  • He Oldest Award Giving Body in the Philippines Was the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Simply Called FAMAS
Figure 1: Best Actress from FAMAS, Gawad Urian, Film Academy of the Philippines, and CMMA he oldest award giving body in the Philippines was the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences simply called FAMAS. It was launch two years after the Maria Clara awards folded in 1951. FAMAS shared the same name with the American film academy; AMPAS until the later complained and the Filipino organization have to change theirs into the current acronym. FAMAS created a history of controversies throughout their more than sixty years in award-giving business mostly due to their questionable selection of winners. In 2006, FAMAS experienced another setback when two groups divided the organization due to a controversial election of its officers. As the legal battle settled, the battling groups decided to just hand out their own awards, one used the name FAMAS and the other the Maria Clara Awards. Like its infancy, the Maria Clara Awards did not reach its maturity and died the second time. This is not the first time FAMAS experience disgruntled “break-away” members forming their own award. Prior to 1976, FAMAS retained their status as the most prestigious recognition a Filipino actor could have. Charito Solis, who won best actress at the Asian Film Festival in 1967 used to proudly bring her FAMAS trophies on the film set to intimidate starlets and to instigate professionalism. The breakaway group of critics wish to distinguish themselves from FAMAS by successfully branded their award as not for actors who overtly act in films, they catered to the ones who are restrained and controlled.

At 81 years old OMLBy Rafael M. Alunan III conquers Mt. Kinabalu IT was another dream come true for Oscar M. Lopez (OML). Making things happen is in his genes. The seed took root years ago from a picture he saw of Mt. Kinabalu in Sabah, Borneo. It took shape as he was conquering the tallest peaks of Luzon (Mt. Pulag), Visayas (Mt. Kanlaon) and Mindanao (Mt. Apo). OML inspired those who heard of him on the slopes and went out of their way to shake his hand. “So, you heard of an 81-year-old loose on the mountain?” he would quip. He led 23 other men and women of the Lopez family, Lopez Group and First Philippine Mt. Everest Team through five grueling days on the trail, around seven hours daily on the go, to climb and descend from Sabah’s rooftop. Even as the air thinned and the climb got more arduous, his limitless supply of adrenaline and chutzpah paved the way. Getting to Kinabalu took years through a long and winding road. Cresting the country’s tallest peaks required numerous training climbs and country treks to test endurance, strength, stamina and will power. • Sine Cinema Das Filipinas

KRITIKA KULTURA PRIMATES IN PARADISE: CRITICAL POSSIBILITIES OF THE MILIEU MOVIE Joel David Inha University, South Korea [email protected] Abstract The use of multiple lead characters in cinema is a fairly recent development, although the strategy (and its resultant variety of structures) had been present for some time in theater and literature. The typical Classical Hollywood action-driven narrative operated most efficiently through a singular hero, allowing the audience to undergo the film experience via the process of singular identification. With the breakdown in identificatory requisites popularized by various New Wave and Third Cinema movements, and the consequent assimilation of this trend starting with the New American Cinema, mainstream Hollywood was ready to embark upon a series of multi-character movies, with Robert Altman’s Nashville (1975) serving as watershed text. Interestingly, the production of films with multiple lead characters had been a long-standing staple in the national cinema of the Philippines—a country that itself holds multiple distinctions vis-à-vis the US, starting with its historical status as America’s first (and only Asian) colony. This article will be looking at how a mode of practice that recently emerged on the global scene had been functioning in a relatively obscure national cinema, and how the practice ensured for itself a measure of longevity by distinguishing itself as a popular genre. Keywords milieu realism, multi-character films, Philippine cinema About the author Joel David completed his PhD in Cinema Studies at New York University, and is Associate Professor for Cultural Studies at Inha University in Korea.
