Tampok dito ang mga artikulong nakatuon sa Filipino bilang larangan ng kaalaman mula sa mga mananaliksik at iskolar sa bansa. 1. Maaaring maging bahagi ng journal ang mga pananaliksik ukol sa anumang paksa na may kinalaman sa mga napapanahong usapin at konsepto sa Filipino kaugnay ng iba pang disiplina/konsepto gaya ng: relihiyon, teolohiya, edukasyon, panitikan, agham panlipunan, ekonomiya, pilosopiya, sining, mass media, agham, arkitektura, politika, wika, kultura, sikolohiya, globalisasyon, identidad, kasarian, pamamahala, teknolohiya, komunikasyon, ideolohiya, agham at teknolohiya. 2. Ang papel ay nararapat na magtaglay ng sumusunod na katangian: a. napapanahon, interdisiplinaryo at makabuluhang paksang makapag- aambag sa diskursong Filipino na maaaring makapagpayaman sa mga kurso sa pananaliksik sa Filipino. b. may sapat na lawak at lalim ng pagtalakay sa paksa batay sa mga matitibay na ebidensya, angkop na metodo at masinop na pagkilala sa mga sanggunian. c. tuwiran at malinaw ang pagtalakay sa paksa ayon sa pamantayan ng mahusay na akademikong publikasyon. 3. Ang mungkahing papel ay maaaring bahagi ng gradwadong tesis, disertasyon o presentasyon sa isang kumperensiya o anumang pananaliksik na hindi pa nalalathala sa anumang anyo. 4. Ang haba ng papel ay hindi hihigit sa 6,500 salita. Kalakip nito ang 250-300 salitang abstrak at limang susing salita sa format na Times New Roman 12, doble-espasyo, Microsoft Word 97-2003. 5. Ang dokumentasyon ay estilong parentetikal-sanggunian ayon sa format ng MLA Seventh Edition. 6. Tungkulin ng awtor na kumuha ng permiso para sa anumang materyal na may karapatang-ari at isumite ito sa Lupon ng Editor. 7. Tuwing Hunyo 30 ang deadline ng pagsusumite ng papel. 8. Para sa sabskripsyon at iba pang katanungan, makipag-ugnayan sa Lupon ng Editor sa [email protected]. MENSAHE Mahalaga ang ambag ng HASAAN Journal sa pagpapalaganap ng mga usaping pang-ademiko na sumasaklaw sa mga larangang may kinalaman sa wika, edukasyon, etnograpiya, kultura, pilosopiya, politika at iba pa. Mainam ang pagtalakay sa mga paksa tulad ng kapangyarihan ng tsismis sa lipunan; ang papel ng wika sa eksklusyon sa sistema ng edukasyon sa Pilipinas; ang pagbuo at paghubog ng mahabang kasaysayan sa pagkataong Pilipino; ang pagsusuri sa larong basketbol upang maipakita ang halaga ng wika, etika, at ng pilosopiya ng gilid-gilid; ang kinalaman ng kultura ng bayan sa relihiyon; ang paghahambing ng mga gamit ng iba’t ibang dayalekto; at ang ugnayan ng pag-iisang dibdib sa kultura ng pamayanan. Ang mga pag-aaral na nabanggit ay patunay lamang ng patuloy na pagyaman ng kultura ng pananaliksik sa unibersidad. Tinatalakay ng bawat sanaysay ang mga bagay at karanasan na may kinalaman sa ating kamalayang Pilipino. Mahusay at masusi rin ang paghahanay ng mga isyu at datos sa mga na- sabing sanaysay. Sa unang edisyon ng HASAAN Journal, pinatutunayang buhay na buhay ang gawaing akademiko sa unibersidad. Malugod kong ipinaaabot ang aking pagbati sa Departamento ng Fili- pino ng Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas sa pamumuno ni Dr. Roberto Ampil sa paglulunsad ng kauna-unahang isyu ng HASAAN Journal. FR. Rektor MENSAHE Katulad ng tubig na patuloy na dumadaloy sa ilog, ang wika ay patuloy na dumadaloy sa iba’t ibang henerasyon ng mga gumagamit nito at iba’t ibang panahon na kinakatawan nito. Hindi maiiwasang may mabago. Hindi maikakailang may pagbabago. Dahil dito, ang patuloy na paglinang at pagpapayaman ng wika ay isinusulong ng isang institusyong akademiko hindi lamang sa pamamagitan ng pagtuturo o pagdaraos ng mga eksibit, patimpalak sa wika, at pagpupulong. Habang natututo ang ating mga mag-aaral sa wika, magandang maitanong rin natin sa ating mga sarili kung ano ba ang ating itinuturo? Ano kaya