10 Syntactic Structure and Semantic Scope 10 Syntactic Structure and Semantic Scope 10.1 Object Quantifiers and Quantifier Raising 10.1.1 Object Quantifiers and Scope Ambiguity So far we were concerned with sentences that contain just one quantifier, a quantifier that also oc- curs in just one position, the subject position. But quantified NPs may occur in a variety of other positions, e.g. the object position, and we may have more than one quantified NP in one clause: (1) a. Some girl liked every book. b. No girl liked every book. A problem with the derivation of (1) is that we have analyzed quantifiers as being of type D(et)t, and transitive verbs as being of type Deet. Obviously, these two meanings don’t go together — we can- not use functional application here. Another issue that appears when we consider sentences with more than one quantifiers is that such sentences often are ambiguous. For example, (1.a) has one reading in which it is stated that there is some girl x such that x read every book, and another reading that says that for every book y it holds that some girl read y. The latter reading is perhaps not very prominent, but it clearly exists for examples like the following: (2) Some girl or other liked every book. When we translate (1.a) into predicate logic, we can express the two readings as follows: (3) a. $x[G(x) Ù " y[B(y) ® L(x, y)]] b. " y[B(y) ® $x[G(x) Ù L(x, y)]] That is, the subject quantifier can have scope over the object quantifier, or the object quantifier can have scope over the subject quantifier. Often the reading with the subject quantifier having wide scope (over the object quantifier) is more natural, but there are many cases in which only the other interpretation makes sense: (4) a. A nanny brought most kids to the kindergarten. b. An American flag stood in front of every building. c. A member of the Expose the Right group attended every public event held in Iowa or New Jersey. (The New Republic, Feb. 19, 1996). We find such scope ambiguities with other operators as well. The following sentence can either mean that nothing that glitters is gold (wide-scope interpretation of all), or that it is not the case that everything is gold (wide-scope interpretation of negation). Of course, the idiom wants to express the second reading. (5) All that glitters isn’t gold. a. " x[Gl(x) ® ØGo(x)] b. Ø" x[Gl(x) ® Go(x)] © Manfred Krifka, Institut für deutsche Sprache und Linguistik, HU Berlin, WS 2000/200 Object Quantifiers by Quantifier Raising 160 Let us see how we can deal with object quantifiers and how we can express such scope ambi- guities. 10.1.2 Object Quantifiers by Quantifier Raising In section (8) we were concerned with the phenomenon that a quantifier can bind a pronoun, and we have proposed to deal with this phenomenon by a movement operation for quantifiers. To be spe- cific, we have assumed the following rule: (6) If [S...a NP,i...] is a sentence that contains an NP a with index i, then we can form the structure [Sa NP l i[S...ei...]] as input for semantic interpretation. And we called the resulting structure Logical Form (LF) and distinguished it from Surface Structure (S-Structure). Notice that the raising rule (6) can be applied more than once if necessary. It does not say anything about the order in which different applications of the rule should be executed. Leopold read the letter, and Molly did, too. b. Leopold read the letter before Molly did. Now, consider the following case, which exhibits what is known as antecedent-contained deletion: (13)Leopold read [NP every letter [CP that Molly did]]. What is remarkable here is that VP ellipsis occurs inside the object NP, which is every letter that Molly did. It has to be spelled out, of course, as ‘every letter that Molly read’. But notice that there is no antecedent VP that just consists of the verb read here; what we have is an antecedent read every letter that Molly did. But this certainly is not the proper antecedent; if we spell out did in (13) by read every letter that Molly did we get before Molly read every letter that Molly did. This cannot be the right result, of course, not the least because it again contains a VP ellipsis. Scholars agree that, in general, an animate possessor predicts the s- genitive while an inanimate possessor predicts the of-construction. However, the current literature rarely discusses noun compounds, such as the table leg, which also express possessive relationships. However, pragmatically and syntactically, a compound cannot be considered as a true possessive construction. Thus, this paper will examine why some compounds still display possessive semantics epiphenomenally. The noun compounds that imply possession seem to exhibit relationships prototypical of inalienable possession such as body part, part whole, and spatial relationships. Additionally, the juxtaposition of the possessor and possessum in the compound construction is reminiscent of inalienable possession in other languages. Therefore, this paper proposes that inalienability, a phenomenon not thought to be relevant in English, actually imbues noun compounds whose components exhibit an inalienable relationship with possessive semantics.

We flesh out this idea in a grammar that compositionally derives the truth conditions of donkey sentences containing conditionals and relative clauses, including those involving modals and proportional quantifiers. For example, an indefinite in the antecedent of a conditional can bind a donkey pronoun in the consequent by taking scope over the entire conditional. Our grammar manages continuations using three independently motivated type-shifters, Lift, Lower, and Bind. Empirical support comes from donkey weak crossover (*He beats it if a farmer owns a donkey): in our system, a quantificational binder need not c-command a pronoun that it binds, but must be evaluated before it, so that donkey weak crossover is just a special case of weak crossover. We compare our approach to situation-based E-type pronoun analyses, as well as to dynamic accounts such as Dynamic Predicate Logic. A new ‘tower’ notation makes derivations considerably easier to follow and manipulate than some previous grammars based on continuations. Semanticists have generally been concerned with developing theories to capture the range of possible readings for such sentences. This is what Higgins & Sadock (2003) have dubbed the problem of scope generation.     C-Command vs. Scope: An Experimental Assessment of Bound Variable Pronouns Keir Moulton & Chung-hye Han Simon Fraser University To appear in Language Abstract While there are very clearly some structural constraints on pronoun interpretation, debate remains as to their extent and proper formulation (Bruening 2014). Since Reinhart 1976 it is commonly reported that bound variable pronouns are subject to a C-Command requirement. This claim is not universally agreed on and has been recently challenged by Barker 2012, who argues that bound pronouns must merely fall in the semantic scope of a binding quantifier. In the processing literature, recent results have been advanced in support of C-Command (Kush et al. 2015, Cunnings et al. 2015). However, none of these studies separates semantic scope from structural C-Command. In this article, we present two self-paced reading studies and one off-line judgment task which show that when we put both C-Commanding and non-Commanding quantifiers on equal footing in their ability to scope over a pronoun, we nonetheless find a processing difference between the two. Semantically legitimate, but non-C-Commanded bound variables do not behave like C-Commanded bound variables in their search for an antecedent. The results establish that C-Command, not scope alone, is relevant for the processing of bound variables. We then explore how these results, combined with other experimental findings, support a view in which the grammar distinguishes between C-Commanded and non-C-Commanded variable pronouns, the latter perhaps being disguised definite descriptions (Cooper 1979, Evan 1980, Heim 1990, Elbourne 2005).

This paper presents two new data points going against standard dynamic approaches to this ambiguity: first, I show that the ambiguity extends beyond quantified en- vironments, to cross-clausal anaphora. Second, I show that donkey sentences can give rise to narrow pseudo-scope readings, where the pronoun’s implicit quantifi- cation takes scope below some operator in the sentence. Neither of these facts is predicted by standard dynamic accounts. Together, they suggest a different analysis in which the ambiguity arises when the pronoun has multiple referents to pick from. Inspired by Champollion, Bumford & Henderson(2017), I propose that when such circumstances arise, the pronoun receives vague reference. Using standard rules of projection is then sufficient to derive the existential/universal ambiguity as well as the two problematic data points.
