Tribute to former Member, Mr Martyn Quayle

The Speaker: Hon. Members, before adjourning the House, it is my sad duty to announce the passing over the summer of our former colleague, George Martyn Quayle. Mr Quayle was born in 1959, the son of George Douglas Quayle, of Marown, and Elaine Evelyn (née Corrin). He was educated at St Ninian’s and Ballakermeen High Schools before joining the Civil Service. He then joined Farmers Ltd, rising to Company Secretary and Managing Director between 1986 and 2002. In the 2001 General Election, he was elected as Member of the for at his first attempt and he retained his seat at the 2006 General Election. During his time in Government, he served in positions in Tourism and Leisure, Trade and Industry, the Office of Fair Trading and Chairman of the Isle of Man Water Authority. During his second term, he served as Minister for Home Affairs, Tourism and Leisure and finally as Minister for Social Care. However, some Members will recall Martyn’s proud boast that one highlight of his political career was the front page of the Falkland Islands’ Penguin News following his visit there with the CPA in 2004. Martyn was a vigorous constituency MHK, a former chairman of the Young Farmers’ Club and Round Table, representing the Island in both organisations. He was also involved in Marown Football Club, Crosby Silver Band, Marown Royal Ploughing Match Society and many other community organisations. Martyn went into public service with a real sense it was part of his civic duty. He carried out every job he was asked to do with honesty and integrity, and we have lost a real gentleman in Manx politics. (Several Members: Hear, hear.) I would ask Hon. Members to stand with me for a moment’s silence.

Members stood in silence.

The Speaker: Thank you, Hon. Members. That concludes the business of the House today. May I remind you that nominations for the post of Chief Minister close at 5 p.m. today. Nominations should be given in writing to the Secretary of the House. Nominated candidates must hand their manifestos to the Secretary of the House by 5 p.m. on Thursday. The House will now stand adjourned until the next sitting, which will take place on 4th October in Chamber for the election of the Chief Minister. Thank you.

The House adjourned at 2.52 p.m.
