VOLUME 14, NUMBER 1, JANUARY 1st, 2006 Four Schools Participated in Jr. Abaco Central Won First Place

By Mirella Santillo By late afternoon on 17 Dove Plaza was bustling with the activity of the four Junior Junkanoo groups preparing for the evening . Make up was being applied, final touches were being added to the costumes and butterfly wings were flut- tering next to the Abaco Central High school’s container that had been hired to transport all the bulky costumes. Some chil- dren were putting on their costumes while others were already practicing with their drums or trumpets. At nightfall a fire was lit at the back of the parking lot to warm up the drums and then the participants were lin- ing up for the parade preceded by tall and brightly colored floats displaying the themes of their group. More than 200 children from two primary schools and two high schools paraded in the evening in front of a very large crowd of spectators packed on each side of Don MacKay Boulevard. First to perform was Central Abaco Pri- mary presenting Wedding Time: Here Comes the Bride Sixth grader Wilkins Garcon, the groom, dressed in a tuxedo, and Trudy Dean, his fifth grade bride in a wedding dress, followed the banner representing a The banner of the Abaco Central High School was elaborate, colorful and brightly painted. The music and dancing were well done church, beautifully pasted and decorated and earned the school first place in the Junior Junkanoo competition held in Marsh Harbour on December 17. Four schools participated with Green Turtle Cay winning second place followed by S.C. Bootle High School and Central Abaco Primary. Please see Junknaoo Page 4

Santa arrived in Cherokee on Christmas Eve in his sleigh but minus his reindeer. He always takes time to visit the children there each year. This was the 59th consecutive year for him to give every child a present from under the large Christmas tree in the Methodist Church yard. After he leaves, all guests are treated to a Christmas dinner, this year served in the W.W. Sands Community Center. See story on page 6.

The service included the congregation singing of well loved Christmas carols, Scripture readings and a short sermon by Mr. Mills. The service was appreciated because many of them had no way to get to one of the area churches. Page 2 The Abaconian January 1, 2006 Junior Junknaoo Took Much Preparation

VOLUME 14, NUMBER 1, JANUARY 1st, 2006 Christmas Play Brings Season’s Joy Its Annual Production Is Always a Highlight of the Year By Lindsey Delaplaine Once again St. James Methodist Church put on a wonderful Christmas play that was enjoyed by all who attended. Tickets for the play were highly sought after and the actors played to a packed church both evenings. The title of this year’s play was. The play’s action was concerned with a number of relevant themes to the holiday season, as the opening narrator, Laura Albury pointed out. One of the early songs, What Is Christ- mas Without Christ? asked audience goers about the importance of giving cards and gifts if, in the madness of making sure the cards were sent and the gifts were bought, the meaning of the holiday was forgotten. Herod, the original villain, was cleverly symbolized by Mr. Herod, acted by Dylan Thompson, the owner of Herod’s Depart- ment Store who has forgotten the meaning of Christmas and has to be reminded by his employee; Miss O’Reilly, acted by Tatum Thompson, the operator of the Lighthouse Mission; Miss Ellie, played by Shannon Thompson; her dog Buddy, played by Luke Albury; and the kids of the St. James Children’s Choir: Brittany Sweeting, Justine Russell, Samantha Williams, Dana Malone, The play Meet Me at the Manger: Wise Men Still Follow Him Today was presented by Hope Town residents on December 15 and Miquelle Trembley and Aisha Lebrun, led 16. The annual play performed each Christmas is so popular that tickets are required for entrance to St. James Methodist Church by head shepherd Erin Patterson. The where the play is presented. There is no charge for the tickets but contoll the number of people in the church. The production is the Children’s Choir even had its own Mary and effort of many - Bahamians, second-home owners and visitors - and is a very professional production with specially made costumes, Joseph: Kora Wilhoyte and Tristan Albury, hand painted backdrops, special lighting. The offering taken each night supports the church program for sending all children in Bahamian orphanages to summer camp for a week. Please see HT Play Page 2
