FRONT COVER: Two hours into the walk and the roads are packed with crowds of walkers in the Scottish Widows Parish Walk 2010. Event Main sponsors: Scottish Widows. Event Timing sponsors: Manx Telecom Editorial The Scottish Widows Parish Walk this year celebrated its 50th anniversary in the current format. The event continues to grow and develop, as many people on the island now see it as a “rite of passage” and overseas visitors make the trip to face one of the ultimate walking challenges in the world. Another record year for entries brings speculation that limits will eventually be introduced. However, such suggestions have been put forward for many years, as the following extract from this magazine twelve years ago, when a record entry of 595 was received in 1998 shows: “Every year we think it can’t get bigger but it does. We thought it was superb when we had 200 entries, now it’s almost 600. Now all attention turns to 1999 when bigger still could bring organisational problems.” Congratulations to all those who took part this in years event. You may have found it hard (or not!) but many of you will already be thinking of next year. Achieving your targets brings such satisfaction, and the accomplishment of finishing a full Parish is certainly something you will talk about for the rest of your life. A few talented walkers manage to complete 85 miles with little or no training, but for the rest of us it takes planning, training, and other events to get us prepared. There are many other events between now and next year in which you can enjoy yourself whilst improving your capabilities. For those who want to achieve greater things there is the Centurion walk coming up - 100 miles in 24 hours! However, all are welcome and encouraged to enter the End-to-End Walk on the Isle of Man in September. Walking from the Northern to the Southern end of the island through the most scenic parts of the island. Like the Parish, numbers are growing year on year.