ang maidaragdag natin sa mga kaalamang dati na nating ibinabahagi? May mga katanungan bang dapat nating hanapan ng kasagutan? Paano natin mabibigyan ng kasagutan ang ating mga tanong? Marahil, ang ganang maghanap ng mga kasagutan at ibahagi ang mga ito ang nagtulak sa ating mga gurong-mananaliksik upang maging kasama ng unang labas ng HASAAN, ang opisyal na journal sa Filipino ng Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas. Bagaman ilang taon pa lamang ang nakalipas mula nang muling itinatag ang UST Departamento ng Filipino, narito na ang HASAAN na maglilinang hindi lamang ng wikang Filipino kundi ng kakayahan ng mga gurong mulat na sa kaisipang ang itinuturo, ang pagtuturo at ang nagtuturo ay yayabong lamang sa pamamagitan ng patuloy na pag-aaral at pananaliksik. Isang mainit na pagbati sa Departamento ng Filipino! Mabuhay ang mga gurong-mananaliksik! Mabuhay ang HASAAN Journal! PROP. CLARITA D. CARILLO, PhD Bise Rektor sa mga Gawaing Akademiko MENSAHE Ang kailangan ng isang isda na gutom at naghahangad na makabilang at makasabay sa mga nilalang sa karagatan ay sapat na pagkain, pag-aalaga at pagsasanay upang makalangoy nang simbilis, kung hindi man mas mabilis, sa isang mas malaki at mas mapagsubok na dagat. Hindi nito kailangan ng mga bagay na pipigil sa mga hangarin nito. Hindi nito kailangang makulong sa isang palaisdaan kung ang nais nitong malipol ay ang karagatan. Tulad ng isang isda, ang Departamento ng Filipino ay hindi dapat malugmok sa kaisipang wala na itong maaaring pagharian maliban sa apat na sulok ng UST, na wala na itong ibubuga sa labas at liban sa lugar na ito. Mapanghamon ito, malakas at matibay ang loob, determinado na suungin ang malawak at mapagsubok na mundo. Nakikita ko na kung paano ito ngayon nakatayo sa may dalampasigan at tila tinatanaw at iniisip kung ano ang mayroon sa mga lugar sa ibayo, at kung ano ang kaya nitong ihandog sa mundong nasa kabilang dulo ng karagatang ito. Bagaman, apat na taon pa lamang muling naitatag ang departamento ng Filipino, hinangad na nitong makisabay kundi man lagpasan ang nagawa ng iba pang departamentong nauna. Mula sa HASAAN Pambansang Komperensiya ngayon ay isinilang ang HASAAN Journal upang mapatunayan na ang guro ay hindi lamang nagtuturo sa klase kundi isa ring mananaliksik. HASAAN ang pangalan ng opisyal na journal sa Filipino ng Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas. Gaya ng pangalan nito ang mga saliksik ay hinasa upang maging matalim na armas na magagamit sa pag-aaral at pagtuturo ng pananaliksik. Inaasahan na ang journal na ito ay magsisilbing daluyan ng mga kaalaman at karunungan ng mga mag- aaral, guro, mananaliksik at manunulat. Mabuhay ang HASAAN! Mabuhay ang Wikang Filipino! Usapin ng pagkiling sa mga nagtutunggaling ideolohiya ang pamimili ng wika, konteksto at paksang sasaliksikin. May malaking kakulangan sa kritikal na pagtataya ng kalagayan ng pananaliksik sa Filipino ang kasalukuyang daluyong ng elaborasyon at estandardisasyon ng wika sa mga multidisiplinal na pananaliksik. Tila patas ang tingin sa iba’t ibang wika at at may malabnaw na pagtingin sa usapin ng kapangyarihang bumabalot dito. Sa tunggalian, nasa posisyong mapaggiit pa rin ang maka-Filipinong pananaliksik. Kakikitaan ito ng hindi pa nagaganap na tagumpay ngunit hindi rin napapatdang lakas upang itanghal ang pagiging esensyal nito sa loob at labas ng akademya. Sa pagkiling ng mananaliksik sa nagtatalabang puwersa, nagaganap ang tungkuling sosyal ng pananaliksik. Ang pamimili ng isang iskolar sa wika at paksang gagamitin sa pananaliksik ay malinaw na pagkiling sa mga nagtutunggaliang ideolohiya sa loob ng akademya. Dinanas ni Bienvenido Lumbera, Pambansang Alagad ng Sining sa Panitikan at isang Tomasino, ang tunggalian sa pamimili at pagkiling.

