Collieries and Early Railways in the North East: Guide to Primary Research Sources (To C.1830) RAILWAY AND CANAL HISTORICAL SOCIETY TRAMROAD GROUP Occasional Paper 146 Collieries and early railways in the North East: guide to primary research sources (to c.1830) Grahame Boyes In his Early Wooden Railways (1970), M. J. T. Lewis has provided a coherent account of the wooden waggonway era in the North East and established its position within the overall history of early railway development. For the group of waggonways feeding the staiths along the south side of the Tyne, Lewis has been supplemented by A Fighting Trade: rail transport in Tyne coal 1600-1800 (1990) by G. Bennett, E. Clavering and A. Rounding, which provides much more detail about the individual waggonways, as well as setting them in the context of the politics of the northeast coal trade. But further research remains to be done on the other wooden waggonways and, more particularly, on the important, but neglected, subject of the region's early iron railways which led to the promotion of the Stockton & Darlington Railway and thence to the modern railway era. John Buddle is emerging as a figure of immense influence during the formative years of the locomotive-worked edge-railway; he deserves a full-length biography based on the considerable volume of his reports and papers that have survived. The purpose of the following summary of sources is to encourage such research by demonstrating the considerable range of potential sources. However, it is based largely on a quick search of the National Register of Archives' lists and is certainly not to be regarded as comprehensive. Indeed other sources are referred to both by Lewis and by Bennett, Clavering & Rounding. As the history of the waggonways is inseparable from that of the collieries, they served, this survey covers records of the coal trade generally, not just those that specifically mention waggonways in the handlists. My thanks to the staff of the National Register of Archives, Miss Jennifer Gill (Durham County Record Office), Ms Elizabeth A. Rees (Tyne & Wear Archives Service), and Mrs Sue Wood (Northumberland Record Office) for their helpful advice. Mr Buddle, Though I have not had the pleasure of knowing you personally yet the honourable testimony borne to your Character by Messrs Pearson & Mowbray, and others on whose judgment I can rely, has induced me to recommend you to the Bishop of Durham as a fit person to be occasionally employed in viewing his Collieries and making the necessary inquiries into the value and other circumstances respecting the same and as that of Lanchester, now in Lease to the Earl of Sefton, lies in your Neighbourhood, I beg leave to trouble you to inspect the same and to obtain every information you can of the present annual profits accruing therefrom and when you have done so I shall be glad to see you at this place, or to be favoured with your Sentiments upon the subject; in the mean time, I am, Mr Buddle, Your very obed. hble. Servt. Willm. Emm Auckland Castle Octor. 14th 1792 In Consequence of the above Request I viewed the Huttons Seam Workings in the Bogg and Machine Pits at Lanchester Common, where, although the Bords were driven with the utmost Regularity, at the Width of 4 yards, yet, as in the Bogg Pit the Winnings were only 9 Yards, and in the Machine Pit only 8 ditto, I objected to that Mode of Working, on Account of the great Loss of Mine that would follow, as none of the Pillars, so left, could now be wrought to any Extent.

  • Northeast England – a History of Flash Flooding
Northeast England – A history of flash flooding Introduction The main outcome of this review is a description of the extent of flooding during the major flash floods that have occurred over the period from the mid seventeenth century mainly from intense rainfall (many major storms with high totals but prolonged rainfall or thaw of melting snow have been omitted). This is presented as a flood chronicle with a summary description of each event. Sources of Information Descriptive information is contained in newspaper reports, diaries and further back in time, from Quarter Sessions bridge accounts and ecclesiastical records. The initial source for this study has been from Land of Singing Waters –Rivers and Great floods of Northumbria by the author of this chronology. This is supplemented by material from a card index set up during the research for Land of Singing Waters but which was not used in the book. The information in this book has in turn been taken from a variety of sources including newspaper accounts. A further search through newspaper records has been carried out using the British Newspaper Archive. This is a searchable archive with respect to key words where all occurrences of these words can be viewed. The search can be restricted by newspaper, by county, by region or for the whole of the UK. The search can also be restricted by decade, year and month. The full newspaper archive for northeast England has been searched year by year for occurrences of the words ‘flood’ and ‘thunder’. It was considered that occurrences of these words would identify any floods which might result from heavy rainfall.

I came across the typescript for this history among my father's papers shortly after he died in 1991. It appears to have been written initially around 1978 and then rewritten and rearranged several times before being abandoned. As a result, I had quite a confusing collection of papers. Some chapters existed in several quite different versions without any indication as to which was the latest one. There were also apparent gaps where a page didn't logically follow from any other extant page or didn't have an obvious successor.
