    From Disney to Disaster: The Disney Corporation’s Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks BY Kelsey N. Reese Spring 2021 WMNST 492W: Senior Capstone Seminar Dr. Jill Wood Reese 2 INTRODUCTION The popularized phrase “celebrity trainwreck” has taken off in the last ten years, and the phrase actively evokes specified images (Doyle, 2017). These images usually depict young women hounded by paparazzi cameras that are most likely drunk or high and half naked after a wild night of partying (Doyle, 2017). These girls then become the emblem of celebrity, bad girl femininity (Doyle, 2017; Kiefer, 2016). The trainwreck is always a woman and is usually subject to extra attention in the limelight (Doyle, 2017). Trainwrecks are in demand; almost everything they do becomes front page news, especially if their actions are seen as scandalous, defamatory, or insane. The exponential growth of the internet in the early 2000s created new avenues of interest in celebrity life, including that of social media, gossip blogs, online tabloids, and collections of paparazzi snapshots (Hamad & Taylor, 2015; Mercer, 2013). What resulted was 24/7 media access into the trainwreck’s life and their long line of outrageous, commiserable actions (Doyle, 2017). Kristy Fairclough coined the term trainwreck in 2008 as a way to describe young, wild female celebrities who exemplify the ‘good girl gone bad’ image (Fairclough, 2008; Goodin-Smith, 2014). While the coining of the term is rather recent, the trainwreck image itself is not; in their book titled Trainwreck, Jude Ellison Doyle postulates that the trainwreck classification dates back to feminism’s first wave with Mary Wollstonecraft (Anand, 2018; Doyle, 2017).

Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series,” the Hub Network’s hit, spooky anthology series, inspired by the master of kids’ horror R.L. Stine (“Goosebumps”), returns Saturday, October 4 at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT with several stand-out guest stars. The all-star list includes China Anne McClain (“A.N.T. Farm,” “Sing Your Face Off”), Sean Giambrone (“The Goldbergs”), Mason Cook (“The Lone Ranger,” “Legends”), Luke Benward (“Cloud 9,” “Ravenswood”), Nolan Gould (“Modern Family”), Joey King (“OZ the Great and Powerful,” “Fargo”), Freya Tingley (“Hemlock Grove,” “Once Upon a Time”) and acclaimed actress Margot Kidder (“Superman”). The fourth season of the half-hour series will introduce a new set of spine-chilling thrills taking viewers young and old on a creepy new adventure every week on the Hub Network, champions of family fun and the only network dedicated to providing kids and their families entertainment they can watch together. The fright-fest kicks off with two episodes airing back-to-back featuring Sean Giambrone and Mason Cook. In the episode “I’m Not Martin” airing at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT, Giambrone stars as “Sean,” a hospital patient set to get his tonsils removed, but fears the cursed hospital may have other plans that include amputating his foot.

Because of the time frame in which they were reported, the accomplishments are inclusive of items that fall between both the 2014 calendar year and the 2015 fiscal year. Cemeteries • Provided services for 835 funerals. • Sold 447 graves. • Installed 444 memorial foundations. • Installed 25 trees and planted 2,500 spring and fall annuals throughout all cemeteries. • Provided 28 historical tours of Elmwood and Forest Lawn Cemeteries to 621 participants. • Achieved 100 percent employee participation in the United Way Campaign. • Organized 600 volunteers who provided 8,560 hours in cemetery conservation and restoration work. City Attorney • Collected $7.2 million from January 1, 2014, through December 31, 2014 from general collections (bankruptcies, meal taxes, business licenses, HAZMAT, etc.), city appeals (fines and restitutions), and suits filed in the Circuit and General District Courts. • Opened 5,658 new legal issues and matters. City Auditor • Initiated six audits, continued five audits, and continued investigation of eight allegations. • Investigated 33 reported allegations of fraud, waste, and abuse from the fraud hotline. • Issued eight audit, investigations, and special review/management advisory reports. • Participated in external quality control reviews (peer reviews) of other government entities' audit departments or offices. • Presented at the FY 2015 Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Entitlement Subrecipient Training session hosted by the Department of Neighborhood Development. • Presented with the Department of Human Resources "Tone it up: Ethical Fitness" to the constitutional officers, council appointees, and general employees. Presentation was to introduce the city's first comprehensive training program highlighting ethics, workplace culture, professionalism and fraud, waste, and abuse prevention.
