HOWARD UNIVERSITY Game Notes B ISO N HOWARD UNIVERSITY Game Notes B ISO N HOWARD UNIVERSITY (BisoN) vs MOREHOUSE COLLEGE (MarOON TIGers) RFK STADIUM Washington, DC 3:30 PM Game Day THE GAME: This is the Third Annual AT&T Nation’s Football Classic, featuring the Bison of Howard University from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The Bison enter the game with a 0-1 record, having dropped their season opener, 34-24 to Eastern Michigan Uni- versity on the road. This is the season opener for the Maroon Tigers. THE COACHES: Howard is coached by Ray Petty (Elon College, ’79), who is in his first year of his second tenure as head coach and has a 25-30 career record. Rich Freeman (Tennessee State, ‘97), who is in his seventh season with Morehouse, has a 39-22 career record. SERIES RECORD: Howard has won the last five, including last year’s 30-29 thriller. The last two games have come down to the wire and been settled by a total of four points. The Bison lead the series, 23-10-2, dating back to 1923. 2013 HU Statistical Leaders Rushing: Greg McGhee, 14 carries, 93 yards, 1 TD Passing: McGhee, 19 of 32,182 yards, 1 TD, 2 interceptions Receiving: Jonathan Booker, 6 receptions, 76 yards, 1 TD Tackles: Cameron Alston, 14 tackles 2012 Morehouse Statistical Leaders Rushing: Shelton Hamilton, 74 carries, 377 yards, 4 TDs Passing: Joshua Harris, 5 of 8, 65 yards, 2 TDs Receiving: Devon Mann, 22 receptions, 495 yards, 5 TDs Tackles: Lance White, 63 tackles MEAC RESULTS FROM WEEK ONE Coastal Carolina 27, SC State 20 Bethune Cookman 12, Tennessee State 9 FAMU 27, Mississippi Valley State 10 Georgia Southern 77, Savannah State 9 Maine 23, Norfolk State 9 Duke 45, NC Central 0 Army 28, MSU 12 Eastern Michigan 34, Howard 24 THIS WEEK’S SCHEDULE (9/7/13) Morgan State at Robert Morris, 12 noon Norfolk State at Rutgers, 12 noon SC State at Clemson, 12:30 pm St. Augustine at NC Central, 2 pm Tennessee State at FAMU, 2 pm Delaware State at Delaware, 3:30 pm Howard vs Morehouse, 3:30 pm Virginia Union at Bethune Cookman, 4 pm NC A&T at Appalachian State, 6 pm Savannah State at Troy State, 6 pm Hampton at William & Mary, 7 pm 2 Game Day (continued) PASSING AN EARLY TEST: There was some concern about the state of the offensive line going into the EMU game. Joshua Matthews, the senior all conference center was the only player on the front with playing experience. At least for one game, the young quartet of red-shirt sophomore tackle John Smith, red-shirt freshman guard Deonta Allen-Wright, red-shirt junior guard Malcolm Rutledge and freshman tackle Toree Boyd passed the test. The Bison offense rolled up over 380 yards of offense and averaged almost six yards per play. VERSATILITY PERSONNIFIED: Brandon Flanagan could be the most versatile player on the Howard team. The senior serves as a wide receiver where he led the team in receiving last season. He also led the team in punt returns, averaging almost 10 yards per return. And if that is not enough, he has shown his value to the team by serving as the holder on extra points and field goals. MOST IMPROVED: John Fleck had a good season as a freshman kicker and punter last season. The sophomore from Indianapolis, IN, attended a kicker’s camp over the summer and it appears to have made a difference. In the game against EMU, Fleck averaged almost 47 yards per punt, knocked two inside the EMU 20, was good on a 43-yard field goal and he had two touchbacks on his kicks. TRANSFERS WITH IMPACT POTENTIAL: The Bison figure to be much improved with the addition of transfers Godspower Offor, Khari Brown and Richard Aiyegoro. Offor is a 6-3, 240-pound junior transfer from Wake Forest, who brings depth and athletic talent to the front line on defense. Offor recorded a sack in the loss to EMU. Brown is a 6-2, 240-pound sophomore transfer from University of Buffalo, where he received significant playing time as a linebacker. And Aiyegoro is a 5-6, 155-pound junior transfer from Elizabeth City State, who brings the home run threat to the offense as a wide receiver and to the special teams as a return specialist. THE PLEASANT SURPRISE: Through the first 6 games of the 2012 season, Damon Gresham Chisholm was a situa- tion player on defense as a freshman last season. But things changed dramatically when starting defensive tackle Ibrahima Kebe went down with an injury and forced some changes on the defensive line. Greshman-Chisholm was inserted into the starting lineup at defensive end and the rest is history, as they say. The 6-3, 250-pound sophomore went on earn MEAC Rookie of the Year and first team all- conference honors, recording 18.5 tackles for losses. FRESHMAN WITH IMPACT POTENTIAL: Toree Boyd is not the only Bison freshman who will factor into the team’s fortunes this season. Marquise Blanchard and Anthony Philyaw have also shown that they are ready to play at this level. Blanchard, a 6-3, 245-pound freshman from Miami, FL, is in the rotation on defense and has turned heads in the preseason. Philyaw is 6-1, 210-pound freshman running back from Redondo Beach, Calif., who has looked impressive and has worked his way into the running back rotation. STREAK SNAPPED: After starting 33 straight games, dating back to his freshman season, Julien David was forced to sit out last week’s game with a shoulder injury. His status is game to game. UNDER THE RADAR: Despite having an outstanding season in 2012, linebacker Tabrian Resby received little fanfare. The 6-0 senior from Athens, GA, finished second on the team in tackles with 82 and ranked among the tops in the MEAC. Resby appears to take up where he left off. He finished with 12 tackles, including one for a loss against EMU. COACHING CHANGE: The Bison have a new offensive line coach in Manny Martinez, who comes over from Texas Southern. Donald Griggs will work with the tight ends. NEXT UP: Howard travels to Norfolk, VA to take on Old Dominion University next Saturday at 6 pm while Morehouse travels to Lane College for a 2 pm game.
