DISCALCED CARMELITE PROPER OFFICES OF CARMELITE SAINTS AND BLESSEDS IN THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS 2007 Second edition January 3 BLESSED KURIAKOS ELIAS CHAVARA Priest Blessed Kuriakos Elias Chavara, co-founder and first prior general of the congregation of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate, was born at Kainakary in Kerala, India, February 10, 1805. He entered the seminary in 1818, and was ordained priest in 1829. He made his religious profession in 1855, in the congregation he founded. In 1861 he was named vicar general for the Syro- Malabar church; in this capacity he defended ecclesial unity threatened by schism when Mar Tomas Rochos was sent from Mesopotamia to consecrate Nestorian bishops. Throughout his life he worked for the renovation of the church in Malabar. He was also co-founder in 1866 of the congregation of the Sisters of the Mother of Carmel. Above all, he was a man of prayer, zealous for the Eucharistic Lord and devoted to the Immaculate Virgin Mary. He died at Koonammavu in 1871. His body was transferred to Mannanam in 1889. From the common of pastors or of holy men (religious) Office of Readings SECOND READING From a note written on the day of his death, by his spiritual director, Fr. Leopold Beccaro. • Decadent Perfume: Under the Skin and Through the Page
Decadent Perfume: Under the Skin and through the Page Cheryl Krueger On 1 October 1912, the New York Times ran the provocative report ‘Perfume now Injected: Latest Fad in Paris. Skin Becomes Saturated with Aroma’. Similar articles had been circulating since at least 1896, when the L.A. Times called subcutaneous perfume injection a ‘Queer Fad of French Women’.1 Was it an urban myth? Were Americans overreacting to quirks of continental fashion? Or were French women in fact infusing themselves with perfume? Max Nordau had already deemed seekers of olfactory sensation degenerate (502), warning that pleasure in smell becomes a ‘malady of love […] from which only the degenerate suffer’ (501). Willful puncturing of the skin recalls an algophilic behaviour that one turn-of-the-century practitioner attributed to a ‘degener- ate’s fantasy’ frequently observed in hysterical women: sticking oneself with pins (Clérambault 29–30). The image of penetrating the body with scented liquid suggests fashionable drug fads of the period as well: ingestion and injec- tion of ether, opium eating, morphine shooting parties.2 At least one reporter emphasized the correlation between perfume injection and drug abuse: A Paris physician (says our correspondent) has nipped in the bud a habit which promised to be as dangerous as that of morphine. It appears that a well-known Parisienne had discovered that subcutaneous injections of certain perfumes gave their special fragrance to the skin, and that it was quite possible to exhale the lily, the rose, or any other floral scent. (‘Injec- tions of Perfumes’, New York Times, 1898) This attention to the biological intimacy of perfume injection, its perilous eccentricity and the physical alteration that results, bespeaks a suspicion of perfume abuse that seems to have intensified as fragrance products became more affordable, more available and more feminized in the nineteenth century.

  • Echoes from the Haisla Diaspora in Eden Robinson's Monkey Beach by Gerard Joshua Moore Copyright © 2011
Contacting the Dead: Echoes from the Haisla Diaspora in Eden Robinson‘s Monkey Beach by Gerard Joshua Moore A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Department of English, Film and Theatre University of Manitoba Winnipeg Copyright © 2011 by Gerard Joshua Moore i ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis was to posit an explanation of recurrent liminal imagery in Eden Robinson‘s novel Monkey Beach by exploring the ways that the text can be read as an expression of diasporic awareness. The Haisla in Monkey Beach experience a form of exile that is atypical because it occurs within the limits of their homeland. This thesis explores the dimensions of this exile by examining the ways that the Haisla community‘s connection to its homeland has been altered in the wake of colonial contact. In Monkey Beach the Haisla diaspora is present in the juxtaposition of traditional narratives with the current realities of post-contact Canadian society, in the novel‘s assessment of the ongoing repercussions of residential schools, and in the cross-cultural resonances that emerge from the narrator‘s descriptions of and interactions with the spirit world. What this study revealed is that although Monkey Beach exposes disruptions in the connections between the Haisla and their homeland, the adaptation of Aboriginal storytelling techniques to the form of the novel represents both a positive continuation of indigenous traditions and an active resistance of cultural erasure. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First I would like to thank the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for the funding I received during the 2008-2009 school year.

Key areas explored included reasons for testifying; socio-economic impact of testifying; security concerns; physical and psychological Testimonies Testimonies well-being, and perceptions about justice and the ICTY. A Pilot Study into the long-term impact Between 2013 and 2015, the VWS conducted interviews with of bearing witness before the ICTY 300 fact witnesses. The sample comprised 47 women and 253 men across a broad geographic area in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo and Serbia. To date, no study of this scale has ever utilised a systematic and scientific sampling process of such a large population of witnesses called by all parties (Prosecution, Defence and Chambers). The involvement of VWS allowed for the inclusion of witnesses who would have otherwise been excluded, such as witnesses whose identity is protected. UNT, as an external research partner, ensured the reliability and validity of the research process, including the independent analysis of data.
