    Brands, Markets and Charitable Ethics: MTV’s EXIT Campaign Jane Arthurs Abstract: This case study of MTV‟s EXIT campaign to raise awareness about the trafficking of women highlights the difficulties faced by charitable organisations when using audience research to evaluate the effectiveness of their media campaigns. If they were to follow the advice to connect with audiences whose ethical and political commitments have been shaped within a media saturated, capitalist culture, they risk reinforcing the positioning of women‟s bodies as consumable products in a pleasure-oriented service economy and further normalisation of the practices the campaigners are seeking to prevent. To be effective in the longer term charities require an ethical approach to media campaigns that recognises their political dimension and the shift in values required. The short term emotional impact on audiences needs to be weighed against these larger ethical and political considerations to avoid the resulting films becoming too individualistic and parochial, a mirror image of their audience‟s „unreconstructed‟ selves. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. Gerolami A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC May 2007 Committee: David Harnish, Advisor Steven Cornelius ii ABSTRACT David Harnish, Advisor This thesis probes the meaning and processes of karaoke song selection at Whiskey Dick’s, a working-class bar in Bowling Green, Ohio. Through research, observations, and interviews conducted from 2005 to 2006, it examines how working-class identity manifests itself in karaoke song selection. As part of positioning the author into the study, I introduce my own background and discuss my history with both karaoke music and working-class culture. An analysis of a single night at Whiskey Dick’s creates a framework for specific observations and gives the reader greater context, while the lengthy enthnography provides for more generalized observations. In interviews and discussions with the singers I attempt to uncover the meaning behind each song selected, discovering how conscious singers are of their choices. For some participants my research eventually impacted how they pick songs thus raising issues of intrusion by the ethnomusicologist. I examine several of the most popular songs at Whiskey Dick’s and analyze the lyrics of each, focusing on class representation within the lyrics. In addition, the difficulties of speaking about music and our musical preferences are explored and discussed in reference to the singers at Whiskey Dick’s. iii This thesis is dedicated to everyone who enjoys making music a part of life.

It addresses and debunks common myths and misconceptions. Normalization takes place through recognition of prevalence and an examination of what others are doing. Based on the research, the single most important factor relative to success in LDRs is communication. Thus, the basic tenets of communication are examined. A self-help manual offers pragmatic suggestions on how to enhance communication. It is hoped that the manual will be an effective psychoeducational tool aimed at increasing the level of satisfaction of couples and a beneficial resource that provides various skill-building exercises in communication. The manual describes a process for reviewing current patterns and provides guidelines for building a more nurturing style if needed. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the many people in my personal and professional life who encouraged and enabled me to become the person I am today.
