CROXBY PRIMARY ACADEMY GRADUATE AWARD CHINA ANNE MC CLAIN INTRODUCTION Name: China Anne McClain Date of Birth: August 25th 1998 Parents: Michael McClain and Shontell McClain Siblings: Lauryn McClain and Sierra McClain (China is the youngest) Famous For: Being a TV star EARLY LIFE China Anne McClain was born on August 25, 1998. Her father, Michael McClain, is a music producer and has produced many amazing albums. McClain's career began when she was seven years old, portraying Alexis in the film The Gospel, then China James in Daddy’s Little Girl. She became known for starring as Jazmine Payne in the television series Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. A.N.T.FARM China plays China Parks on A.N.T. Farm. This is a show revolving around China Parks (an 11-year-old musical prodigy), who has just become the newest student in the Advanced Natural Talents (A.N.T.) program at Webster High School (a school for gifted middle schoolers) in San Francisco. MUSIC China and her sisters, Sierra and Lauryn, are also known for forming the group: The McClain Sisters. They released their first song Rise in March 2012 for the nature film Chimpanzee and that same month the group was the opening act for Big Time Rush. Later they formed a YouTube channel named Thrii pronounced ‘three’. In 2014, Lauryn and China created a YouTube channel where they posted singing videos, challenges, tags, and Q&As. Sierra appeared in several of the channel's videos. As of August 2020, the channel has approximately 701,000 subscribers and 29 million views. China portrays Uma in the films Descendants 2 and Descendants 3. In Descendants she sings: What’s my Name?, It’s Going Down, Night Falls, Night is Young, Break this Down, Kiss the Girl, Pour Unfortunate Souls. Reese Spring 2021 WMNST 492W: Senior Capstone Seminar Dr. Jill Wood Reese 2 INTRODUCTION The popularized phrase “celebrity trainwreck” has taken off in the last ten years, and the phrase actively evokes specified images (Doyle, 2017). These images usually depict young women hounded by paparazzi cameras that are most likely drunk or high and half naked after a wild night of partying (Doyle, 2017). These girls then become the emblem of celebrity, bad girl femininity (Doyle, 2017; Kiefer, 2016). The trainwreck is always a woman and is usually subject to extra attention in the limelight (Doyle, 2017). Trainwrecks are in demand; almost everything they do becomes front page news, especially if their actions are seen as scandalous, defamatory, or insane. The exponential growth of the internet in the early 2000s created new avenues of interest in celebrity life, including that of social media, gossip blogs, online tabloids, and collections of paparazzi snapshots (Hamad & Taylor, 2015; Mercer, 2013). What resulted was 24/7 media access into the trainwreck’s life and their long line of outrageous, commiserable actions (Doyle, 2017). Kristy Fairclough coined the term trainwreck in 2008 as a way to describe young, wild female celebrities who exemplify the ‘good girl gone bad’ image (Fairclough, 2008; Goodin-Smith, 2014). While the coining of the term is rather recent, the trainwreck image itself is not; in their book titled Trainwreck, Jude Ellison Doyle postulates that the trainwreck classification dates back to feminism’s first wave with Mary Wollstonecraft (Anand, 2018; Doyle, 2017).

Male counterparts in similar programs aired by the same network openly displayed their extraordinariness and were portrayed as having considerable and usually uncontested agency. These alternative depictions of differential hiding and secrecy in sitcoms are far from speculative; these ideas were synthesized from analyses of sitcom episodes, commentary in magazine articles, and web-based discussions of these series. Content analysis, industrial analysis (including interviews with industry personnel), and critical discourse analysis utilizing the multi-faceted lens of feminist theory throughout is used in this study to demonstrate a unique decade in children’s programming about super powered girls.
