DOG VS. CAT MAY 4, 2020 ISSUE #7, page 5 CATCHING UP WITH PIPPA Submitted by Aine Watson

Pippa was walking along the yard looking at the beautiful painted leaves of fall and wondering what it would be like if people saw her with tie-dyed ears. So she went in the house, grabbed some paint, mixed the colors together, and dipped her ears into an enormous bowl of paint. Pippa slipped into the bowl. Oops! She thought this bowl might be a bit too big! She got out of the bowl and she said, “Oh look at me! I’m tie- dyed!” Pippa tried to shake the colors off but it didn’t work. Then she went into her crate. But her owner grabbed her and said, “This isn’t our dachshund! It’s tie-dyed!” So they kicked Pippa out of the house and Pippa roamed around the streets. It rained. It poured. Pippa’s tie- dye washed off. Hours later, Pippa was walking around and thought wow this house sure looks familiar. Then suddenly something warm and cozy wrapped around her and Pippa was snuggled tight by her owner. “There you are!” her owner cried. “We’ve missed you!” To find out more about life with Pippa, tune into next week’s paper!

MY CAT MORTIMUS WESELTON JONES CULVER III: MORT AND THE KITTEN PART 2 Submitted by Edie Culver Mort had just told Lilia that she was so cute and tiny and sleepy that he was going to keep her and name her Lilia after his two favorite cats, Lily, and Leia his older and younger sisters. Lilia was very happy to hear that she would be staying with the knight, because she had never been loved or even met her parents. Mort was very good at caring for the little kitten and always loved her but when she was six months old he was needed in a far kingdom called Angdorien to defeat the evil dragon that was burning down the kingdom’s houses. Once the dragon was destroyed, Mort would be the greatest of all the knights on End Earth (End Earth is the world that they live on). Mort said goodbye to Lilia and she asked why he had to go but he gave no answer. Later that evening Lilia got worried that Mort would never return and that she had been left alone again. So, Lilia got ready to find Mort! Tails of Mort will be continued in the next issue . . . stay tuned! Suddenly Mary felt an icy cold hand on her shoulder. She gasped and turned around. As she moved closer to the icy hand, she could feel a waft of air as cold as a snowstorm. Mary bravely asked, “Who’s there?” Suddenly a bright light shot from the ceiling! As Mary’s eyes adjusted, she tried to focus on the thing that had touched her a few seconds ago. It was Hazel! “How did you get here?” Mary asked. “Were you following me?” “No,” Hazel answered. “I was just trying to get to the kitchen for you must be hungry from your long trip. I didn’t mean to startle you.” “Do you mean to tell me there’s more secret passageways in this house?” Mary asked. “Yes and no.” said Hazel. “Yes, these are secret passageways now but they used to be servants corridors if you know what I mean. Feel free to explore them on your own. There’s nothing dangerous about them. If you’ll excuse me, I’ll be on my way.” Mary flattened her back against the wall so that Hazel could pass. Then Mary left the strange room and started to explore the house. After finding her room, her father’s room, and Hazel’s room, she turned to the next room. But for some reason the room was locked. Mary went to find the kitchen. She found Hazel making a sandwich. “Hazel,” Mary said. “I have a question.” “Oh, sorry,” said Hazel. “I didn’t see you there. What did you need?” “I have a question,” said Mary. “About what?’ asked Hazel. “While I was exploring the house, I found a room that was locked,” said Mary. Hazel passed her a key. “This will open the door. Be careful it’s a bit of a clutter,” said Hazel. “Thank you,” said Mary, as she left the kitchen and headed back to the locked room. As Mary turned the key, the door swung open all on its own. Mary stared into the room. It was definitely cluttered. As she looked around something caught her eye. It was a box of scrolls. She pulled one out. It was a map of the house but not just any map. It had all of the passageways on it. Mary placed it back in the box and pulled out another scroll. This one had something she could not read. It was in some kind of foreign language. She wondered if her father could read it. He had taught kids foreign languages at a school before he started working at the furniture making shop. Mary put the scroll back in the box and picked up the box very carefully. She went to find her father. He was in the sitting room. Mary put down the box and handed her father the scroll. “Do you think you can read this, Father?” Mary asked. “No,” her father answered. “Maybe Hazel knows how to read it.” Mary went back to the kitchen with the box of scrolls tucked inside. In the kitchen she pulled out the scroll and handed it to Hazel. “Can you read this,” Mary asked. “Well I guess some secrets can’t be hidden forever,” Hazel said with a sparkle in her eye. Tune in next week for another chapter of Mary’s story.

William Shakespeare is a famed English poet and playwright. He was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon- Avon, England. When he was 18, he married Anne Hathaway and had three children. There is a period in his life, from 1585-1592, when he was not seen for seven years. In 1592 he popped up living in London. He died in his hometown on April 23,1616.
