Marriage Records MARRIAGE RECORDS HARRISON COUNTY VIRGINIA-(WEST VIRGINIA 1784-1850 EDITED & ARRANGED BY EARLE H. MORRIS ?*T. V4T7 V^Sh^F0RT WAYNE PUBLIC LIBRARY FORT WAYNE, INDIANA Los Angeles Temple 1966 Genealogical Library HARRISON COUNTY VIRGINIA—WEST VIRGINIA This County was erected in the year 1784 out of Monongalia County Virginia: Monongalia in turn was erected during 1776 out of Augusta County. In turn Augusta was created in 1738 out of Orange County which had been formed from Spottsylvania in 1724. The latter county had been erected four years earlier out of parts of three of the Original Shires of Virginia - Essex - King & Queen and King William. The name given this oounty is taken from the distinguished Virginian, Benjamin Harrison, who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. FOREWORD The study of Vital Records presented here is not something entirely new but is a record for which there has long been a demand. The Works Progress Administration, Writers Project, copied many of the vital records in West Virginia. The Daughters of the American Revolu tion has interested itself in collecting the marriage records of the State. However neither of these agencies have compiled a complete picture of the records that pertain to those citizens who married in Harrison County (Va) West Virginia prior to 1851, The early marriage records of this State, during its frontier stage, were an extension of the system then in use in the older parts of Virginia. The Clerk of the County Court issued the "Marriage Bonds" which were merely declaratory or permissive of marriage, coupled with a "Bond". This "Bond" being an obligation of the Groom, joined in with by bondsmen of the Bride, payable to the Governor of the State. Later, lioenses were substituted for the Bond. Due to the lax requirements or lack of method used by the various Clerks to oare for these Marriage Bonds, many of them were lost. Fire raging in old wooden buildings took its toll while moisture destroyed untold thousands. Some of the early Clerks of Court considered these records as their personal property and took them with them when they west out of offioe. This is particularly true of thousands of the Bonds issued in early Hampshire County. The other destroying agencies helped to oreate & fcoid of approximately sixty-six years in this County1s marriage records* • great stumbling block in the path of the western migration. In a statistical study, such as this, the compiler must make a ohoiee of records and use those that will provide the greatest knowledge of the people in the area tinder study. This is particularly true during the frontier period* The records of Harrison County provide a typical choice. The Marriage Bonds purport to show: 1st, the contracting parties, 2nd, the date of issue, 3rd, the bondsmen, and in some cases do show the parents of the contracting parties. On the other hand the Minister's Return of Marriage gives nothing but the date of the marriage and the names of those joined together - and of course the officiating minister. Even a cursory examination discloses that there were more Marriage Bonds issued than there were Ministers Returns of marriage. Weighing the advantages and disadvantages of presenting one side or the other of the early records of Harrison County Virginia, your com piler presents a combination of the two records. As a base, the recorded Marriage Bonds are used. This in order to disclose intended marriages of many couples not further recorded in the county. To show what family relationships have been indicated. To record the date of the Marriage Bond which is rarely over two weeks prior to the actual date of marriage. To this then has been added the name of the Minister performing the ceremony. When the latter is not shown, it must be concluded that the officiating minister did not make a return of the marriage he performed. Unfortunately this was not an unusual occurrence in the 1780's and 1790's. It is believed that the combination of records herein presented will be of maximum use to searchers for family records as well a s to the historian tracing family migrations. Family names that were in error in either one of the two records available have been corrected in accordance with the Marriage Bond. This prooedure is taken because the Bond contained more names upon which to reach a conclusion. This compilation is submitted in full knowledge that duplication may appear, that family names have had many changes in spelling during the years and that many marriages duly authorized in this county may not appear. This is the record as found, developed and correoted to the extent that this is possible. • Dreams in Early Modern England: Frameworks of Interpretation
