Local fan favourites Johnny Reid (March 1) and Colin James (March 20) will perform to sold-out crowds. And Contemporary Folk Music Artist of the Year (2017) Stephen Fearing (Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) will return by popular demand with his trio. We are excited to present an evening of Canadian folk music fi ddlers in a double-bill with April Verch joined by Jason and Pharis, and opening with Vancouver Island’s Annie Lou. The Arts Club Theatre’s production of the smash hit Onegin will be here on February 15 for one night only. This award winning show (10 Jessie theatre awards) has sold out across the country and is already a hot ticket in town. Our dance series will feature two of Canada’s top dance companies with Canada’s Ballet Jörgen performing the classical ballet Anastasia and, for the fi rst time here, contemporary dance troupe Toronto Dance Theatre in their 50th anniversary season featuring choreography by renowned Canadian Christopher House. With the largest stage on Vancouver Island, the theatre was designed to accommodate extravagant dance and theatre productions like these. Nowhere else on the Island will you see productions like this in their full splendour. In celebration of Pride Month this June, we will present two live performances in partnership with Intrepid Theatre’s OUTStages Festival (Victoria). The critically acclaimed, Jessie nominated theatre production, My Funny Valentine (June 22) is based on true events of the tragic murder of 15 year old Lawrence King. The Toronto-based Queer Songbook Orchestra (June 23) is a 12-piece, chamber pop ensemble that weaves together original compositions, personal narratives and the backstories behind 100 years of music. From page 19 onwards, you will see an eclectic line-up of performances from companies that have rented our theatre. We have strong relationships with business promoters and the local performing arts groups and want their shows to succeed. We have highlighted their show pages with a blue border to distinguish them from the productions that we have brought in as part of our 2018 spring season. One of six fiddlers who represented the Canadian fiddle tradition to the world at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, her ability to intertwine step dancing, fiddling and singing all at once with apparent ease and precision makes her one of the most esteemed fiddlers of her generation. Pharis & Jason Romero sing vibrant, blue-grass duets with lyrical harmony. These JUNO award-winners are passionate about all things folk performing memorable songs played on handmade banjos. This fi lm is at once a love letter to the life and career of Harry Dean Stanton and a meditation on self- exploration and human connection. MONDAY, MARCH 26 The Divine Order In 1971 Switzerland, despite the worldwide social upheavals of the previous decade, women are still denied the right to vote. When unassuming and dutiful housewife Nora is forbidden by her husband to take a part-time job, she becomes the unlikely poster child of the town women’s su ragette movement. MONDAY, APRIL 23 Lady Bird Lady Bird, as much a mother/daughter story as it is a coming of age tale, is set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape. It o ers an a ecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that defi ne us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home. TUESDAY, MAY 22 Faces Places 89-year old Agnes Varda, one of the leading fi gures of the French New Wave, and aclaimed 33 year-old French photographer and muralist, JR, team up to co-direct this enchanting documentary/road movie. Kindred spirits, Varda and JR travel around the villages in France in JR’s photo truck creating portraits of heartwarming encounters and forming an unlikely tender friendship along the way. MONDAY, JUNE 25 Finding Your Feet On the eve of her retirement, a snobbish, upper middle class woman leaves home after discovering her husband has been having an a air with her best friend. She moves in to live with her estranged Bohemian sister, experiencing teeming life on an impoverished council estate. Despite her ups and downs, she ultimately learns it’s never too late in life to begin again!
