    Chapter 6 Business Conglomerates in the Context of Myanmar’s Economic Reform Aung Min and Toshihiro Kudo Abstract The purpose of this paper is to identify the role of conglomerates in the context of Myanmar’s economic reform process. The paper addresses the research question of the role of business conglomerates and the Myanmar economy, such as are they growth engines or just political cronies? We select some of the top conglomerates in Myanmar and assess their profile, performance, and strategies and examine the sources of growth and limitations for future growth and prospects. The top groups chosen for this paper are Htoo, Kanbawza, Max, Asia World, IGE, Shwe Taung, Serge Pun Associates (SPA)/First Myanmar Investment Group of Companies (FMI), Loi Hein, IBTC, Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC), and Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd. (UMEHL). There are other local conglomerates that this paper does not address and they include Shwe Than Lwin Group, Eden Group, Capital and Dagon International etc., which are suggested for further research about Myanmar’s conglomerates in the future. Sources of growth and key success factors of the top business groups are their connection with government, contact with foreign partners, and their competency in the past and present. In the context of the economic reform, previously favored business people appear to recognize that the risks of challenging economic reform could outweigh the likely benefits. In addition, some of the founders and top management of the conglomerates are still subject to US sanctions. Market openness, media monitoring, competition by local and foreign players, sanctions, and the changing trends of policy and the economy limit the growth of conglomerates.

    Dagon University Commemoration of 25th Anniversary Silver Jubilee Research Journal 2019, Vol.9, No.2 404 A Study on the Processing of Toddy Palm Wine Khin Si Win1 Abstract In this research work, toddy palm sap of Dar Pein Town, Hlegu Township, Yangon Region was used to produce the value-added product of toddy palm wine. Effective preparation technique was employed to obtain the high quality processed toddy palm wine. Toddy palm sap of soluble solids content 12 to 12.5 % Brix was mixed with 10 % sugar to get the soluble solids content of toddy palm sap was obtained 23.5 – 24 % Brix. High purified raw materials such as 0.2 % yeast, 0.1 % pectic enzyme and 0.01 % potassium sorbate were employed to produce the most attractive processed toddy palm wine. The physico-chemical characteristics of the processed toddy palm wine were analyzed by the determination of pH, acidity, total soluble solids (TSS), specific gravity, alcohol content and colour. It was found that the characteristics of these processed toddy palm wine were also comparable with the commercial wine (full moon wine) from other fruit juice. The wine is consumed in a variety of flavors varying from sweet unfermented to sour, fermented and vinegary. Toddy is an alcoholic drink and sweet with a characteristic flavour and contains between 4 and 6 % alcohol.     MoHS Statement on COVID-19 (12 March 2020, 8:00PM) (Link) (Unofficial translation by OCHA) 1. The Ministry of Health and Sports (MoHS) has been working on monitoring and preventive measures of the COVID-19, which has been spreading globally, at international entrances/gates, at public hospitals and among communities, as well as in cooperation with private hospitals. 2. In doing so, new Persons Under Investigation (PUI) have been found between 11 March 2020 (6:00PM) and 12 March 2020 (6:00PM), and treated and isolated at designated hospitals concerned. Nasal swab samples taken from them will be sent and tested at the National Health Laboratory (NHL) in Yangon. (See Table 1). 3. According to the laboratory results released by the NHL, four of the patients being treated in designated hospitals (from 11 March 2020, 6:00PM, to 12 March 2020, 6:00PM) tested negative for COVID-19. (See Table 2). 4. Nine PUIs under hospital quarantine (eight Myanmar citizens in South Okkalapa Mother and Children Hospital and one Myanmar citizen in Shwe Pann Taw Station Hospital in Aung Lan Township of Magway Region) also tested negative for COVID-19. 5. As of 12 March 2020, 6:00PM, 16 patients were being treated at designated hospitals. 6. The MoHS has been speeding up monitoring although there were no laboratory-confirmed cases as of 12 March 2020. The MoHS calls on people to exactly follow the MoHS health guidelines as the COVID-19 has been spreading in China and other 114 countries in the world, including neighboring countries, and as the WHO has declared the COVID-19 as a pandemic.
