It has created “Ningguo Miracle” since 1990s. Its general economic capacity has been ranked #1 (the first) among all the counties or cities in Anhui Province since 2000. In order to analyze the influencing factors of competitive advantages of Ningguo City and explain “Ningguo Miracle”, this article have evaluated, analyzed and classified the general economic competitiveness of 61 counties (cities) in Anhui Province in 2004, by 14 indexes of evaluation index system. The result showed that compared with other counties (cities) in Anhui Province, Ningguo City has more advantages in competition. The competitive advantage of Ningguo City is due to the productivities, the effect of the second industry and industry, and the investment of fixed assets. Then the influencing factors of Ningguo’s competitiveness in terms of productivity were analyzed with authoritative data since 1990 and a log linear regression model was established by stepwise regression method. Drennan, PhD, Distinguished Professor, Department of Anthropology ii Copyright © by Wenjing Wang 2017 iii LINGJIATAN SOCIAL ORGANIZATION IN THE YUXI VALLEY, CHINA: A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE Wenjing Wang, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2017 The Lingjiatan site with a plethora of exquisite jades and public works in the Yuxi River valley of Anhui, China has been suggested as a ritual and ceremonial center of the middle Neolithic (c. 7000-5000 BP) Chaohu region. Based on an extremely fine-grained regional-scale complete- coverage survey covering an area of 400 km2 revolving around the Lingjiatan site, this dissertation documents patterns of social organization in this region from the middle Neolithic to historical Zhou (c. 5700-2500 BP). More specifically, this research reconstructs the trajectory of social changes and the nature and population of communities at local and supra-local scales, and examines the social differentiation in the Lingjiatan households and communities. Building on these analyses, this dissertation research also compares Lingjiatan with Hongshan society, another visible example of “jade culture” in middle Neolithic China, to explore the factors leading to variations or similarities of the trajectories and activities in the formation of larger-scale and more complex societies.

  • Regional Industrial Development in China Along the Yangtze And
Regional industrial development in China along the Yangtze and Zhujiang rivers, ca. 1915-2004 Yi Xu 1, 2, Bas van Leeuwen 2,3, Lin Wang1, Zhihua Tang1 1 Guangxi Normal University, Guilin, China 2 Utrecht University, Utrecht, the Netherlands 3 International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam, the Netherlands Abstract The Chinese economy has grown spectacularly since the early 20th century. Partly this is due to the great transformation that made China (one of) the biggest manufacturing economies in the world. The shifts in industries from the predominantly Western world to China is a hotly debated topic. Yet, both this intern development in China, nor the shifts from the Western economies to China did not occur at random. Rather, industries in China are highly localized in certain regions. This paper is a first attempt to analyze shifts in regional industrialization in China over the 20th and 21st centuries. By combining a large list of both published and unpublished sources, we construct current price output data by province and prefecture for 5 benchmark years (1915, 1933, 1954, 1963, 1988, and 2004) for 5 provinces (Guangdong, Guangxi, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Anhui). We find that, after an initial clustering in the port cities, industry slowly expanded Westwards via main rivers and railroads. 1.Introduction Industrialization has been a hotly debated topic in the field of world economic history field ever since the industrial revolution occurred in Britain in the 18th centur. Even though initially focused on national development, regional industrialization patterns receive increasing attention. Also given its recent rise in industrial development, it is therefore remarkable that Chinese regional industrialization has not attracted a comparable amount of attention.

Since it was launched in October 2011, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) Satellite has become a new satellite used to monitor nighttime light. This study performed the first evaluation on the NPP-VIIRS nighttime light imagery in modeling economy, analyzing 31 provincial regions and 393 county regions in China. For each region, the total nighttime light (TNL) and gross regional product (GRP) around the year of 2010 were derived, and a linear regression model was applied on the data.
