2 Game Day

PASSING AN EARLY TEST: There was some concern about the state of the offensive line coming into the season. Joshua Matthews, the senior all conference center was the only player on the front with playing experience. Under the tutelage of new offensive line coach Manny Martinez and the leadership of Matthews, the young quartet of red-shirt sophomore tackle John Smith, red-shirt freshman guard Deonta Allen-Wright, red-shirt junior guard Malcolm Rutledge and “true”freshman tackle Toree Boyd have held up well as the offense is averaging almost 360 yards per game of total offense, which ranks third the MEAC.

VERSATILITY PERSONIFIED: Brandon Flanagan could be the most versatile player on the Howard team. The diminutive senior who serves as a wide receiver where he is second on the team in receiving this season with 20 receptions for 148 yards. He also leads the team in punt returns, averaging almost 8 yards per return. And if that is not enough, he has shown his value to the team by serving as the holder on extra points and field goals.

MOST IMPROVED: John Fleck had a good season as a freshman kicker and punter last season. The sophomore from Indianapolis, IN, attended a kicker’s camp over the summer and it appears to have made a difference. He is having an fine season thus far, averag- ing almost 42 yards per punt, knocking six inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. He leads the team in scoring with 38 points and has nine field goals.

TRANSFERS WITH IMPACT POTENTIAL: The Bison figure to be much improved with the addition of transfers Godspower Offor and Richard Aiyegoro. Offor is a 6-3, 240-pound junior transfer from Wake Forest, who brings depth and athletic talent to the front line on defense. Offor has made some impact plays with two sacks and, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery as a reserve to his credit.

Aiyegoro is a 5-6, 155-pound junior transfer from Elizabeth City State, who brings the home run threat to the offense as a wide receiver and to the special teams as a return specialist. He ranks among the nation’s leaders in kick returns, averaging 26 yards per return and is fourth on the team in receiving with 15 receptions.

MAKING THE MOST Of AN OPPORTUNITY: Junior Ademola Olatunji is starting at cornerback for the first time in his career and has been a pleasant surprise. He ranks fourth on the team in tackles with 38 and he leads the team in interceptions with 3. He also ranks among the best in the MEAC and in the FCS in passes defended with 8.

THE PLEASANT SURPRISE: Through the first 6 games of the 2012 season, Damon Gresham Chisholm was a situation player on defense as a freshman last season. But things changed dramatically when starting defensive tackle Ibrahima Kebe went down with an injury and forced some changes on the defensive line. Greshman-Chisholm was inserted into the starting lineup at defensive end and the rest is history, as they say. The 6-3, 250-pound sophomore went on earn MEAC Rookie of the Year and first team all- conference honors, recording 18.5 tackles for losses. Despite seeing double teams, he leads the team in tackles for losses with 9.0 and is 2nd in sacks with 3.5.

FRESHMAN WITH IMPACT POTENTIAL: Toree Boyd is not the only Bison freshman who has factored into the team’s fortunes this season. Marquise Blanchard and Anthony Philyaw have also shown that they are ready to play at this level. Blanchard, a 6-3, 245- pound freshman from Miami, FL, is in the rotation on defense and showed that he is ready to contribute after recording four tackles for losses, three sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Philyaw is a 6-1, 210-pound freshman running back from Redondo Beach, Calif., who is third on the team in rushing with 261 yards and 3 TDs and he has caught eight passes for 119 yards and another TD. Philyaw was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week for his performance in the win over FAMU.

INJURY UPDATE: Howard starting strong safety and FCS All America candidate David Julien underwent surgery on his right shoul- der, September 12 and will miss the entire season. The senior from Coral Springs, FL, led the team in tackles the past two years... starting running back Aquanius Freeman has missed the past two games with a high ankle sprain and his return is doubtful.

UNDER THE RADAR: Despite having an outstanding season in 2012, linebacker Tabrian Resby received little fanfare. The 6-0 senior from Athens, GA, finished second on the team in tackles with 82 and ranked among the tops in the MEAC. Resby appears to take up where he left off. He has been a force for the Bison. He is 2nd on the team in tackles with 53 and in tackles for losses with 6.5.

COACHING CHANGE: The Bison have a new offensive line coach in Manny Martinez, who comes over from Texas Southern. Donald Griggs will work with the tight ends.

NEXT UP: Morgan State will host next Saturday at 1 pm while Howard will travel to Dover, DE to take on the Hornets of Delaware State next Saturday at 2 pm.

