Netherlands the Netherlands Despite Being a Small Country, Lacking
Netherlands The Netherlands despite being a small country, lacking in natural resources, was able in the 17th Century to become the centre for European overseas trade, including the trade in human beings. This 'Dutch Miracle' was a product of numerous innovations in navigation, manufacturing and finance, which allowed for slaves and slave produce to be transported at greater capacity and at lower cost. The first recorded trader sold 20 Africans to the colony of Virginia in North America in 1619, but the Dutch trade only really took off in response to labour shortage in the newly conquered sugar plantations of Northern Brazil in 1630. Wars with Portugal (1620-1655) left the Dutch in control of many of the slave depots on the West African coast, centred on modern Ghana, which by 1650 had dispatched 30,000 slaves to Brazil alone. After the return of the Brazilian colonies to Portugal in 1654, the Dutch traders were able to draw upon their network of forts to supply other European powers, dominating the supply to Spain until the 1690s. However the near constant warfare the Netherlands were waged in with other European nations, such as Spain, France and Britain, by Imperial Spain, did eventually sap its strength, and Dutch involvement in the trade declined in the 18th Century, and effectively ceased in 1795. When the final abolition of the trade and institution of slavery formally occurred in 1863, Dutch agents had brought 540,000 Africans to the Americas and cast the spectre of slavery east, from the Cape of Good Hope to the Indonesian archipelago. -

Alexander Gough, Lancaster University 21st September 2018 2 Abstract The past fifty years has seen a significant shift in the recognition of indigenous peoples within international law. Once conceptualised as the antithesis to European identity, which in turn facilitated colonial ambitions, the recognition of indigenous identity and responding to indigenous peoples’ demands is now a well-established norm within the international legal system. Furthermore, the recognition of this identity can lead to benefits, such as a stake in controlling valuable resources. However, gaining tangible indigenous recognition remains inherently complex. A key reason for this complexity is that gaining successful recognition as being indigenous is highly dependent upon specific regional, national and local circumstances. Belize is an example of a State whose colonial and post-colonial geographies continue to collide, most notably in its southernmost Toledo district. Aside from remaining the subject of a continued territorial claim from the Republic of Guatemala, in recent years Toledo has also been the battleground for the globally renowned indigenous Maya land rights case. -

(Oxford, England; Santa Barbara, California; Denver, Colorado) Abstract: Antigua and Barbuda, two islands of Leeward Island group in the eastern Caribbean, together make up a single independent state. The union is an uneasy one, for their relationship has always been ambiguous and their differences in history and economy greater than their similarities. Barbuda was forced unwillingly into the union and it is fair to say that Barbudan fears of subordination and exploitation under an Antiguan central government have been realized. Barbuda is a flat, dry limestone island. Its economy was never dominated by plantation agriculture. Instead, its inhabitants raised food and livestock for their own use and for provisioning the Antigua plantations of the island's lessees, the Codrington family. After the end of slavery, Barbudans resisted attempts to introduce commercial agriculture and stock-rearing on the island. They maintained a subsistence and small cash economy based on shifting cultivation, fishing, livestock, and charcoal-making, and carried it out under a commons system that gave equal rights to land to all Barbudans. Antigua, by contrast, was dominated by a sugar plantation economy that persisted after slave emancipation into the twentieth century. Its economy and goals are now shaped by the kind of high-impact tourism development that includes gambling casinos and luxury hotels. The Antiguan government values Barbuda primarily for its sparsely populated lands and comparatively empty beaches. This bibliography is the only comprehensive reference book available for locating information about Antigua and Barbuda. -

International flights are not included in the participation fee Maranatha in Dominica Maranatha’s first project in Dominica was in 1979, when volunteers assisted with the construction of a Seventh-day Adventist secondary school in the city of Portsmouth. Maranatha’s major effort didn’t take place until the 1980s, after Hurricane David slammed into the island and destroyed many of its structures. In response, Maranatha began working on the island to help rebuild homes, churches, and schools. It was an effort that lasted into the 1990s. On the night of September 18, 2017, Hurricane Maria, a category 5 hurricane, plowed into Dominica. Rain and winds of more than 200 mph tore through the country. The storm lasted for hours, and in the morning, Dominicans woke to a scene of utter devastation. The once lush tropical island was stripped of leaves, trees, and vegetation. More than two dozen people lost their lives. Thousands of homes were impacted. Out of 34 Adventist churches on the island, 28 were damaged Project Schedule or destroyed. In late 2017, the Adventist Church in Dominica contacted Maranatha to request assistance in rebuilding their Wednesday, February 20 churches, and Maranatha began responding to their request in Arrival in Dominica May, 2018. Estou a ver-me sentado debaixo do canhoeiro, a ouvir … Essas histórias estavam ligadas à mitologia ronga, a fabulas, e eram encaradas como um contributo para a nossa formação moral.” Malangatana Valente Ngwenya3 Introduction In Africa, keeping oral traditions alive is a way of transmitting history and culture and of preserving individual and collective memories, as well as a matter of survival for the individual and the society in which he lives, for it allows the knowledge and experiences of the older generations to be transmitted to the younger ones. Considered in their historical dimension, oral traditional genres which relate past events and have been passed down through time cannot be dismissed simply as “myth,” as they are effectively the source for the construction of African history and are as reliable as other non-oral ways of recording and passing on experiences. For Amadou Hampaté Bâ “tradition transmitted orally is so precise and so rigorous that one can, with various kinds of cross checking, reconstruct the great events of centuries past in the minutest detail, especially the lives of the great empires or the great men who distinguish history”. During my stay in Dominica, I had the opportunity to organize a teachers’ workshop with the assistance of the indigenous people of the Kalinago Territory. Although the teachers interact with Kalinago culture on a daily basis, we decided to explore the teachers’ knowledge of indigenous heritage and to challenge them in activities where they could put their knowledge into practice. We then drew animals, plants, tools and objects that are found in daily life in the Kalinago Territory. Later on in the workshop, we asked teachers about the Kalinago names that were printed on their tag names. Teachers were able to recognize some of these Kalinago names, and sometimes even the stories behind them. In this simple way, we started our workshop on indigenous history and heritage — because sometimes the most useful and meaningful learning resources are the ones we can find in our everyday life. This case study took place in Dominica; the island is also known by its Kalinago name, Wai’tu Kubuli, which means “tall is her body.” The Kalinago Territory is the home of the Kalinago people. -
