VOLUME 14, NUMBER 1, JANUARY 1st, 2006 Four Schools Participated in Jr. Junkanoo Abaco Central Won First Place
By Mirella Santillo By late afternoon on December 17 Dove Plaza was bustling with the activity of the four Junior Junkanoo groups preparing for the evening parade. Make up was being applied, final touches were being added to the costumes and butterfly wings were flut- tering next to the Abaco Central High school’s container that had been hired to transport all the bulky costumes. Some chil- dren were putting on their costumes while others were already practicing with their drums or trumpets. At nightfall a fire was lit at the back of the parking lot to warm up the drums and then the participants were lin- ing up for the parade preceded by tall and brightly colored floats displaying the themes of their group. First to perform was Central Abaco Pri- mary presenting Wedding Time: Here Comes the Bride Sixth grader Wilkins Garcon, the groom, dressed in a tuxedo, and Trudy Dean, his fifth grade bride in a wedding dress, followed the banner representing a The banner of the Abaco Central High School was elaborate, colorful and brightly painted. The music and dancing were well done church, beautifully pasted and decorated and earned the school first place in the Junior Junkanoo competition held in Marsh Harbour on December 17. Four schools participated with Green Turtle Cay winning second place followed by S.C. Bootle High School and Central Abaco Primary. Please see Junknaoo Page 4

Santa arrived in Cherokee on Christmas Eve in his sleigh but minus his reindeer. He always takes time to visit the children there each year. This was the 59th consecutive year for him to give every child a present from under the large Christmas tree in the Methodist Church yard. After he leaves, all guests are treated to a Christmas dinner, this year served in the W.W. Sands Community Center. See story on page 6.

The service included the congregation singing of well loved Christmas carols, Scripture readings and a short sermon by Mr. Mills. The service was appreciated because many of them had no way to get to one of the area churches. Page 2 The Abaconian January 1, 2006 Junior Junknaoo Took Much Preparation