    A Corpus Linguistic Analysis of Philippine English (PE) in Student Publication Editorials DAPHNE RASHID TADEO Researcher Master of Arts in Education Major in English March 2012 Mylene A. Manalansan, MAED Adviser Abstract Qualitative in nature, this research is centered on corpus linguistic analysis of Philippine English (PE) in selected student publication editorials in Pampanga. The corpus of the editorials was carefully analyzed to determine if Kapampangan student authors have an awareness of the Philippine English variety and whether the patterns and features of this variety used in the editorials are acceptable or not. A total of 27 student publications were collated within 2007 to 2011. Text analysis was used with the aid of triangulation method to validate the use and acceptability of PE features. Validation was done through the use of (1) the Oxford Dictionary of the English Language, an electronic dictionary, (2) the Webster’s unabridged dictionary of the English Language and (3) the Macquarie International Dictionary, a compendium of acceptable Philippine English terms to guarantee if realized terms are acceptable or not. School publications were coded, possible PE terms were extracted, and subsequently analyzed using the two aforementioned Standard English language dictionaries as bases for Standard American English dictionaries (SAE).The extracted terms were then categorized under lexicon and their morphological processes, and syntax (code-mixing and code-switching). The same were presented in their original sentence form providing explanations as regards their usage in the editorials. Non-existent extracted terms in SAE dictionaries were then verified using the PE dictionary to determine whether they are part of the accepted PE features or not.

    AN ANNOTATED GUIDE TO PHILIPPINE SERIALS THE CORNELL UNIVERSITY SOUTHEAST ASIA PROGRAM The Southeast Asia Program was organized at Cornell University in _the Department of Far Eastern Studies in 1950. It is a teaching and research program of interdisciplinary studies in the humanities, social sciences, and some natural sciences. It deals with Southeast Asia as a region, and with the individual countries of the area: Brunei, Burma, Indonesia, the Khmer Republic, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The activities of the Program are carried on both at Cornell and in Southeast Asia. They include an undergraduate and graduate curriculum at Cornell which provides instruction by specialists in Southeast Asian cultural history and present-day affairs and offers intensive training in each of the major languages of the area. The Pro9ram sponsors group research projects on Thailand, on Indonesia, on the Philippines, and on linguistic studies of the languages of the area. At the same time, individual staff and students of the Program have done field research in every Southeast Asian country. The preferred language medium they use to do so, however, may convey their perception and attitude towards languages. This study aimed to determine the preferred language that student journalists use in their articles, the reason for their preference, and their attitude towards English, Filipino, and their vernacular language. Mixed qualitative and quantitative methods were used as research design. Data were collected through distributing survey questionnaires to 58 student journalists in Mindano State Univeristy-Marawi during academic year 2013-2014 and conducting interviews to a random sample of 12 from those surveyed. Results showed that most of the student journalists prefer English while only a few uses Filipino and none prefer vernacular in writing.

    6 Voices and choices in reproductive rights: Scholarship and activism Sylvia Estrada-Claudio There has been a long struggle for reproductive health in the Philippines. In this chapter, I reflect on the process leading up to the passage of the Reproductive Health Bill in the Philippines in December 2012. Although there is much to be dissatisfied with in the implementation of the Bill, the process leading up to its passage in 2012 is instructive. This prompts reflection on the role of academics in promoting social change, the possibility of coalitions between academics and activists, and the importance of transnational solidarity, even in campaigns focused largely in a particular national context. Opposition to the Bill, on the part of the Catholic Church of the Philippines, also drew on international connections and communication between conservative lobby groups. Furthermore, policies on reproductive health and human rights issues have international repercussions where they weaken the efficacy of international agreements on such issues. On 13 December 2012, the House of Representatives (HOR) of the Republic of the Philippines passed, on second reading, House Bill 4244,1 better known as the RH (Reproductive Health) Bill.
