The Voice of Beth El Congregation 13 School News Hebrew School in Hunt Valley By Jill D. Eisen Melissa West loves the convenience of a Neighborhood School and how much her daughters enjoy going to class! Yes, we said it - the students of the Hebrew School in Hunt Valley love going to class. They have over a 95% attendance rate, and they love their teacher Jillian Book Manko. “Emma, age 8, and Sophie, age 7, absolutely LOVE their current teacher, Morah Jill,” West said. “They have always enjoyed their other teachers as well. They are kind, caring and really want the girls to have a great Jewish experience.” The Hunt Valley location started in 2012 in Heidi Berman’s law office, Kinney Law, on York and Shawan Road. The class is a one-room school house that meets in the conference room with students ranging in age from 7 - 12. Most of the families who participate in this location are interfaith. The curriculum is designed to create excitement about Judaism and confidence in the students’ Jewish identity. The students are learning to read Hebrew, speak a little Modern Hebrew, discuss Jewish thoughts, values, and history. They also practice Jewish holidays, mitzvot and rituals. The students learn by doing; i.e., each week they take turns leading the Shabbat rituals complete with challah and grape juice. “It is really nice as a parent to be able to drop both girls off at the same time and the teacher can adapt the class to the different age groups,” West said. “They are learning their letters and are starting to really feel comfortable explaining holidays and traditions to others. Emma and Sophie enjoy Morah Jill’s creative classroom activities that make participation and learning easy and fun.” Sophie West, age 7 Emma West, age 8 Ben Berman, age 10 Please contact Jill Eisen at 410-484-4543 or [email protected] for more information, arrange a class visit, or an application.
