Bába Abstract: The authors evaluated the samples collected by Marninus De Smit in 1999 at the collection site of Katavothres, on the isle of Kefalinia, Greece. Key-words: Katavothers, Greece, Marin mollusc fauna Material and methods Sample collections were carried out in a southern bay of the isle of Kefalinia, on the coast of Katavothres (09.06.1999.) For the determination of the order of families we used Poppe, G. T.–Gotto, Y. (1991–1993) Vol. I-II. For the identification of species we gave preference to the following publications: Nordsieik, F. (1968, 1969, 1972) Poppe, G. T.–Gotto, Y. (1991, 1993), D’ Angeló–Gargiullo, S. (1978) and also Ghisotti, F.–Melone, G. (1971, 1972, 1975) Results The collections yielded species from Scaphopoda, Lamellibranchiata and Gastropoda class- es. Altogether 7697 individuals belonging to 188 species were collected. (Scaphopoda: 1 family 1 species, Lamellibranchiata: 30 families 90 species 3811 specimen, Gastropoda: 42 families 188 species 7697 specimen). From the Bivalvia the Musculus laevigatus is a cir- cumpolar, the Hiatellidae: Hiatella arctica is a boreal circumpolar species. From the Gastropoda the Trochidae: Clanculus striatus, Phasianellidae: Tricolia miniata are known as belonging to the Southern Mediterranean. Most probably they spread due shipping. From most of the species encountered 1-40 individuals were found. More than 100 indi- viduals were collected from the species below: Jujubinus striatus, Gibbula philberti, Truncatella subcylindrica, Alvania consociella, Bittium latreilli, Bittium reticulatum, Cerithium alucaster, Gibberula miliaria, Granulina clandestina. Summary From the alluvial deposits on an island near Greece 11 508 individuals from 279 species of 72 families from 3 orders were encountered. -

Taxonomy of Tropical West African Bivalves V. Noetiidae

Graham OLIVER and Rudo VON COSEL Abstract. — Five species of Noetiidae are described from tropical West Africa, defined here as between 23° N and 17°S. The Noetiidae are represented by five genera, and four new taxa are introduced : Stenocista n. gen., erected for Area gambiensis Reeve; Sheldonella minutalis n. sp., Striarca lactea scoliosa n. subsp. and Striarca lactea epetrima n. subsp. Striarca lactea shows considerable variation within species. Ecological factors and geographical clines are invoked to explain some of this variation but local genetic isolation could not be excluded. The relationships of the shallow water West African noetiid species are analysed and compared to the faunas of the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Panamic and Indo- Pacific regions. Stenocista is the only genus endemic to West Africa. A general discussion on the relationships of all the shallow water West African Arcoidea is presented. The level of generic endemism is low and there is clear evidence of circumtropical patterns of similarity between species. The greatest affinity is with the Indo-Pacific but this pattern is not consistent between subfamilies. Notably the Anadarinae have greatest similarity to the Panamic faunal province. Based on literature records and original samples, we review here the knowledge of the Lebanese marine bivalve biota, tracing its changes during the last 170 yr. The updated checklist of bivalves of Lebanon yielded a total of 114 species (96 native and 18 alien taxa), accounting for ca. 26.5% of the known Mediterranean Bivalvia and thus representing a particularly poor fauna. Analysis of the 21 taxa historically described on Lebanese material only yielded 2 available names. Records of 24 species are new for the Lebanese fauna, and Lioberus ligneus is also a new record for the Mediterranean Sea. Comparisons between molluscan records by past (before 1950) and modern (after 1950) authors revealed temporal variations and qualitative modifications of the Lebanese bivalve fauna, mostly affected by the introduction of Erythraean species. The rate of recording of new alien species (evaluated in decades) revealed later first local arrivals (after 1900) than those observed for other eastern Mediterranean shores, while the peak in records in conjunc- tion with our samplings (1991 to 2010) emphasizes the need for increased field work to monitor their arrival and establishment. -