6 Howard University Head Coach

Rayford Petty Head Coach (Interim) Elon, 1979 First Season Rayford “Ray” Petty enters his second campaign as head football coach of the Howard University Bison. The highly respected Petty served as head coach of the Bison from 2002-06. He also served as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator here under head coach .

Prior to Howard, Petty served as defensive coordinator at both Delaware State and Norfolk State. He spent four seasons with the Hornets, and amongst his team’s defensive highlights, DSU earned a No. 3 MEAC ranking in turnover margin (+0.5 pg) with a total of 22 forced turnovers and four touchdowns scored. In 2008, the DSU defense was ranked second in the MEAC in pass efficiency defense (79.5) and opponents’ first downs (15.3 pg), and third in total defense (288.4 ypg) and pass defense (1441. ypg). The Hornets were named MEAC champions in 2007 and Petty’s unit garnered national rankings in pass efficiency defense (No. 9/105.33), scoring defense (No. 13/18.4 ppg) and overall pass defense (No. 14/169.7). That year, Delaware State finished No. 1 in the MEAC in scoring defense.

Prior to coaching at DSU, Petty posted a 25- 30 record as the head coach of Howard (2002-06). Under Petty’s defen- sive genius, Howard set a NCAA FCS mark in 2003 for most returned fumbles for touchdowns with eight. In 2011, the defense ranked among the nation’s best in tackles for losses, sacks and pass defense.

His resume is impressive as he has helped developed former or current draftees/signees Antoine Bethea (currently with the Indianapolis Colts), Marques Douglas (retired), Ronald Bartell, Jr (currently with the Detroit Lions), Tracy White (retired) and Geoff Pope (retired).

During his first stint with the Bison, he served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator from 1992-99. Petty was the defensive coordinator for the Bison during both the 1993 and 1996 seasons when the team captured Black College National championships. Howard went 11-0 during their 1993 season, earning them an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs as well as the MEAC championship. In 1996, the Bison defeated in the Heritage Bowl.

He received his undergraduate degree from Elon College. He and his wife Hazel have one daughter, Chantell and one son Shawn.

13 Morgan State University Head Coach

Donald Hill-Eley Head Coach MSU Virginia Union University 91’

On February 8, 2002 Donald Hill-Eley became the 18th head football coach in Morgan State his- tory.

Hill, age 44, is starting his 12th season as head coach at Morgan State University – his 22nd season in coaching. Hill, the third winningest coach in MSU history – behind Eddie P. Hurt and Earl C. Banks – has guided Morgan State to four win- ning seasons and is the school’s winningest coach in Div. I-AA (FCS) history.

This past year, the Bears finished 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and scored 30-plus points three times during the season. The season was highlighted by a last second 21-18 victory at North Carolina A&T during an ESPNU nationally televised contest, followed by a season-high 45-6 lopsided victory at Savannah State.

Hill grew up in Suffolk, Virginia, one of the fastest growing cities in Virginia, where he excelled as an athlete at John Yeates High School. After high school he resumed his athletic career at Virginia Union University, where his father had been an All-American linebacker. Hill played four years of football for the Panthers and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology/criminal justice in the spring of 1991. He embarked upon his coaching career the following fall as a Panther assistant coach.

In 1992, he left his alma mater and joined Hampton University. He worked as a Graduate Assistant for the Pirates football team before moving to the League’s (CFL) Baltimore Stallions in 1994. As a wide receiver coach, his team captured the Grey Cup Championship in 1995 and in the same year he also attained his Master’s degree in Counseling from Hampton.

Hill’s next stop was with the CFL’s . He worked as a Guest Coach from 1996 to 1997. The Argos won two Grey Cup Championships during his two years.

Following his stint in the CFL, Hill returned to Hampton where he served from 1997 to 2000 as the Offensive Coordina- tor and Pro Scout liaison. During his tenure, Hill was instrumental in the Pirates winning the mythical Black College National Championship, two MEAC titles and 1999 Heritage Bowl.

Having made a positive contribution at Hampton and eager for a new challenge, Hill accepted an offer to become Offensive Coordinator at Morgan State University in 2001. He quickly established himself at MSU, and cata- pulted the Bears into being an offensive power within the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Highly respected by his peers, Hill is a member of the Coaches Association (AFCA), Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Free and Accepted Masons.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Hill is extremely active within the Baltimore community and is involved with several activities, including the Annual Morgan State Football Camp, a Coaches’ Clinic and Passing Camp. Hill was also instrumental in setting up a mentorship partnership with MSU athletics and local elemen- tary children.

Hill resides in Baltimore, Maryland and has two sons Ayinde (14) and Jacob (5).
