January 26, 1996 Dear Audie Supporter, Welcome to the First Newsletter of Our Second Year of Operation. Looking Back to Last
January 26, 1996 Dear Audie Supporter, Welcome to the first newsletter of our second year of operation. Looking back to last year, we are pleased with the progress made in the growth of our club. Our membership has gradually and consistently increased. We hope that more of you will take an active role in supporting the club with written articles, suggestions, comments and general feedback. We urge the membership to take full advantage of our classified format. ************************************************************************** Dr. Buddy Patterson, Director of the Harold B. Simpson Confederate Research Center at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas has notified me of exciting news. Hill College has received a gift to build a new library. The area currently occupied by the library will be made available for use by the History Complex for expansion. The preliminary plan will move the Audie Murphy Museum Collection into the new space. The Confederate Research Center will expand into the six rooms it currently occupies. The new library will take at least a year to complete after which the former library will need to be remodeled. Also, Hill College has received a grant from the Summerlee Foundation to fund a part time position on the History Complex staff. The grant is for three years and may be extended on a year to year basis. Dr. Odie Faulk of Temple, Texas has been hired to fill this position. Dr. Faulk is a retired professor of history who has published over 40 books. He will manage their archival material to make sure that it is used safely and he will encourage the publication of scholarly work. -

INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. If you are unable to locate a specific item in this inventory, please contact the reading room. -

Audie Murphy
Audie Murphy Audie Leon Murphy (20 June 1925 – 28 May 1971) was an American soldier, actor, songwriter, and rancher. He was one of Audie Murphy the most decorated American combat soldiers of World War II. He received every military combat award for valor available from the U.S. Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism. Murphy received the Medal of Honor for valor that he demonstrated at the age of 19 for single-handedly holding off a company of German soldiers for an hour at the Colmar Pocket in France in January 1945, then leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition. Murphy was born into a large family of sharecroppers in Hunt County, Texas. His father abandoned them, and his mother died when he was a teenager. Murphy left school in fifth grade to pick cotton and find other work to help support his family; his skill with a hunting rifle helped feed his family. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Murphy's older sister helped him to falsify documentation about his birthdate in order to meet the minimum-age requirement for enlisting in the military. Turned down initially for being underweight by the Army, Navy and the Marine Corps, he eventually was able to enlist in the Audie Murphy photographed in 1948 Army. He first saw action in the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily; wearing the U.S. Army khaki "Class A" then in 1944 he participated in the Battle of Anzio, the liberation (tropical service) uniform with full-size of Rome, and the invasion of southern France. -
Williamburg Film Festival
Vol. 5, No. 4 October, 1999 SMALL WORLD by club member Beatrice Castaneda of Alvin, Texas I had been meaning to ask my uncle if he knew Audie Murphy since July of 1998 when I first heard about Audie on AMC cable. But I put it off thinking there was no way because my uncle served in the Pacific and Audie fought against the Germans. Well, when I got back from the Audie Murphy Days trip to Greenville my sister called. She had asked my uncle, who's name is Able, to sign the stamp petition and he refused. According to my sister he got angry and said “Yes, I knew Audie Murphy. Doggone him, he was always stealing my coats.” He refused to sign the petition. It was hard to believe because my uncle is the kindest man imaginable and would never lie about anything like that. Well, my daughter and I just returned from a trip to my uncle's house and this is the story. He met Audie at a hospital in Topeka KS where he was working as a medic. He was a private. He said it gets very cold in Kansas and, my uncle had several army issue fuzzy coats but the one that he liked most was one that he bought and paid for himself. It was a better quality coat with a band or belt across the chest. He said everybody borrowed that coat from him and Audie was the last one to borrow it and did not return it before he “went off to Washington”. -

LAMP POST FILM ACCESSORY NEWS LearnAboutMoviePosters.com November 2015 MOVIE POSTERS FOUND UNDER FLOOR MAY BRING SIX FIGURES AT HERITAGE AUCTIONS Forgotten trove holds five, never-before-seen-posters of Hollywood history; offered at public auction Nov. 21-22 in Dallas DALLAS – A trove of a 17 rare movie posters discovered under a linoleum floor in southern Pennsylvania may be worth more than $140,000 when they cross the block at public auction Nov. 21- 22 in Dallas. The find holds lost pieces of Hollywood history – including five, never-before-seen posters such as Clark Gable’s first starring role and the Style D one sheet for Tarzan The Ape Man, which is expected to sell for more than $40,000 at Heritage Auctions. The stash was discovered last summer by Bob and Dylan Basta while renovating a back room in their father’s newly-purchased home. When Bob and Dylan removed a dated linoleum floor they discovered layers of newspapers from the 1940s and 14 movie posters from obscure films they had never heard of well as the well-known Tarzan. They quickly called their father, Robert, to report the discovery. “When you work on homes like this all your life you always dream of that day when you actually find something rare and it seldom comes,” said Robert Basta. “I‘m excited for my boys, now they have a story and a memory that will last their lifetimes.” Robert said many people would place paper, especially newspapers, under linoleum to help cushion the floor and eliminate wear. But once his sons started researching the movie titles online they quickly learned the posters under the floor were not your average discovery. -

The Recipient of This Year's Audie Murphy Patriotism Award Is
January 26, 2000 Vol. 6, No. 1 AUDIE GOT HIS STAMP! On October 14, 1999 the post office announced the issuance of an Audie Murphy commemorative 33 cent stamp in their year 2000 program. Rather than an artist‟s rendering, the post office used a black & white photo, apparently submitted by Mrs. Murphy. The photo was taken June 2, 1945 after Audie's Medal of Honor ceremony in Werfen, Austria. It shows a young smiling Audie, wearing a steel pot. In the lower right corner of the stamp is a color image of the 3rd Infantry Division shoulder sleeve insignia. Unfortunately, Audie‟s stamp is but one of four images in a block. The other three dignitaries include Alvin York, Medal of Honor recipient from World War I; Omar Bradley and John Hines. All of us preferred a full sheet of just Audie, but something is better than nothing. The reality of this stamp is due in very large part to club member Diane and James Thomason of Cash, Texas. No announcement has yet been made about the date the Murphy stamp will be issued. (Stan Smith) ************************************************************************ SPIRIT OF AMERICA FESTIVAL, JULY 4, 1999 DECATUR, ALABAMA: The recipients of this year‟s Audie Murphy Patriotism Award were the Navajo Code Talkers. The Navajo code was top secret during the war and remained so until 1968. Three members of the Navajo Code Talkers Association accepted the Audie Murphy Patriotism Award. The Navajos didn‟t rely just on their unique language to transmit secrets; they developed a code from it and devised a phonetic alphabet because there is no Navajo alphabet or written form. -
