Introduction The Scottish Hill Runners Calendar provides a comprehensive list of hill races in Scotland for 2011, and includes Highland Games, Mountain Marathons and junior hill races. Several championship fixtures from further afield are also included, such as the World Championship and World Masters races.

We suggest that for any amendments to race details, you should check the SHR website at www.shr.uk.com. For races at Highland Games events, we advise you to phone the organiser before travelling (particularly for the race’s start time), or visit www.shga.co.uk .

If you find any errors in the Calendar, or have any amendments to make, then please e-mail the corrections to [email protected], or contact the Secretary (address below).

Many shorter races are suitable for juniors or have separate courses for (1) An “official UKA Fell Race” is one held under UKA Rules for Competition. juniors. The rule specifies the maximum length of course that juniors are (2) A fell race is one run on fell, hill or mountain terrain and shall be categorised as permitted to race: follows: Under 12 3 km Category A Over 12/Under 14 5 km Should average not less than 76m (250 feet) of climb per 1.6km (mile). Run4It Scottish Hill Runners Championships 2011 Senior Championship The Run4It SHR Senior Championship for 2011 consists of the following 6 races: Birnam (S), Slioch (L), Yetholm (M), Eildon (S), Ben Rinnes (L) and Ben Venue (M). 1. To complete the Championship, you must finish one race from each category (S, M, L), plus one other: i.e. four races in total. (NB: For the 60+ category, runners are allowed to complete any 4 out of the 6 races). Each runner who completes the Championship will be awarded a memento. 2. Medals will be awarded to the first three male and female runners in each category – Senior, V40, V50 and V60. Category winners will also receive a trophy, to be kept for one year. Category is determined by runner’s age on the day of the race. Team prizes will be awarded to the first Senior and Over-40 teams, four runners to count for Senior men’s teams and three for Senior women’s teams. Over-40 teams are three runners to count for both men and women. NB: An athlete can only count for one Club's team in a given championship race. (Awards kindly sponsored by Run4It.) 3. To receive a trophy or medal, you must be able to claim Scottish eligibility: i.e. be Scottish by birth or residence, or via a first-claim Scottish club. 4. Points are awarded to the first 40 runners in each category, except for the Over 60s and teams, where points are awarded to the first 20 only. The winner in each category receives one extra point, e.g. 41 points for first, 39 points for second, etc. You don’t need to score any points to receive a memento, so long as you complete the relevant four races. 5 In the event of a tie in any of the championship categories, the winner will be the one who has beaten the other the most in championship races. If contenders are still equal after this has been applied, then they will tie. 6. There is no requirement for runners to be a member of an affiliated Club or of SHR.

To be eligible, runners must be born in the years 1989 to 1992 (ie they have to be under 23 for the whole of 2011). They must also have Scottish eligibility, i.e. be Scottish by birth, or by residence, or via a first-claim Scottish club. 2. To complete the Championship, you must do at least 2 races. Runners count their 2 best results. 3. Points are awarded to the first 10 men and women, with the winner receiving one extra point: i.e. 11 points for first, 9 points for second, 8 points for third, etc. The winner will be the runner with the highest score from their two best results. If two runners have the same score, the person with the better aggregate score over the three races will win. If this still results in a tie, then the position will be shared 4. Awards will be presented to the first three men and women (providing they have Scottish eligibility), and mementos given to all runners completing at least two races, regardless of eligibility. All SHR Championship queries to the statistician, Andy Spenceley, [email protected] scottishathletics Hill Running Championships 2011 Senior Championship The scottishathletics Championship Race will be the Eildon Two Hills race on Saturday 25 June. Only individual members of scottishathletics will count for the Championship (although the race itself is open to all in the usual way). The championship categories are: individual senior men/women; under 23 men/women; veteran men/women (O/40); and super-veteran men/women (O/50). Under 23 is defined born in the years 1989 to 1992 (to be consistent with IAAF rules, runners have to be under 23 for the whole of 2011). For Vets, category is determined by age on the day of the race. There is also a club team competition, with first four to count for men’s teams, and first three to count for women’s teams.