Dreams in Early Modern England: Frameworks of Interpretation by Janine Rivière A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of PhD Graduate Department of History, University of Toronto. © Copyright by Janine Rivière (2013) Abstract Dreams in Early Modern England: Frameworks of Interpretation, PhD (2013), Janine Rivière, Graduate Department of History, University of Toronto. While dreams as visions have received much attention from historians, less work has been undertaken on understanding more commonly experienced dreams that occurred in sleep. In this dissertation I seek to begin redressing this neglect. Two overarching questions focus the dissertation: How did early modern English people understand their dreams? And did these understandings change in response to significant developments in English culture? To answer these questions I explore early modern English theories, beliefs and experiences of dreams through a close study of key medical, demonological, philosophical, spiritual, oneirocritic and private writings. I suggest that in the period 1550-1750 there were three principal frameworks used to understand dreams: (1) health of the body and mind, (2) prediction and (3) spirituality. These three frameworks coexisted, either reinforcing or contesting one another throughout the period. The framework of health saw dreams as natural products of the body and mind that revealed the overall health of the dreamer. In the model of prediction, dreams were deemed significant, yet encoded, clues to the future that required careful interpretation. Finally, in spiritual frameworks, dreams were conceived as sent by God, angels or the Devil. Since early modern English writings reveal a diversity of natural and supernatural theories about dreams that never really “declined,” a study of them also helps to complicate ideas about the “disenchantment of the world." Finally, I also suggest that early modern English writings on dreams reveal the perceived vulnerability of the dreamer to internal and external forces.

Copyright 1989 by Martha & Bill Reamy Printed in the U.S.A. Published 1989 by FAMILY LINE PUBLICATIONS INTRODUCTION Every effort has been made to achieve accuracy in this project, but interpreting the enumerator's hand-written material has posed problems. As an aid to deciphering many poorly written and misspelled names, the "Wood's Baltimore City Directory, 1861" was consulted. When an entry was found in the Directory where the first name and occupation agreed with the Census listing and the surname appears to be similar, the City Directory spelling was added in brackets in the text and added to the index. The original enumeration at the National Archives was consulted for all proofreading. The enumerator took great liberties in the spelling of surnames. Sometimes when an entry for a household carried over from one page to another the enumerator changed the spelling of the surname. We have retained both spellings in this book. Surnames were occasionally spelled phonetically, e.g. the name written as Knobloch in the Baltimore City Directory appears as Noblock in the census. The user is cautioned to check the index for all possible variations. In some sections it is obvious that the information was transcribed from the original record column by column rather than across the page, line by line, with frequent misalignment of the data on a particular line.

  • John Donne and the Conway Papers a Biographical and Bibliographical Study of Poetry and Patronage in the Seventeenth Century
John Donne and the Conway Papers A Biographical and Bibliographical Study of Poetry and Patronage in the Seventeenth Century Daniel Starza Smith University College London Supervised by Prof. H. R. Woudhuysen and Dr. Alison Shell ii John Donne and the Conway Papers A Biographical and Bibliographical Study of Poetry and Patronage in the Seventeenth Century This thesis investigates a seventeenth-century manuscript archive, the Conway Papers, in order to explain the relationship between the archive’s owners and John Donne, the foremost manuscript poet of the century. An evaluation of Donne’s legacy as a writer and thinker requires an understanding of both his medium of publication and the collectors and agents who acquired and circulated his work. The Conway Papers were owned by Edward, first Viscount Conway, Secretary of State to James I and Charles I, and Conway’s son. Both men were also significant collectors of printed books. The archive as it survives, mainly in the British Library and National Archives, includes around 300 literary manuscripts ranging from court entertainments to bawdy ballads. This thesis fully evaluates the collection as a whole for the first time, including its complex history. I ask three principal questions: what the Conway Papers are and how they were amassed; how the archive came to contain poetry and drama by Donne, Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton and others; and what the significance of this fact is, both in terms of seventeenth-century theories about politics, patronage and society, and modern critical and historical interpretations. These questions cast new light on the early transmission of Donne’s verse, especially his Satires and verse epistles.
