Sushko Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection, Vitebsk State University P. M. Masherov, Moskovski Ave. 33, 21008 Vitebsk, Belarus. E-mail: [email protected] Keywords: Belarus, Carabidae, diversity, environmental factors, Sphagnum dwellers. Abstract. A key structural component in peat bog formation is Sphagnum spp., which determines very specific associated envi- ronmental conditions. The aim of this study was to characterise some of the key factors affecting the diversity, species richness and abundance of sphagnum inhabiting ground beetles and to examine the maintenance of stable populations of cold adapted specialised peat bog species. A total of 52 carabid species were recorded by pitfall traps along six main habitats, such as the lagg zone, pine bog, hollows, hummock open bog and dome. The results are characterised by a low diversity, which vary significantly among habitat types, and include a high abundance of a few carabid species. Among the variables influencing carabid species richness and abundance were plant cover, pH and the conductivity of the Sphagnum mat water. Vascular plant cover was a key factor shaping carabid beetle assemblages in the slope and the dome, while electric conductivity affected carabid beetle assem- blage in the lagg. Whereas, the water level was the most important factor for the hollows. At the same time, peat bog specialists showed low sensitivity to the gradient of the analysed variables.

  • 10 Anni Di Ricerche Entomologiche in Giardino (Insecta)
Quaderno di Studi e Notizie di Storia Naturale della Romagna Quad. Studi Nat. Romagna, 51: 95-125 (giugno 2020) ISSN 1123-6787 Ilvio Bendazzi 10 anni di ricerche entomologiche in giardino (Insecta) Abstract [Ten years of entomological research in a garden] A list of the insects found in a home-garden during ten years. The garden, of about 850 sq meters, including also a small pond, is close to a house on the outskirts of a village in Romagna lowland. Despite several negative factors due to the human presence, the biodiversity is surprisingly rich. The list includes 566 species of insects, 262 belonging to the Order Lepidoptera, 187 to Coleoptera and 117 to other Orders. These species only represent material identified at least at Genus level, but the collected material includes also many insects not identified at such level, that do not appear on the list. Furthermore many species probably escaped the research because they were neither manually collected nor attracted by light-traps. So it is deemed that the actual over-all insect biodiversity of the garden includes at least some hundreds more additional species. No previous records from Romagna were known of the tortricid Cochylis millierana Peyerimhoff = sannitica Trematerra, and the zopherid Synchita mediolanensis A. & G.B. Villa . The caddis-fly Hydropsyche guttata Pictet is recorded for the first time south of the Po river. The dermestid beetle Paranovelsis aequalis Sharp is new to Italy. Key words: Insecta, garden, checklist, Romagna, Italy.

  • Fauna Coleoptera Des Kreises Altenburg“ Vorgelegt Werden

Dissertation Advisor: Professor Donald H. Pfister Danny Haelewaters STUDIES OF THE LABOULBENIOMYCETES: DIVERSITY, EVOLUTION, AND PATTERNS OF SPECIATION ABSTRACT CHAPTER 1: Laboulbeniales is one of the most morphologically and ecologically distinct orders of Ascomycota. These microscopic fungi are characterized by an ectoparasitic lifestyle on arthropods, determinate growth, lack of asexual state, high species richness and intractability to culture. DNA extraction and PCR amplification have proven difficult for multiple reasons. DNA isolation techniques and commercially available kits are tested enabling efficient and rapid genetic analysis of Laboulbeniales fungi. Success rates for the different techniques on different taxa are presented and discussed in the light of difficulties with micromanipulation, preservation techniques and negative results. CHAPTER 2: The class Laboulbeniomycetes comprises biotrophic parasites associated with arthropods and fungi.

  • WENTLOOGE LEVEL INVERTEBRATE SURVEY, 2019 David Boyce
WENTLOOGE LEVEL INVERTEBRATE SURVEY, 2019 David Boyce DC Boyce Ecologist October 2019 1. INTRODUCTION This report details the findings of an invertebrate survey carried out under contract to Green Ecology. The survey aims to assess the importance for invertebrates of the area of Wentlooge Level shown on Figure 2.1 below. The site is in Wales, on the Gwent Levels; an extensive area of grazing marsh on the north-western side of the Bristol Channel. Wentlooge Level lies in the western part of this area, between the cities of Cardiff to the west and Newport to the east. A central grid reference for the site approximates to ST276817. The grazing marsh ditches of the Gwent Levels support a nationally important assemblage of aquatic plants and invertebrates. It also has one of the last remaining UK populations of the threatened shrill carder bumblebee Bombus sylvarum. For these reasons, much of the area is notified as a series of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The whole of the Wentlooge Level site lies within the Gwent Levels – St. Brides SSSI. Both the shrill carder bumblebee and the brown-banded carder bumblebee Bombus humilis, which also has a strong population on the Gwent Levels, are additionally listed in Section 7 of the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 as Species of Principal Importance for the conservation of biodiversity in Wales. 2. METHODS The first phase of survey work was undertaken in two blocks of two days, the first session being carried out on the 1st and 2nd of May 2019 and the second on the 22nd and 23rd May.
