Soundtrack CD available through Universal Music Australia Lyrics:

Pre-credits song:

Lash’s Take Me Away runs under the opening ‘schoolies breaking up at school’ scenes. The song is cut, lyrics as heard in the film:

Yeah, yeah Get up, get out Move on, move on, There’s no doubt I’m all wrong & you’re right It’s all the same with you I’m too thin, too fat You ask why, so do I So do I, so do I, so do I Yeah On & on & on & on On & on & on & on On & on & on & on

Chorus: Don’t wanna grow up I wanna get out Hey take me away I wanna shout out Take me away Away away away away ...

The song fades out as the shirtless Pete discards his bicycle, and heads in to his old school room to see a quote on the blackboard: “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.” - Hamlet (1600)

After he rubs out the first half of the line, and contemplates it, music and head titles begin.

Head Titles song:

A shortened version of Spiderbait’s Outta My Head accompanies the head credits, beneath which is a montage of Gold Coast sights, building up to schoolies’ week. Lyrics as heard in the film: I should not be out tonight I should see the morning light I should know what's wrong or right I should be at home tonight But instead I'm goin' outta my head

I should not be out tonight I should be in bed by nine I should try to stay inside I should be at home tonight But instead I'm goin' outta my head Ooh yeah, I feel fine when I'm with you Ooh yeah, I feel fine when I'm with you ...

Extended instrumental, and then fade down as a couple of schoolies - Rodney and Brian - greet each other - “hey brother” - and exchange a fake ID card … The song keeps playing under, as the schoolies joke, score grog, race down the street, and almost get run over by a car. After a screeching of brakes, they shout at the driver, then head off to the same apartment block where Freda is pumping helium into balloons. Freda looks down at the boys arguing by the swimming pool, and then a phone call interrupts the music, and it disappears (coinciding with the director’s credit).

I should not be out tonight I should see the morning light I should know what's wrong or right I should be at home tonight I should not be out tonight I should be in bed by nine I should try to stay inside I should be at home tonight But instead I'm goin' outta my head But instead I'm goin' outta my head Ooh but I feel fine when I'm with Yeah I feel fine when I'm with Yeah I feel fine when I'm with Yeah I feel fine when I'm with you Tail Songs:

There are three songs which run over the tail scenes and then the tail credits:

Song 1:

Chemical Heart by Grinspoon. The original lyrics have a first verse, omitted in the film.

(When Look for a ride and you need to get high my friend Spend all your time just walkin around instead Like black rose there's somebody to hold for them For them)

The movie begins with the second verse, as Pete sits alone on the sitting beach, watches the rising sun, sees a sea-battered sand castle, and then runs into the surf in his clothes:

Let's Go outside have nothin’ to hide for free Can't seem to see the forest from the trees Grass is always greener but how do ya know we'll see We'll see... Can't get started ... chemical heart Every time I get started … (you) pull me apart Can't get started ... chemical heart Every time I get started … you pull me apart …

(Very short musical interlude as Pete plunges into the ocean)

Forgotten Maybe things are right on the other side undone Better off wishin’ for the stars to kill the sun Like black rose if nobody can hold no one No one ... Can't get started … chemical heart

(Pete is joined in the surf by Freda, and they frolic together) Every time I get started ...you pull me apart Can't get started … chemical heart Every time I get started you pull me apart …

Fade down, as we hear Freda, at first in voice over beach shots, an then with Freda and Pete sitting on the beach, talking:

Freda: “My mother’s gunna skin me alive …”(on camera)…”This is not how I expected the first day of the rest of my life to turn out.” Pete: “I know what you mean … I lost my deposit … my stuff …and by two best friends …” (he reaches into his pocket for a Burger Man bag) … Freda: “Oh … you too? (she giggles). That’s it, isn’t it? It’s all over … school …routine … friends…” Pete: “Yeah …yeah, I guess …” (With a provocative glance, Freda lies back down on the sand, Pete hesitates to join her) Freda: “So what about you? You got a place to stay?” Pete: “Ah, no …um, how about yourself?” Freda: “Nup” (she puts on her glasses and sits back up) “Maybe we could?” Pete (with a nervous smile): “What?” Freda: “I don’t know … be friends …” Pete (laughing): “You wanna be my friend?” (he laughs again, and then with a smile) “Okay! That would be good …” (They both smile, Pete stands up, getting sand on her) … “It would be an honour.”

(Instrumental music has already begun as she stands up alongside him, wipes a strand of hair from her forehead and says “My name’s Freda”)

(The first lines of the song begin under Pete saying “My name’s Pete”)

Song 2:

“On the Radio” by The Killjoys:

Remember the sky was it blue or grey? Details I don’t recall …

(Freda and Pete shake hands, and then the music swells, and runs over a series of titles, showing and explaining the fate of the main characters in the film).

But do you remember How it felt? When you first heard them On the radio

(Title: Nine months later, Danny and Lynette had twins).

(Title: Rodney, Brian and Gavin joined the Queensland Police)

Haven’t kept much about you and me …

(Title: Rachelle was arrested for manufacturing pharmaceuticals … by Constables Rodney, Brian and Gavin.)

Or why it all had to end But I do remember …

(Title: Bradley has proposed to Jillian. 238 times.)

How it felt …

(Title: Jillian is writing a girl power book called “The Train Stops Here”. She has an unlisted phone number.)

When we first heard them On the radio ...

