WORLD WAR ONE: THE DEATHS OF THOSE ASSOCIATED WITH BATTLE AND DISTRICT This article cannot be more than a simple series of statements, and sometimes speculations, about each member of the forces listed. The Society would very much appreciate having more information, including photographs, particularly from their families. To go into detail on the various campaigns that led to the deaths would extend an article into a history of the war, and this is avoided here. Here we attempt to identify and to locate the 407 people who died, who are known to have been associated in some way with Battle and its nearby parishes: Ashburnham, Bodiam, Brede, Brightling, Catsfield, Dallington, Ewhurst, Mountfield, Netherfield, Ninfield, Penhurst, Robertsbridge and Salehurst, Sedlescombe, Westfield and Whatlington. Those who died are listed by date of death within each theatre of war. Due note should be taken of the dates of death particularly in the last ten days of March 1918, where several are notional. Home dates may be based on registration data, which means that the year in 1 question may be earlier than that given.

Ellenwhorne Equestrian Centre Stocklands Farm | East Sussex | TN32 5RT Seller Insight When we first saw Ellenwhorne we knew it was the perfect space to have a beautiful house and run an equestrian centre,” says Diane. “We have been at the property for 10 years now and since then we have completely re-done the house. It now comprises of five bedrooms and three reception rooms, lawned gardens and grounds, an orchard and a garage,” “We have done everything from adding slate flooring, a new kitchen, new bathroom as well as an outdoor arena and the equestrian centre with indoor school and stables. It is now the perfect house and equestrian centre, with so much character.” “Another aspect that first attracted us to the property was the outstanding natural beauty of the location on the East Sussex/Kent border. There are such glorious and breathtaking views all around. The house is set in a lovely spot and it is so calm and peaceful here,Everyone that visits always comments on this aspect”. Although Ellenwhorne Equestrian Centre is situated in a rural location it is also very accessible. It is situated between the pretty village of Staplecross which has many pubs and schools and the village of Broad Oak which has a good local shop and Post Office. Just a short distance away is the nearby village of Robertsbridge with a thriving local community, many shops, a doctor’s surgery, dentist and a vet,”. Transport links are also easily accessible. “The A21 is within easy reach giving access to the historic towns of Battle, Hastings and the south coast and northerly to the M25 and the main motorway network.

  • Written Evidence Submitted by the Northern Parish Councils of Rother District Council and Burwash: Save Our Fields (The Joint Group) [FPS 143]
Written evidence submitted by the northern parish councils of Rother District Council and Burwash: Save our Fields (the Joint group) [FPS 143] Introduction 1) The members of the Joint group are: a) Councillors from Brightling Parish Council, Burwash Parish Council, Etchingham Parish Council, Salehurst and Robertsbridge Parish Council, and Ticehurst Parish Council b) Our County councillor c) Two of the local Rother District councillors d) Members of Burwash: Save our Fields 2) Burwash: Save our Fields was set up in 2014. Details of the group can be found at www.burwashsaveourfields.org.uk/. Since 2014, the group has been involved in about 12 planning applications, issues and planning appeals and it has seen its arguments accepted in all of them. 3) The Joint group was set up this year to co-ordinate a response to government planning proposals. 4) Areas the Joint group can assist you with: a) Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) 83% of Rother District Council is in an AONB. Over 90% of Rother District Council is in a protected area, the AONB, Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), RAMSAR sites etc., see para 28. b) Rural issues The parishes are rural parishes. Planning is primarily urban-centric. Rural issues in planning are some of the most intractable. c) Local perspective Parishes and local groups are able to assess how planning works for the public. They have an independent focus about their impact on villages which statistics rarely provide. Unlike some witnesses, our overriding consideration is the public interest. All but one of the parishes have recently been involved in drafting a Neighbourhood plan.

  • East Sussex County Council – Transport & Environment
EAST SUSSEX COUNTY COUNCIL – TRANSPORT & ENVIRONMENT Progress to date on Implementation of Lower Speed Limits in Rother District The Review of Rural Speed Limits in East Sussex (covering A and B-class roads and villages with existing limits in excess of 30mph) was originally phased over a four year programme from 2008/09 to 2011/12. This programme was based on the County’s 18 rural electoral divisions ranked in the order of their numbers of Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI) road casualties, so that those divisions with the worst crash records have been treated first. Progress to date in Rother District is as follows: 2008/09 No electoral divisions in Rother 2009/10 Battle & Crowhurst A2100 Starrs Green and Telham – extended 40mph speed limit Netherfield – 30mph limit on B2096, 40mph on Netherfield Road B2204 Catsfield Stream – 40mph speed limit Whatlington – 40mph limit Northern Rother Cripp’s Corner – B2089 & B2165, 30mph limit in village Swaile’s Green – B2089, 40mph limit Staplecross – B2165, 30mph limit in village 2010/11 Northern Rother A28 Newenden Bridge to Northiam – 40mph speed limit B2244 Sedlescombe – 50mph limit north of village These two schemes were the only ones to have been completed in Rother in 2010/11 before the Government’s announcement of ‘in-year’ grant cuts resulted in the remaining speed limit programme across the whole county being put on hold. The County Council is committed to the completion of this speed limit review project, but the remaining schemes will need to be rescheduled to match the available resources. The situation is very uncertain at present but it is hoped it will become a little clearer after the Government has announced its autumn spending review and we have a better idea of the levels of funding likely to be available in future years.
