Where am I?” “Help!” I scream. “Someone help me please!” No one responds. I then realized that I was stuck. I didn’t know where but no matter how hard I tried to escape the tiny black box, I couldn’t. Little did I know, that I was never coming back out.
