2 Game Day (continued)

PASSING AN EARLY TEST: There was some concern about the state of the offensive line going into the EMU game. Joshua Matthews, the senior all conference center was the only player on the front with playing experience. At least for one game, the young quartet of red-shirt sophomore tackle John Smith, red-shirt freshman guard Deonta Allen-Wright, red-shirt junior guard Malcolm Rutledge and freshman tackle Toree Boyd passed the test. The Bison offense rolled up over 380 yards of offense and averaged almost six yards per play. VERSATILITY PERSONNIFIED: Brandon Flanagan could be the most versatile player on the Howard team. The senior serves as a wide receiver where he led the team in receiving last season. He also led the team in punt returns, averaging almost 10 yards per return. And if that is not enough, he has shown his value to the team by serving as the holder on extra points and field goals. MOST IMPROVED: John Fleck had a good season as a freshman kicker and punter last season. The sophomore from Indianapolis, IN, attended a kicker’s camp over the summer and it appears to have made a difference. In the game against EMU, Fleck averaged almost 47 yards per punt, knocked two inside the EMU 20, was good on a 43-yard field goal and he had two touchbacks on his kicks. TRANSFERS WITH IMPACT POTENTIAL: The Bison figure to be much improved with the addition of transfers Godspower Offor, Khari Brown and Richard Aiyegoro. Offor is a 6-3, 240-pound junior transfer from WakeForest, who brings depth and athletic talent to the front line on defense. Offor recorded a sack in the loss to EMU. Brown is a 6-2, 240-pound sophomore transfer from University of Buffalo, where he received significant playing time asa linebacker. And Aiyegoro is a 5-6, 155-pound junior transfer from Elizabeth City State, who brings the home run threat to the offense as a wide receiver and to the special teams as a return specialist. THE PLEASANT SURPRISE: Through the first 6 games of the 2012 season, Damon Gresham Chisholm was a situa- tion player on defense as a freshman last season. But things changed dramatically when starting defensive tackle Ibrahima Kebe went down with an injury and forced some changes on the defensive line. Greshman-Chisholm was inserted into the starting lineup at and the rest is history, as they say. The 6-3, 250-pound sophomore went on earn MEAC Rookie of the Year and first team all- conference honors, recording 18.5 tackles for losses. FRESHMAN WITH IMPACT POTENTIAL: Toree Boyd is not the only Bison freshman who will factor into the team’s fortunes this season. Marquise Blanchard and Anthony Philyaw have also shown that they are ready to play at this level. Blanchard, a 6-3, 245-pound freshman from Miami, FL, is in the rotation on defense and has turned heads in the preseason. Philyaw is 6-1, 210-pound freshman running back from Redondo Beach, Calif., who has looked impressive and has worked his way into the running back rotation. STREAK SNAPPED: After starting 33 straight games, dating back to his freshman season, Julien David was forced to sit out last week’s game with a shoulder injury. His status is game to game. UNDER THE RADAR: Despite having an outstanding season in 2012, linebacker Tabrian Resby received little fanfare. The 6-0 senior from Athens, GA, finished second on the team in tackles with 82 and ranked among the tops in the MEAC. Resby appears to take up where he left off. He finished with 12 tackles, including one for a loss against EMU. COACHING CHANGE: The Bison have a new offensive line coach in Manny Martinez, who comes over from Texas Southern. Donald Griggs will work with the tight ends. NEXT UP: Howard travels to Norfolk, VA to take on Old Dominion University next Saturday at 6 pm while Morehouse travels to Lane College for a 2 pm game. Rayford Petty Head Coach (Interim) Elon, 1979 First Season Rayford “Ray” Petty enters his second campaign as head football coach of the Howard University Bison. The highly respected Petty served as head coach of the Bison from 2002-06. He also served as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator here under head coach .

Prior to Howard, Petty served as defensive coordinator at both Delaware State and Norfolk State. He spent four seasons with the Hornets, and amongst his team’s defensive highlights, DSU earned a No. 3 MEAC ranking in turnover margin (+0.5 pg) with a total of 22 forced turnovers and four scored. In 2008, the DSU defense was ranked second in the MEAC in pass efficiency defense (79.5) and opponents’ first downs (15.3 pg), and third in total defense (288.4 ypg) and pass defense (1441. ypg). The Hornets were named MEAC champions in 2007 and Petty’s unit garnered national rankings in pass efficiency defense (No. 9/105.33), scoring defense (No. 13/18.4 ppg) and overall pass defense (No. 14/169.7). That year, Delaware State finished No. 1 in the MEAC in scoring defense.

Prior to coaching at DSU, Petty posted a 25- 30 record as the head coach of Howard (2002-06). Under Petty’s defen- sive genius, Howard set a NCAA FCS mark in 2003 for most returned for touchdowns with eight. In 2011, the defense ranked among the nation’s best in tackles for losses, sacks and pass defense.

His resume is impressive as he has helped developed former or current draftees/signees Antoine Bethea (currently with the Indianapolis Colts), Marques Douglas (retired), Ronald Bartell, Jr (currently with the Detroit Lions), Tracy White (retired) and Geoff Pope (retired).

During his first stint with the Bison, he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator from 1992-99. Petty was the defensive coordinator for the Bison during both the 1993 and 1996 seasons when the team captured Black College National championships. Howard went 11-0 during their 1993 season, earning them an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs as well as the MEAC championship. In 1996, the Bison defeated in the Heritage Bowl.

He received his undergraduate degree from Elon College. He and his wife Hazel have one daughter, Chantell and one son Shawn.

11 Morehouse Head Coach

Rich Freeman Head Coach

Rich Freeman, a 15 year veteran of the football coaching fraternity just completed his fourth season at Morehouse College. Hired in March of 2007, Freeman directed his first Morehouse team to a surprising 7-3 record and into the upper echelon of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), where the Maroon Tigers have taken permanent residence, with the mantra, “Play Fast, Hard, and Smart.”

Over the past four seasons, Freeman’s teams have compiled an enviable 28-13 record. His 2010 (8-3) squad was the first Morehouse football team ever selected to compete in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The personable coach confesses to having been bitten early-on by the coaching bug. He has had wide and varied experience having coached at both the Division I and II levels as well as in the NCAA and the NAIA. Well-traveled in his coaching career, the Atlanta native has had coaching stints at Tennessee State University, Alabama State University, Miles College, Concordia College-Selma and Lane College.

A defensive specialist, Freeman has coordinated defenses and coached linebackers, defensive linemen, defensive backs and special teams. As a position coach, his well-prepared, highly motivated and effective units have received high regional and national rankings.

Freeman played his high school football for the late William Lester at Atlanta Public Schools powerhouse Crim High School where he received all-state honorable mention as a linebacker. A 1997 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. in physical education, Freeman was a three-year starting linebacker at the Nashville institution. Serving as team captain during his senior season, he earned Ohio Valley Conference honorable mention honors.

Coach Freeman is married to the former Kimm Marie Grafenreed; they are the parents of son, six-year-old Rich IV, and daughter, four year-old Reagan Mariah.
