• ECCLESIAE OCCIDENTALIS MONUMENTA IURIS ANTIQUISSIMA Ed
ECCLESIAE OCCIDENTALIS MONUMENTA IURIS ANTIQUISSIMA ed. C.H. Turner (Oxford, 1899-1939) Index of Names and Selected Words Corrected, revised, and extended 2008 by Philip R. Amidon, S.J. Creighton University [email protected] It has seemed opportune to republish this index in a corrected and extended version; there has been added to the list of names a list of selected words, and the method of referring to the text has been somewhat altered. The exact scope of C.H. Turner’s masterpiece is not immediately apparent from its title or subtitles (Canonum et conciliorum graecorum interpretationes latinae; Canones et concilia graeca ab antiquis interpretibus latine reddita). What one in fact finds here is an edition of the earliest surviving collections of church canons in Latin which are undoubtedly from the fourth century or have been assigned to it by at least some consensus of scholarship; some of them are translations from Greek, while others were originally drafted in Latin itself. Most of them, with the exception of the Apostolic Constitutions and Canons, are attributed to church councils. Turner, however, also offers a selection of doctrinal and historical material of enormous value, some of it indeed connected to the councils whose canons he edits; a comparison, for instance, of the creed contained in the synodical letter of the Council of Sardica with the Tomus Damasi, will suggest how far the doctrinal education of the western church advanced during the course of the fourth century. The connection of other historical matter to the canons is less obvious, however; one wonders what the Athanasian Historia acephala is doing here (granted that it is part of the collection of Theodosius the Deacon), however grateful one is to have the edition.

  • Lyrbe/Seleukeia'dan Bereket Boynuzlu İon Başlıkları Ionic Capitals with the Horn of Plenty from Lyrbe/Seleukeia
Anahtar sözcükler: Lyrbe/Seleukeia Agora’sı, İon başlıkları, bereket boynuzu, cornucopia, mimari bezeme Abstract: These capitals which are known to belong to the western stoa section of the Lyrbe/Seleukeia Agora and which form the subject of this research have an extraordinary look due to their form and the horns of plenty carved on their sides although there are examples of capitals with their lateral faces embellished with various figures in antiquity, the great dimensions of the Lyrbe/Seleukeia capitals, without a typological duplicate, seems to have been designed to cover large areas with fewer columns. It is possible that the horns of plenty, which were used on facades as the explict symbol of plentifulness and wealth, were also used on these capitals with a similar intent.

Abstract: The first chapter discusses in detail the main type of Imperial coin age minted by the Pisidian city of Selge. This type is shown to depict the city’s prin cipal sanctu ary of Zeus and Heracles and not a styrax press as Su zanne Amigues recently tried to prove. Though apparently rooted in ancient Anato li an traditions, the sanctuary also served as a ve nue for the rites of the Roman emperorworship and for the festivals of the Epinikia. The second chapter deals with the representation of a myth on an Imperial coin from the small Lycian mountain town of Arneai. The coin depicts a sexual assault by the leche rous god Pan on a fount nymph who wards off the indecent act (gr. arneomai) and was there upon given the name Arne («she who says no»). It is in her eponymic function that the nymph is shown on the coin of this small Lycian town. The local mythical tradition and the concomitant Greek interpre tation of its name conceal the Lycian or Luvian origin of the toponym which in this language more or less means ‹place of fount› and ap tly describes Arneai’s abundance of water. A parallel to the Greek interpretation of the nymph’s name Arne is known from the Arkadian city of Mantineia, where the name of the epo nymous fount nymph was also interpreted as meaning ‹she who says no›.

I. THE frontier of Pisidia, where it adjoins Lycaonia, is placed wrongly in my Histor. Geogr. Chs. Q and V. The district was little known, when I wrote: I had traversed it hurriedly in 1882, 1886, and 1890, in each case only on a single hasty route. The excursion of 1882 resulted in placing Anaboura and Neapolis.2 No name was discovered in the excursions of 1886 and 1890. Prof. Sterrett explored the district very carefully in 1884 and 1885 ; but the numerous inscriptions, which he found, unluckily did not contain important topographical in- dications, and he assigned a position much too far north for the city of Pappa-Tiberiopolis.3 I shared his view on this critical point, with the result that many other towns were drawn away far north of their true situation, because they stood in some relation to Pappa, and when it seemed to lie away in the north, they had to be placed correspondingly.

370 THE CITIES AND BISHOPRICS OF PHRYGIA. THE CITIES AND BISHOPRICS OF PHRYGIA. THIS paper is really the first part of a report on the results attained in 1883 by the Asia Minor Exploration Fund. Besides some minor excursions, I then made two long journeys in the interior of Asia Minor, June to October. I was accompanied almost the whole of the time by Mr. J. R. S. Sterrett, a Virginian student at the American School of Athens. Our usual practice was to ride by separate roads,1 and in this way the expedition sur- veyed a much wider country than if I had been alone : the results were so good that I am anxious to arrange the expedition of 1884 in a similar way. Our chief aim was to construct the map of ancient Phrygia, and our method was to examine each district thoroughly enough to be able to say, not only where there were, but also where there were not, ancient sites. The discovery of monuments and inscriptions was a secondary object, and we did not aim at completeness in this regard ; but even here our results are important. We copied more than four hundred and fifty inscriptions, which is at the rate of one hundred per month, and I incorporate in this paper those which have most direct bearing on the antiquities of each district. Most of them have passed under the eyes of both of us: where only one of us actually copied the inscription from the stone, I give his initials at the head of the text: where no initials are attached, it is to be understood that we have both verified the text on the stone.3 I shall speak at another time of the monuments which we found.
