    Dreams in Early Modern England: Frameworks of Interpretation by Janine Rivière A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of PhD Graduate Department of History, University of Toronto. © Copyright by Janine Rivière (2013) Abstract Dreams in Early Modern England: Frameworks of Interpretation, PhD (2013), Janine Rivière, Graduate Department of History, University of Toronto. While dreams as visions have received much attention from historians, less work has been undertaken on understanding more commonly experienced dreams that occurred in sleep. In this dissertation I seek to begin redressing this neglect. Two overarching questions focus the dissertation: How did early modern English people understand their dreams? And did these understandings change in response to significant developments in English culture? To answer these questions I explore early modern English theories, beliefs and experiences of dreams through a close study of key medical, demonological, philosophical, spiritual, oneirocritic and private writings. I suggest that in the period 1550-1750 there were three principal frameworks used to understand dreams: (1) health of the body and mind, (2) prediction and (3) spirituality. These three frameworks coexisted, either reinforcing or contesting one another throughout the period. The framework of health saw dreams as natural products of the body and mind that revealed the overall health of the dreamer. In the model of prediction, dreams were deemed significant, yet encoded, clues to the future that required careful interpretation. Finally, in spiritual frameworks, dreams were conceived as sent by God, angels or the Devil. Since early modern English writings reveal a diversity of natural and supernatural theories about dreams that never really “declined,” a study of them also helps to complicate ideas about the “disenchantment of the world." Finally, I also suggest that early modern English writings on dreams reveal the perceived vulnerability of the dreamer to internal and external forces.

Published 1989 by FAMILY LINE PUBLICATIONS INTRODUCTION Every effort has been made to achieve accuracy in this project, but interpreting the enumerator's hand-written material has posed problems. As an aid to deciphering many poorly written and misspelled names, the "Wood's Baltimore City Directory, 1861" was consulted. When an entry was found in the Directory where the first name and occupation agreed with the Census listing and the surname appears to be similar, the City Directory spelling was added in brackets in the text and added to the index. The original enumeration at the National Archives was consulted for all proofreading. The enumerator took great liberties in the spelling of surnames. Sometimes when an entry for a household carried over from one page to another the enumerator changed the spelling of the surname. We have retained both spellings in this book. Surnames were occasionally spelled phonetically, e.g. the name written as Knobloch in the Baltimore City Directory appears as Noblock in the census. The user is cautioned to check the index for all possible variations. In some sections it is obvious that the information was transcribed from the original record column by column rather than across the page, line by line, with frequent misalignment of the data on a particular line.

Woudhuysen and Dr. Alison Shell ii John Donne and the Conway Papers A Biographical and Bibliographical Study of Poetry and Patronage in the Seventeenth Century This thesis investigates a seventeenth-century manuscript archive, the Conway Papers, in order to explain the relationship between the archive’s owners and John Donne, the foremost manuscript poet of the century. An evaluation of Donne’s legacy as a writer and thinker requires an understanding of both his medium of publication and the collectors and agents who acquired and circulated his work. The Conway Papers were owned by Edward, first Viscount Conway, Secretary of State to James I and Charles I, and Conway’s son. Both men were also significant collectors of printed books. The archive as it survives, mainly in the British Library and National Archives, includes around 300 literary manuscripts ranging from court entertainments to bawdy ballads. This thesis fully evaluates the collection as a whole for the first time, including its complex history. I ask three principal questions: what the Conway Papers are and how they were amassed; how the archive came to contain poetry and drama by Donne, Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton and others; and what the significance of this fact is, both in terms of seventeenth-century theories about politics, patronage and society, and modern critical and historical interpretations. These questions cast new light on the early transmission of Donne’s verse, especially his Satires and verse epistles.

    Puritan Iconoclasm during the English Civil War Julie Spraggon THE BOYDELL PRESS STUDIES IN MODERN BRITISH RELIGIOUS HISTORY Volume 6 Puritan Iconoclasm during the English Civil War This work offers a detailed analysis of Puritan iconoclasm in England during the 1640s, looking at the reasons for the resurgence of image- breaking a hundred years after the break with Rome, and the extent of the phenomenon. Initially a reaction to the emphasis on ceremony and the ‘beauty of holiness’ under Archbishop Laud, the attack on ‘innovations’, such as communion rails, images and stained glass windows, developed into a major campaign driven forward by the Long Parliament as part of its religious reformation. Increasingly radical legislation targeted not just ‘new popery’, but pre-Reformation survivals and a wide range of objects (including some which had been acceptable to the Elizabethan and Jacobean Church). The book makes a detailed survey of parliament’s legislation against images, considering the question of how and how far this legislation was enforced generally, with specific case studies looking at the impact of the iconoclastic reformation in London, in the cathedrals and at the universities. Parallel to this official movement was an unofficial one undertaken by Parliamentary soldiers, whose violent destructiveness became notori- ous. The significance of this spontaneous action and the importance of the anti-Catholic and anti-episcopal feelings that it represented are also examined.
