LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY. Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil Elizabeth Bortolaia Silva Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD, Imperial College of Science and Technology University of London May 1988 LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil ABSTRACT This thesis looks at aspects of recent changes in international competition in the car industry. It examines the implications of the changes for the relationship between technology and work and it considers how strategies of multinational corporations interact with different national contexts. It is based on a case-study of the Ford Motor Company in its two largest factories in Britain and Brazil, Dagenham and São Bernardo. Chapter 1 describes existing theoretical approaches to comparative studies of technology and work, criticizes technological and cultural determinist approaches and argues for a method that draws on a 'historical regulation' approach. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 describe the long-term background and recent shifts in the pattern of international competition in the motor industry. In particular they look at important shifts in the late 1970s and 1980s and at Ford's changes in management structure and product strategy designed to meet these challenges. Chapter 5 considers recent debates on international productivity comparisons and presents a fieldwork-based comparison of the production process at Dagenham and São Bernardo. The description shows the importance of issues other than technology in determining the flexibility and quality of production. In different national contexts, 2 different mixes of technology and labour can produce comparable results. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 look at the national and local contexts of industrial relations in the two countries to throw light on the different patterns of change observed in the factories. -

AC 2011-1048: CONVERTING AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE VEHICLE TO AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE Ali Eydgahi, Eastern Michigan University Dr. Eydgahi is an Associate Dean of the College of Technology, Coordinator of PhD in Technology program, and Professor of Engineering Technology at the Eastern Michigan University. Since 1986 and prior to joining Eastern Michigan University, he has been with the State University of New York, Oak- land University, Wayne County Community College, Wayne State University, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Dr. Eydgahi has received a number of awards including the Dow outstanding Young Fac- ulty Award from American Society for Engineering Education in 1990, the Silver Medal for outstanding contribution from International Conference on Automation in 1995, UNESCO Short-term Fellowship in 1996, and three faculty merit awards from the State University of New York. He is a senior member of IEEE and SME, and a member of ASEE. He is currently serving as Secretary/Treasurer of the ECE Division of ASEE and has served as a regional and chapter chairman of ASEE, SME, and IEEE, as an ASEE Campus Representative, as a Faculty Advisor for National Society of Black Engineers Chapter, as a Counselor for IEEE Student Branch, and as a session chair and a member of scientific and international committees for many international conferences. Dr. Eydgahi has been an active reviewer for a number of IEEE and ASEE and other reputedly international journals and conferences. He has published more than hundred papers in refereed international and national journals and conference proceedings such as ASEE and IEEE. James Bond, the legendary British secret agent, will drive an Aston Martin again in the next 007 film it was announced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), Eon Productions, and Aston Martin. The 20th installment of the longest running and most successful franchise in cinema history, produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, is due for release in 2002. Bond 20 marks the 40th anniversary of the franchise that began in 1962 with Dr. No. Pierce Brosnan will make his fourth appearance as James Bond in the film, which will be directed by Lee Tamahori (Along Came a Spider, The Edge) and written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. Production will begin at Pinewood Studios in January 2002. The recently launched V12 Vanquish will be the fourth Aston Martin that Bond has driven. The association with the marque began in 1964 with the film Goldfinger when the DB5 was fitted with “optional extras” such as ejector seats and rockets. Producers Michael G. Certificate Plan of Study Anticipated Launch Autumn 2018 AUTO2360 Advanced Electrical Systems: Diagnosis and Repair This course continues the study of automotive electrical systems building on information and skills obtained in AUTO 1160 and AUTO 1260. Accessory system diagnosis, live-car servicing, supplemental restraints systems, and various body control computer systems will be emphasized. AUTO2380 Advanced Engine Performance: Diagnosis and Repair This course continues the study of automotive engine performance systems building on information and skills obtained in AUTO 1180 and AUTO 2280. System diagnosis, live-car servicing, and various manufacturer's computer control systems will also be explored through lecture and lab activities. AUTO 2190 Hybrid Vehicles: Theory and Operations This course presents the theory and operation of hybrid vehicles. This is an informative course designed to provide a general overview of various hybrid vehicle systems. Proper safety precautions and procedures needed to service the basic systems of hybrid vehicles will be discussed. AUTO 2390 Advanced Hybrid Vehicles: Diagnosis and Repair This course builds on the fundamentals covered in AUTO 2190 and continues the study of automotive engine performance and electrical systems. Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles will be emphasized. System safety, diagnosis, live car servicing, and various manufacturer’s systems will be explored through lecture and lab activities. An expected outcome of AUTO 2390 should be students are prepared to pass the ASE Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist Test (L3). AUTO 2391 Alternative Fueled Vehicles: Diagnosis and Repair Compressed natural gas (CNG), hydrogen fuel cell, propane, bi-fuel, liquefied natural gas, ethanol and biodiesel vehicles will be explored. -
