Yangon has a population of 5.2 million with a density of 5346 per km2 (2014), making it one of the country’s most densely populated cities. Due to this population pressure, there is an urgent need for Yangon city to establish a proper Urban Transport Plan. To assess Yangon’s existing transportation system, this report has used the “Sustainable Urban Transport Index (SUTI)” index developed by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). SUTI’s 10 indicators provide a quantitative evaluation of Yangon’s urban transport system. These results will guide authorities on the necessary sectors and help shape the direction of urban transport in Yangon. All 10 indicators are weighted equally, and each indicator’s performance is compared on a scale of 1-100. To analyse the data, a series of high-level meetings took place between the Road and Bridge Authority, City Planning and Land Administration Authority of Yangon City Development Committee, as well as academics and experts in the transportation sector. The results of the index are presented through a geometric mean and a spider diagram. The geometric mean of the index is 49.04, indicating that Yangon’s overall transport system is in a moderate situation. Lastly, the spider diagram provides Yangon’s city transport authority with a valuable indication as to which areas need to be focused on for the future of urban transport in the city. vii CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, has a population of 5.2 million (as of the 2014 census). It is the country’s largest commercial hub. Accelerated economic growth and motorisation have caused Yangon’s transport system to undergo rapid development. The increase in traffic volume, mainly attributed to private cars and buses, has also resulted in higher levels of air pollution and an increase in the number of severe traffic accidents.

Enjoy Myanmar Cuisine. Firstly, Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon) is the largest city in Myanmar (formerly Burma). A mix of British colonial architecture, modern high-rises and gilded Buddhist pagodas define its skyline. Its famed Shwedagon Paya, a huge, shimmering pagoda complex, draws thousands of pilgrims annually. The city's other notable religious sites include the Botataung and Sule pagodas, both housing Buddhist relics. Secondly, Bago is one of the richest archaeological sites in Myanmar. Apparently Mons were the first to settle at this site. Two Mon brothers Thamala and Wimala from Thaton. first founded the city about 825 A.D. In 13th century A.D. The site. which was then on the Gulf of Martaban. had already been earmarked as the location of a great city by Gautama. the historic Buddha. Bago was made the capital of the Mon Kingdom and it came to be known as Hansavati (Hanthawaddy). It was also the seaport of ancient Mon kings. Then it became the Second Myanmar Empire founded by King Bayinnaung. Thirtly, explore Kyaikhtiyo - a small town in Mon State, Myanmar, famous for its Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda or Golden Rock – a favorite destination for travelers. Travelers from near and far come to visit this place, as they considered Kyaikhtiyo as a sacred place like other pagodas in Myanmar. Finally, Only 30 minutes' driver from Yangon across the Bago River, Thanlyin was a marjor port from the 14 th to the century, untill it was displaced by Yango in 1755, and was briefly controlled by the Portuguese adventures de Brito at the beginning of the 17 th century.