Stagno d’Al - contres 31, 98166 Messina, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] 2Via Bologna, 18/A, 87032 Amantea, Cosenza, Italy; e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT First quantitative data on mollusc assemblages from the Capo d’Armi cliff, at the south en - trance of the Strait of Messina, provided a baseline for monitoring changes in benthic biod- iversity of a crucial Mediterranean area, whose depletion might already be advanced. A total of 133 benthic taxa have been recorded, and their distribution evaluated according to depth and seasonality. Bathymetric distribution showed scanty differences between the 4-6 meters and 12-16 meters depth levels, sharing all the 22 most abundant species. Season markedly affected species composition, since 42 taxa were exclusively recorded in spring and 35 in autumn, contrary to 56 shared taxa. The occurrence of some uncommon taxa has also been discussed. The benthic mollusc assemblages, although sampled in Ionian Sea, showed a clear western species composition, in accordance with literature placing east of the Strait the bound- ary line between western and eastern Mediterranean eco-regions. Otago Submarine Canyons: Mapping and Macrobenthos Bryce A. Peebles A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of Master of Science at the University of Otago December 2013 ii Abstract Submarine canyons are steep-sided “V’ or “U” shaped valleys that incise continental slopes worldwide. The geophysical and oceanographic features of submarine canyons can produce environmental conditions that cause benthic assemblages to be distinctive and productive compared to those of the adjacent slope; however the assemblages are potentially vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts, including bottom fishing. In order to help inform policy and management, submarine canyons need to be objectively defined topographically and their benthic assemblages characterised. A canyon network occurs off the Otago Peninsula, south-eastern New Zealand, but lack of detailed bathymetric data and adequate benthic sampling has limited study of the canyons. This thesis outlines a method of defining submarine canyon areas and examines epifaunal and infaunal assemblages of the Otago canyons and adjacent slope. Objective definition of the Otago canyon network in the GIS software GRASS along with the steps to use this methodology worldwide are described. Archival count data from 1966-74 on the epifauna are analysed using the PRIMER suite of programs to characterise epifaunal assemblages. Anomurans, polychaetes, asteroids and ascidians make up 70% of the epifaunal canyon assemblage. The epifaunal assemblage is clearly defined by water depth and recognisable from 380 m. Quantitative sampling of infauna in Saunders canyon, Papanui canyon and adjacent slope was carried out to examine infaunal community structure of the canyons and adjacent slope. Infaunal canyon assemblages are dominated by polychaetes, amphipods, ophiuroids, decapods and isopods in canyons, accounting for 75% of collected individuals. -

In freshwater Pul- monata, such as Limnaea, cilia on the foot assist in feeding when the animal is creeping suspended from the surface film (Brockmeier, 1898). Thecoso- matous Pteropoda feed exclusively by the aid of cilia on the unpaired middle lobe and the paired side lobes of the foot, and an evolutionary series- Cavolinia-Cymbulia-Gleba-can be traced in which there is a progressive elaboration in the perfection of this mechanism and an accompanying reduc- tion in the buccal mass and associated structures handed down from carni- vorous ancestors (Yonge, 1926). Only in the few prosobranchs which have acquired ciliary feeding mechanisms do these represent a modification of the ctenidia as in the Lamellibranchia. They also, as it is the aim of this paper to show, represent a modification of the rejection currents present in the mantle cavity of typical prosobranchs. Reaka-Kudla Department of Biology, UMCP Species richness and abundance of benthic bivalve and gastropod molluscs was determined over a depth gradient of 5 - 244 m at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas by deploying replicate benthic collectors at five sites at 5 m, 14 m, 46 m, 153 m, and 244 m for six months beginning in December 1993. A total of 773 individual molluscs comprising at least 72 taxa were retrieved from the collectors. Analysis of the molluscan fauna that colonized the collectors showed overwhelmingly higher abundance and diversity at the 5 m, 14 m, and 46 m sites as compared to the deeper sites at 153 m and 244 m. Irradiance, temperature, and habitat heterogeneity all declined with depth, coincident with declines in the abundance and diversity of the molluscs. Herbivorous modes of feeding predominated (52%) and carnivorous modes of feeding were common (44%) over the range of depths studied at Lee Stocking Island, but mode of feeding did not change significantly over depth. One bivalve and one gastropod species showed a significant decline in body size with increasing depth. Analysis of data for 960 species of gastropod molluscs from the Western Atlantic Gastropod Database of the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) that have ranges including the Bahamas showed a positive correlation between body size of species of gastropods and their geographic ranges. There was also a positive correlation between depth range and the size of the geographic range. -

For this purpose, the material collected from the area between the years 2005 and 2009, within the framework of different projects, was investigated. The investigation of the material taken from various biotopes ranging at depths between 0 and 100 m resulted in identification of 286 mollusc species and 27542 specimens belonging to them. Among the encountered species, Vitreolina cf. perminima (Jeffreys, 1883) is new record for the Turkish molluscan fauna and 18 species are being new records for the Turkish Levantine coast. A checklist of Iskenderun mollusc fauna is given based on the present study and the studies carried out beforehand, and a total of 424 moluscan species are known to be distributed in Iskenderun Bay.
