    “Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's”--Doc Watson, Clarence Ashley, et.al. (1960-1962) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by Steve Kaufman (guest post)* Album cover In 1960, Smithsonian historian Ralph Rinzler convinced the virtually unknown Clarence “Tom” Ashley, Doc Watson, Gather Carlton, Jack Johnson, Fred Price and Clint Howard to walk into the studio and record their mountain heritage music. Ralph Rinzler met Clarence at an Old Time Fiddler’s Convention. Ashley hadn’t played banjo for many years, but Ralph convinced him to pick it back up again and record it. Doc Watson didn’t own an acoustic guitar at the time. He had been playing in a rockabilly band playing square dances and the like. Doc honed his instrumental skills playing fiddle tunes on the guitar. Doc told me that the square dance bands he played in did not have a fiddle player so he played the tune as the fiddle would. This combination of Clarence on banjo and Doc on guitar and banjo, along with Fred Price and Gaither Carlton on fiddle, make an old-time band that is authentic and powerful. Seventeen songs make up this collection, of which T. Clarence Ashley wrote nine. It seems odd that he would credit the song as being by T.C. Ashley. He would credit his singing as Tom Ashley. Doc would credit him as Clarence throughout Doc’s long career. I’ve heard Doc mention Clarence on many occasions. These are the original tracks to this classic “Old Time” recording. It was recorded in Shouns, Tennessee; Saltville, Virginia; and Deep Gap, North Carolina.

Vernacular regions are delineated by recording and mapping businesses and organizations whose identities contain a key element of a regional label, such as: East Tennessee auto sales, Delta awning, etc.. Data are collected using a popular internet telephone directory. The number of listings occurring in each county is recorded for each regional label. The county totals for each region are used to generate population-weighted county index values (CIV).

A Brief Overview of the Melungeons By Wayne Winkler For more than a century, the Melungeons have been the focus of anthropologists, social scientists, and (especially) feature writers for newspapers and magazines. The most common adjective used to describe the Melungeons is “mysterious;” no one seems to know where the Melungeons originated. More significantly, the Melungeons did not fit into any of the racial categories which define an individual or group within American society, they were considered by their neighbors neither white, black, nor Indian. The Melungeons are a group of mixed ethnic ancestry, found primarily in northeastern Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, southeastern Kentucky. Similar groups of “mysterious” people, or at least remnants of these groups, are found all along the Atlantic seaboard. While these other groups have no known connection to the Melungeons, they have suffered similar problems due to the difficulty of placing them within an established racial category. Anthropologists called them “racial islands” or “tri­racial isolates.” Several surnames are associated with the Melungeons, including Collins, Gibson, Goins, Mullins, Bowlin. The Melungeons have historically been associated with Newman’s Ridge in Hancock County, Tennessee. Newspapers and magazines have found the Melungeons a fascinating topic since the 1840s, but the Melungeons have resented most of the publicity they have received over the years. Most of the articles on the Melungeons speculated on the legends, folklore, and theories surrounding their ancestry.

Brothers, Jr. 1 February 2013 1 Introduction Speaking of his ancestry, Lincoln once humorously remarked, “I don’t know who my grandfather was, but I am much more concerned to know what his grandson will be.” The Melungeons are a people mired in the past. These are people lost in plain sight in the history of the United States. This is a story of a people moving from being unknown in the fabric of society at large, yet rising to national prominence and recognition. The Melungeons are a people identified through genealogy, family stories, legends, legal records, and scientific investigation. Their origins are as mysterious and exotic as the history of people themselves. Who are the Melungeons of the US South? The Melungeons are considered lost people in the life and lore of American History. Their very existence is steeped in mystery and controversy. They have been an enigma in American History. Are they the lost peoples of America? Will Allen Dromgoole, of Nashville Tennessee, educated as a lawyer but forced to turn to writing because women could not be lawyers in the 1800’s, wrote a series of articles for “the Nashville Sunday American” and “the Boston Arena” between 1890 and 1891 about her discoveries concerning the Malungeons. She was not the first to put in print information about the Melungeons but was the most read in her time. Her accounts of her personal visits to the mountains of Tennessee were unfortunately very derogatory and derisive to the very people who helped her understand their culture and their times.
