Now under the direction of brothers Laurent and Christophe Pinson, a purer, more refined style is emerging...but without sacrificing any of the inherent richness that has always characterised Pinson wines. The main work is of course conducted in the vineyard, where old vines and controlled yields give grapes of superior quality. The expanded cellars allow careful vinification and ageing, with extended ageing on the lees and limited use of oak barrels for maturation. New oak however is not sought as a flavouring - none whatsoever for the1er Crus - and even the Grand Cru only sees 10% new wood. Laurent's daughter Charlene has recently joined the Domaine having studied oenology at wine school in Beaune. Fabien Duperray has a long association with top Burgundian Domaines, distributing the wines of DRC, Coche Dury and Arnaud Ente, amongst others. This has allowed Fabien to begin his own estate producing wines organically and biodynamically. From hand ploughing the vineyards to foot-treading the grapes, every aspect is practiced as naturally as possible. He uses the finest corks and bottles and hand dips each bottle in protective wax in a bid to make the most stable and well-preserved wine. The red wines are made with 100% whole bunch, receive no oak treatment and undergo 7 days maceration to avoid too much tannins. The white wines are all vinified in steel and glass tanks with the exception of two, Pouilly-Fuisse and Pouilly-Fuisse Vignes Blanches. These two whites are produced in a similar method to the wines of Domaine Coche-Dury. Fabien has made a name for himself as one to watch in Beaujolais, many consider him the biggest threat to the regions ‘Famous Five’ and that he is well on his way to achieving ‘Iconic & Cult’ Status. He identified ideal terroir for growing Chardonnay and in 1999 created a new winery, Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon. Each wine reflects a different expression of its soil, ranging from the easy-going Macon Villages via Macon Milly- Lamartine, Macon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette, Macon Uchizy en Maranches to the steely, mineral Macon Bussieres. From 2009 they have contracted to farm the vineyards of the Château de Vire with the appellation Vire-Clesse. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically with low yields and hand harvesting. Today these wines enjoy huge success around the world for great Burgundy at fair prices. • Montrachet Grand Cru 2009
Montrachet Grand Cru 2009 Region Côte de Beaune Appellation Montrachet Grand Cru Village Puligny-Montrachet Grape variety Chardonnay The Vine Vinification & Ageing Average vine age 40 years Fermentation Traditional in oak barrels with complete malolactic fermentation Soil Chalk, gravel, limestone Ageing Average yield 10 to 12 months ageing in oak barrels, 100% 35 hl/ha new Harvest Hand picked Barrels Louis Latour cooperage, french oak, medium toasted Description Le Montrachet Grand Cru covers only 8 hectares between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne- Montrachet. This particular area was known during the 13th century as 'Mont Rachas'.'La rache' in the Burgundian dialect is commonly known as ringworm, a skin disease that causes hair loss. This baldness gives its name to the bare and stony hillside, which grew only thorny bushes until vines were planted. The terroir of Montrachet is a notable exception because its brown soils, usually reserved for Pinot Noir, transform here the Chardonnay into one of the greatest white wines in the world. The east exposure captures sunlight later in the evening. These factors are critical to achieve optimal ripeness. Our grapes come from a parcel with an area of 0.80 hectares which extends from the top to the bottom of the slope in the central part of North Montrachet, situated on the Puligny-Montrachet side. Wine tasting Tasting Note Pale yellow, this Montrachet has a floral nose. Still discreet but complex, it hints at its great future to come. On tasting it yields more, it is generous and the oak is present but harmonious. Great structure in the mouth.

  • Domaine Taupenot Merme
DOMAINE TAUPENOT MERME Country: France Region: Burgundy Appellation(s): Bourgogne, Saint Romain, Auxey Duresses, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle Musigny, Gevrey- Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Corton Rognet Grand Cru, Charmes- Chambertin Grand Cru, Mazoyères- Chambertin Grand Cru, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru Producer: Romain Taupenot Founded: 1963 Annual Production: 7,000 cases Farming: Organic (Practicing) Romain Taupenot is the ninth generation to run this family domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis. While records show his ancestors practiced viticulture as far back as the 17th century, the domaine as we know it today truly came to be after the marriage of Romain’s parents, Denise Merme and Jean Taupenot, in 1963. The domaine’s diverse vineyard sites across both the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune can be traced back to this union of holdings from the Taupenot family, based in Saint-Romain, with those belonging to the Mermes, from Morey-Saint-Denis. Romain recalls helping out at the domaine as a child, assisting with harvest and selling his grandfather’s wines along the side of the route nationale to vacationers passing through Burgundy on their summer journey south. But his total integration into the family business would come much later, as he first pursued a career in finance following business studies in Paris. In 1998, he returned home to assume management of the domaine, which he now runs alongside his sister, Virginie. With 9 hectares in the Côte de Nuits and another 4.5 hectares in the Côte de Beaune, Romain and Virginie now produce nineteen different wines across seventeen appellations.

