The term Two Spirit does not simply mean someone who is a Native American and/or Alaska Native (AI/AN) and gay. Traditionally, AI/AN Two Spirit people were male, female, and sometimes intersexed individuals who combined activities and traits of both men and women. In early Native societies, those who identified as Two Spirit were respected as spiritual leaders and often served special roles such as storytellers, counselors, and healers. Colonization and historical trauma have threatened these traditions, however Two Spirit people throughout North America are reviving the Two Spirit role. The LGBTQ2S population has unique healthcare needs, is at greater risk for multiple health threats, and often experiences low quality care due to a variety of factors, including discrimination. i The LGBTQ2S community is at a higher risk for suicide due to a lack of peer support and harassment, as well as mental health conditions and substance misuse. For LGBTQ2S people aged 10 to 24 years, suicide is one of the leading causes of death, and those youth are three to four times more likely to attempt suicide, experience suicidal thoughts, or engage in self-harm than their non-LGBTQ2 peers. Between 38 and 65% of transgender individuals experience suicidal ideation.ii Often, culture is prevention in AI/AN communities. Some examples of the healing work being revived in the Two Spirit community include dance lessons, Two Spirit gatherings and powwows, Two Spirit drum groups, and restoring ceremonies such as the Naming Ceremony and Sun Dance.iii This document provides a list of resources for Native Connections grantees and stakeholders to reference to support Two Spirit populations in suicide prevention efforts.
