& District NewsSeptember 2015 Back to school Meden Celebrates 50 Years Pupils and staff past and present recently attended the 50th anniversary of the opening of Meden School. Former teachers present included Mr Ellis, Mr Phoenix, Mrs Davies, Mr Bird and Mrs Buxton. Mrs Janet Brashaw, current Headteacher, welcomed everyone to the event which included musical entertainment provided by former pupils who played songs from the five decades the school has been open, as well as an exhibition of photos and memorabilia. There were refreshments on offer including a barbecue in the House Court. Mr Barrie Ellis, who was the first head teacher, returned to the school especially for the celebrations and spoke to a packed hall. He spoke about the changes which have taken place since the 1960s and recalled the first pupil to walk down the school path, who he was reunited with at the anniversary celebrations He paid tribute to the two deputy head teachers who were appointed with him in 1965, Mr Sid Thompson and Mrs Kate Spiers, both of whom have since passed away. He also recalled the two caretakers during his time as Head as well as the first Chair of school governors, Alderman William Foster. Mr Ellis, now 88, told how new buildings were built as the school population grew from 600 to 1500 children in the 1970s and the fight he had with the education department at County Hall who wanted to implement an open plan design which he said he managed to alter.