(Title: Zack invented a new condom range - “The Zack Sack” - ‘We Should Do it Now’)

Don’t remember the friends we had …

(Title: Yolanda married the Minister for Transport and has had plastic surgery)

Or what we all talked about But do you remember …

(Title: Amanda is now the Elephant Keeper at Taronga Park Zoo.)

How it felt?

(Title: Mason - still missing)

When you first heard them On the radio …

(Title: Pigman is being sought for questioning in regards to Mason)

I haven’t kept much about you and me …

(Title: Wayne and Calvin are now the presenters of the successful Japanese game show - “Hit My Head!”)

Or why it all had to end …

(Title: Pete and Freda lived happily ever after … … but not with each other.)

But I do remember How it felt …

(Last title, over black: Sometimes you have to find new friends)

When we first heard them On the radio ...

(scratchy noises and guitar-led interlude, as end credits roll)

How do you remember How it felt? When you first heard them On the radio ...

Haven’t kept much about you and me Or why it all had to end But I do remember How it felt When we first heard them On the radio ...

Do you remember How it felt? When you first heard them On the radio …

(The song does a quick fade, and is quickly replaced by the next song, as end credits continue to roll)

Song 3:

“Drawback Scars” by Snout:

All right Well all right All right Well all right All right Well all right ...

(Murmured sounds approximating “Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm”)

Scratching Barry’s eyes For a neat disguise To keep feelin’ he’s got too much venom For a man his size I’d have thought it before He’d be out by now But he just squint a little He’s got the drawback scars Chokin’ down cubist cigars (musical interlude)

Turn you in with his tongue With a poison quill Saying he’d be obliged but her money could care I was told it’s so He’d be out by now A little too much for a man his size …yeah For a man his si z z z z e

I got the M.C. and we got the myxomatosis And well we’ve got the academic psychosis He’s got his size 10 slippers with his old French clippers ‘Cause he believes in miracle herbs And self hypnosis …

(musical interlude and “mmm”)

I take the poison in Through my eyelid skin She’s electing what I will and what I won’t take in I suggest that at best He might give it a rest But if you squeal a little We got the drawback scars Chokin’ down cubist cigars

Yeah Yeah All right All right All right All right All right Uh huh

Wayne and Calvin riff:

As the final song dies away, Wayne and Calvin do a riff, which apparently was recorded very late in proceedings, to fill in the gap left by the final song running short and finishing before the end credits did:

(Sounds of crickets, and then a quavering voice):

Wayne: “And the fire slowly dies away …and it is at that point we realise the car has been burnt.”

(Dingo or wolf howl)

Calvin: “What a crock.”

Wayne: “Well, what are we supposed to tell Dad?”

Calvin: “Tell him the truth!”

Wayne: “Truth!? He can’t handle the truth! What about this? We run into a roving pack of gypsies, who teach really good Italian folk songs. Okay, two of them leave and steal the car.”

Calvin: “Now that’s a good idea …” (more crickets)

Compilation and incidental music composer:

Mana Music did the leg work for acquiring rights to the music featured on the soundtrack, and one of their composers did the incidental music.

Trove here had a link to the company archive which provided these details about the music and composer Joost Langeveld:

"Blurred" - the new Australian film premiered on 31st October 2002. The film and CD are both doing brisk business now that exams have finished and schoolies week is in full swing. The film features an exciting young cast, including Matthew Newton, Petra Yared, Kristian Schmid & Jessica Gower.

Music supervision for the film is by Chris Gough and Julie Spinks from Mana Music. It is the debut feature from Director Evan Clarry and tells the story of a group of teenagers all trying to get to the Gold Coast for "Schoolies Week" (The infamous week long party which attracts school leavers from all around the country)

"Blurred" is loaded with new music and features 40 songs from local Australian and NZ bands - an amazing amount of songs for such a small budget film! Bands like Lash, Spiderbait, Grinspoon, Snout, Butterfly 9, Machine Gun Fellatio all feature in the film and are also included on the Soundtrack album available in stores now on the Universal Label.

Director Evan Clarry comments: "We decided early that Blurred needed a pacy, non-stop soundtrack of current tunes from many different genres to match the energy of the performances as well as the differing story lines. R&B for the Limo stuff, Heavy metal for the country boys, gentle ballads for the love story... even some good old C&W. Mana dispatched Julie Spinks to our aid with a few boxes of music, a mobile phone and an enthusiasm for the project that secured us virtually every track we asked for. Within a strained budget and in record time too! Mana really came to the rescue on the soundtrack for Blurred. The movie is the better for their fantastic input”.

Joost Langeveld composed incidental music for the film.

Joost is one of the leading proponents of New Zealand's burgeoning electronic/dance music scene. He is responsible for the groundbreaking Algorhythm compilations of local house music and has gathered production credits on a wide variety of projects including Strawpeople, TrueBliss, Mark De Clive-Lowe, NV, and produced and released a steady stream of music under many different names (Subware, triggerX, mr.Reliable, ReactorMusic and Wriggler). Another link at Trove here provided more details: Joost is a keen collaborator and regularly works with Mana composer Victoria Kelly. Scoring credits include "The Irrefutable Truth About Demons", "Being Eve" and "Toy Love" in collaboration with Victoria Kelly, "Snakeskin" with Lleyton and animated films "Blinder" and "Infection". Among many TV credits, Joost's "Popstars" theme is used with each "Popstars" production made around the world. Joost is the label manager and A&R person for Kog Transmissions' House Music Label Reliable Recordings.