  • Le Montrachet Amiot Tech Sheet
DOMAINE GUY AMIOT ET FILS LE MONTRACHET GRAND CRU The Domaine Amiot was founded in Chas- sagne-Montrachet in 1920 by Arsene Amiot when he acquired select parcels of vines or “climats” in Chassagne including Vergers, Caillerets, Clos St. Jean and in what is today Le Montrachet. Under Aresene, Domaine Amiot became one of the first domaines in Burgundy to bottle their own production. In the 1930’s the domaine passed to Aresene’s son, Pierre, who continued to add top sites such as Champsgains, Macherelles, Maltroie and their tiny parcel in Puligny, Les Demoiselles. Pierre’s son, Guy, took the reins in 1985 and solidified the reputa- tion of the domaine for producing wines of exceptional quality from an impressive array of top vineyard sites. Guy’s son Thierry took over the winemaking in 2003 and continues the tradi- tion of expressing the unique character of each vineyard site while constantly seeking to improve the quality of the wines. Region: Burgundy Appellation: Le Montrachet Grand Cru Owner: Thierry Amiot Established: 1920 Farming Practices: Sustainable Soil: Active limestone, with exposed bedrock Grape Varieties: 100% Chardonnay Vineyard: 8.56 ares Age of Vines: 97 years old Yield: 25-30 hl/ha Avg. After 12 months, all barrels are assembled in tank, allowed to integrate for 6 months, then bottled. Le Monrachet: Made of two micro-plots totalizing only 2 8.56 ares of vineyards, these tiny parcels of Le Montrachet are a gift of Nature.

  • Puligny-Montrachet
Puligny-Montrachet APPELLATION D’ORIGINE CONTRÔLÉE Appellation Village of the Côte de Beaune region (Côte-d’Or). This appellation includes 17 Premiers Crus Climats. The commune of Puligny-Montrachet also produces 5 Grands Crus (see Appellation sheets No. 52). Red wines from the defined area of this appellation may use the alternative appellation CÔTE DE BEAUNE-VILLAGES. Producing commune: Puligny-Montrachet. The appellation PULIGNY-MONTRACHET and PULIGNY-MONTRACHET PREMIER CRU may be followed by the name of the Climat of origin. TASTING NOTES White: this wine is a bright gold colour with greenish highlights, becoming more intense with age. The bouquet brings together hawthorn blossoms, ripe grapes, marzipan, hazelnut, amber, lemon-grass and green apple. Milky (butter, hot croissant) and mineral aromas (flint) are commonplace, as is honey. Body and bouquet blend into a subtle harmony. This wine combines grace with a welldefined character and a remarkable concentration. Red: the red wine is bright ruby when young, darkening with age. Its bouquet is divided between small red fruits (raspberry gooseberry) and black fruits (blackcurrant blackberry) later shifting towards leather, musk and fur. Tender and well-fruited, it is well put-together and does well with several years’ aging. SERVING SUGGESTIONS White: Puligny-Montrachet and its Premiers Crus are concentrated and well-bred. Their balance, aromatic complexity, and purified style demand delicate but rich food. They are equally at home with poultry in sauce or veal fried with mushrooms. Their great distinction elicits a grateful response from foie gras, lobster, crawfish, and grilled or fried sea-fish. On the cheese-board, its natural allies are goat cheeses, Reblochon, or soft-centred cheeses like Brie de Meaux.

  • Burgundy 2019 En Primeur
BURGUNDY 2019 EN PRIMEUR 2019 EN PRIMEUR WINE Burgundy 2019 November 2020 was to be my 30th annual visit to Burgundy. Since 1990, the first week in November has always been the top of the list for diary entries at the beginning of each year. Not so this year! Sadly, it has not been possible. As with the Bordeaux 2019 vintage tastings back in April, our Burgundian growers have had to take the unusual step of sending barrel samples for us to taste here in the UK, as opposed to our annual stomp around the cellars in the region itself. It’s not the same! That said, there is a serious job in hand, and arguably the cold and rainy weather here in the East Riding of Yorkshire simply reinforces our objectivity. We have had plenty of correspondence, phone calls and reports from our growers, keeping us informed about the 2019 vintage, their thoughts and expectations. So, along with our own experience from the samples we have tasted, what can we say about the 2019 vintage? First of all, yields were very low and there isn’t very much to go round. This is in complete contrast to the very plentiful 2018 vintage, which also delivered some superb wines. The quality of wines produced at the top domaines is excellent, both white and red, and so we expect the wines to be highly sought after. Demand for Burgundy seems to be insatiable. It is unlike any other wine producing region. Each domaine may own small holdings in a number of villages, but often they only produce a few barrels of each wine.

The Burgundian "Climats" – celebrated names like Montrachet, Romanée-Conti, Chambertin, Les Cailles… and there are 1 247 of them in the area – are parcels of vines, often rather small tracts of land, with precisely determined boundaries.
