The Departed Talent: Matt Damon, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jack Nicholson
The Departed Talent: Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone. Date of review: Thursday the 12th of October, 2006. Director: Martin Scorsese Classification: MA (15+) Duration: 152 minutes We rate it: Five stars. For any serious cinemagoer or lover of film as an art form, the arrival of a new film by Martin Scorsese is a reason to get very excited indeed. Scorsese has long been regarded as one of the greatest of America’s filmmakers; since the mid-1980s he has been regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers in the world, period. With landmark works like Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) and Bringing Out the Dead (1999) to his credit, Scorsese is a director for whom any actor will go the distance, and the casts the director manages to assemble for his every project are extraordinarily impressive. As a visualist Scorsese is a force to be reckoned with, and his soundtracks regularly become known as classic creations; his regular collaborators, including editor Thelma Schoonmaker and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus are the best in their respective fields. Paraphrasing all of this, one could justifiably describe Martin Scorsese as one of the most important and interesting directors on the face of the planet. The Departed, Scorsese’s newest film, is on one level a remake of a very successful Hong Kong action thriller from 2002 called Infernal Affairs. That film, written by Felix Chong and directed by Andrew Lau, set the box office on fire in Hong Kong and became a cult hit around the world. -

"The Who Sings My Generation" (Album)
“The Who Sings My Generation”—The Who (1966) Added to the National Registry: 2008 Essay by Cary O’Dell Original album Original label The Who Founded in England in 1964, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon are, collectively, better known as The Who. As a group on the pop-rock landscape, it’s been said that The Who occupy a rebel ground somewhere between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, while, at the same time, proving to be innovative, iconoclastic and progressive all on their own. We can thank them for various now- standard rock affectations: the heightened level of decadence in rock (smashed guitars and exploding drum kits, among other now almost clichéd antics); making greater use of synthesizers in popular music; taking American R&B into a decidedly punk direction; and even formulating the idea of the once oxymoronic sounding “rock opera.” Almost all these elements are evident on The Who’s debut album, 1966’s “The Who Sings My Generation.” Though the band—back when they were known as The High Numbers—had a minor English hit in 1964 with the singles “I’m the Face”/”Zoot Suit,” it wouldn’t be until ’66 and the release of “My Generation” that the world got a true what’s what from The Who. “Generation,” steam- powered by its title tune and timeless lyric of “I hope I die before I get old,” “Generation” is a song cycle worthy of its inclusive name. Twelve tracks make up the album: “I Don’t Mind,” “The Good’s Gone,” “La-La-La Lies,” “Much Too Much,” “My Generation,” “The Kids Are Alright,” “Please, Please, Please,” “It’s Not True,” “The Ox,” “A Legal Matter” and “Instant Party.” Allmusic.com summarizes the album appropriately: An explosive debut, and the hardest mod pop recorded by anyone. -

Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation. -
Ethics, Gesture and the Western
PERFORMANCE PHILOSOPHY ETHICS, GESTURE AND THE WESTERN MICHAEL MINDEN JESUS COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE Hollywood Western films constitute one of the truly unmistakeable genres in the era of cinema. This reality of genre, and the expectations and effects that it enables in real people, demand to be taken seriously when one thinks about how cultures of performance and fiction relate to the challenge to think creatively about ethics. However, the commercial and formulaic nature of the products of Hollywood seem to represent a kind of medial discourse quite antithetical to serious ethical reflection. Giorgio Agamben is in my view exemplary in the creativity of his thinking about ethics. As part of this engagement he is deeply interested in what he calls the ethics of gesture in performance and film. I would like, in what follows, to think about the Western, despite its origins in the sphere of commodities, within an Agambenian framework. At the same time my intention is to exploit the genre’s accessibility with a view to probing and clarifying Agamben’s sometimes tangled elucubrations. Drawing on David Foster Wallace’s reflections on genre structures in his novel Infinite Jest, my conclusion will be that alongside an ethics of gesture, we should also be thinking about an ethics of genre when we reflect upon a possible ethical life today. The Hollywood Western: An Unlikely Place for an Ethics of Gesture? Agamben takes the position that western society of the twentieth century ‘lost its gestures’ in the sense that pathological forms of the loss of bodily control, ‘ataxia, tics, and dystonia’, became the norm, and thus invisible and forgotten (2000, 51). -

Your Paper's Title Starts Here
6th International Conference on Management, Education, Information and Control (MEICI 2016) An Analysis of Grammatical Metaphor of Oscar-Winning Film Titles Zhenghua Tan1, a * and Yiting Wu2, b 1School of foreign languages, Jianghan University, Wuhan, Hubei Province, China [email protected], [email protected] Keywords: Grammatical metaphor; Nominalization; Film titles; Translation strategies Abstract. Grammatical Metaphor is an incongruent expression in realization of meaning on lexical and grammatical level, of which the main form is nominalization. It is divided into ideational metaphor and interpersonal metaphor. By analysis of the titles of thirty American Oscar-winning films, it can be found that nominalization is a common phenomenon. Based on this, the English film titles discussed may enlighten the Chinese film titles translation in cross-cultural communication and nominalization should be a tendency of expression form when translating Chinese film titles into English, in order to convey information of them more concisely and efficiently. Introduction During the increasingly frequent cross-cultural communication, more and more Chinese films have access to enter foreign film markets. According to the statistics, the production of Chinese feature films up to 686 while the imported films are only 63 in 2015. Moreover, the sale of Chinese films abroad is 2.77 billion Yuan, up 48.13% over last year. Thus it can be seen that export of films will become a trend in the future. Considering this, film translation plays a fairly important role. And title translation comes first when films are faced with overseas propaganda. It is generally known that a title is the soul of a film.
