District Mayors Inauguration

Mayors within the Waterberg District Municipality were sworn in at Mahwelereng Stadium in on Saturday the 15th of October. The event was attended by MEC of CoGHSTA Makoma Makhurupetje and Health MEC Poppy Ramathuba, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Buti Manamela, Speakers, Mayors, Members of Provincial Legislature, Chief Whips and Councillors of all five municipalities in the District and Chairperson of the Local House of Traditional Affairs, Kgoshigadi Resetja Taueatsoala.

Community members and delegates witnessed the swearing in ceremony, conducted by the Judicial Head, Magistrate Mashapu who requested the mayors to assert that they will serve with integrity and fairness.

Outlining the purpose of the event on behalf of Lephalale Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Moloko Jack Maeko, Chief Whip Cllr Alpheos Thulare, said that as mayors of the district and local municipalities, they are humbled by the trust that the community have given them and that they are making a commitment to serve with dedication, integrity and commitment. “We are also here to remind you that we as Mayors cannot develop Waterberg alone, we need co-operative and active participation to move Waterberg forward” he said.

Delivering her key note of address, MEC for CoGHSTA, Makoma Makurupetje said that the reason people went out to vote on the 3rd August was because they wanted to establish a government of the people by the people. She also added that they expect the elected Mayors to serve all the people irrespective of political parties they voted for. “I believe this is the beginning of a new era in which service delivery will reign supreme. I do not expect you to start from scratch as a lot has already been done and achieved by your predecessors. Yours is to build on the existing foundation and to make improvements. Where mistakes have been committed I expect you to make corrections and changes” she said.

She also send out a stem warning to the chosen councillors that should they not address the expectations which are entailed in the Back to Basics programme of local government, they would be failing in their term.

While giving his acceptance remarks Waterberg District Executive Mayor, Cllr Morris. Mataboge highlighted that focus should be on sustainable resource use, strengthening competitiveness, strengthening developmental governance, establishing long term fiscal strength, connecting working and living space and responsive and active citizenry.

“I am confident that we will be up to the task and that we will not disappoint the trust placed in us by the people of Waterberg. The time has come for Councils, Mayoral Committees, Executive Committees and each and every employee within the district, to double their efforts and roll up their sleeves in dedicating themselves to the task at hand” he said.