Junior Competitions The scottishathletics Junior Championships will take place at Ben Lomond on Saturday 7 May. The Championship is open to members of scottishathletics. The categories are U19 (defined as born 1992–94), U16 (born 1995-96), U14 (born 1997-98), with separate male and female awards. The scottishathletics Junior Hill Running League was introduced several years ago to encourage competitive opportunities for junior hill runners. In 2011, the League has been extended to include four races. Runners will be awarded points based on their best two results of the four nominated League races, which are: 1. The Lomonds of Fife Junior Race, Purin Hill (near Falkland), 27 March. 2. scottishathletics Junior Championships, Ben Lomond, 7 May. This is also the World Youth Challenge selection race. 3. Scolty Junior race, Banchory, 5 June. 4. Junior Home International Trial Race, Menstrie, 28 August. The League is open to members of scottishathletics. The categories are U19 (born 1992–94), U16 (born 1995-96), U14 (born 1997-98). Points are awarded to the first eighteen individuals in each category, with points for the team competition following the same scoring format: 1st place 25 points, 2nd 20 points, 3rd 17 points, 4th 15 points, 5th 14 points, reducing at one point intervals down to 18th one point. As a bonus, all runners and teams who complete all four league races will be awarded an additional two league points. In the event of a tie, performance at the JHI trial (Menstrie), then head to heads, then number of races, then performance at the scottishathletics Junior Championships (Ben Lomond) will be used. There are separate male and female awards for each age group. The Eddie Campbell Memorial Medal is awarded at the end of each year for excellence in junior hill running. The criteria are sportsmanship, commitment and outstanding performance, with particular emphasis on the races detailed above. Full details can be found at www.scottishathletics.org.uk (under “Performance” >“Selection Policies”).

Runners and Safety Individual runners (as well as race organisers) have responsibilities with regard to safety. Precise requirements demanded by a race organiser will also depend on his/her insurance arrangements. It is mandatory under Fell Runners Association Safety Requirements that ALL category A Long and Medium races require competitors to carry windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the weather conditions, map and compass, whistle, emergency food (long races). This requirement applies whatever the weather or time of year. Scottish Hill Runners requires that all race organisers comply, at the very least, with this sensible rule, irrespective of their other safety arrangements. Competitors should realise that if they breach an organiser’s safety kit requirements, they put themselves and their fellow competitors at risk and they will be disqualified.

The key points for runners are: All hill race competitors have prime responsibility for their own safety. This is a risk sport. Arrive at the venue with as much kit as the organisers are likely to require you to carry on the day. This means windproof and waterproof full body cover, hat, gloves, map, compass, whistle, food. GPS devices are NOT a substitute for a traditional compass, although they may be carried in races where the organisers allow them. Have the necessary skills to cope with any navigational problems you may encounter, whatever the weather. Complete a ‘short’ or preferably ‘medium’ category 'A' race before running in a 'long' one. Be able to recognise the signs of hypothermia, hypoglycaemia and heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Hypothermia: not responding to conversation; uncoordinated movement and speech; inability to think clearly; wanting to carry on in adverse conditions; skin cold where normally warm, such as under armpit. Immediate action: wrap in warm clothing. Hypoglycaemia: confusion, ill co-ordinated movement and speech; weakness, hunger. Immediate action: drink glucose solution or suck sweets. Heat exhaustion: general fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, vomiting, fainting, cold/clammy or hot/dry skin. Immediate action: rest in a cooler place with feet elevated and drink (salty) water. Know what the organiser's 'drop-out' procedures are and comply with them. As a minimum, if you retire you MUST notify the officials at the finish (and the nearest check-point marshal, if appropriate) before you leave the area. If you see someone in trouble YOU MUST HELP, even if it costs you the race.

Scottish Hill Runners Calendar 2011 - online with results at www.shr.uk.com Insurance Scottish Hill Runners offers its own insurance policy as a privilege of SHR membership. This provides third party liability insurance for all SHR members as participants or as race organisers for any hill race. N.B: Race organisers should note that cover is not automatic - they must register their race with SHR (Ronnie Gallagher) and complete the safety sign-off document well in advance of their race. For more information, as well as the required documentation, go to www.shr.uk.com/Insurance.aspx; or contact: Ronnie Gallagher, 5 Wyndhead Steading, Lauder, Berwickshire, TD2 6UD. Email: [email protected] .

Clubs affiliated to scottishathletics are covered by the UK Athletics insurance policy for all their organised athletics activities including any races promoted by the club. Race promoters who are not athletics clubs may affiliate to scottishathletics under the category of associate membership if they wish to have their races covered by the UK Athletics insurance policy. scottishathletics rules require affiliated bodies to obtain a permit for any open race they promote. Race organisers therefore have a choice of insurance through either SHR, scottishathletics, or privately-arranged insurance.

Race organisers should carefully examine the available insurance schemes (there are differences!) and choose the one they judge most suitable for their requirements. For the scottishathletics insurance, contact John McDonald at 0131 539 7320 ([email protected]).

Remember that gross disregard for accepted good safety practice may invalidate any insurance.

Please send Ronnie Gallagher, in confidence, a note of any problems, accidents, incidents or near misses that occurred during your race. These will only be made public with your permission. Your experience will help SHR to offer a better service to runners and organisers.

Race Organisers Pack SHR provides a race organisers pack, available by emailing [email protected], or online at www.shr.uk.com. The pack covers logistics of organising a race, safety, environmental issues and useful kit for the organiser. We are indebted to Scott McKendrick and his company, AdvertisignDirect, for generous support of this initiative.

Race Results Could race organisers please send their race results to [email protected], as soon as possible after the race in Excel format. Results will be published on the SHR website at www.shr.uk.com. We would also appreciate a short race report to post on the website.

Calendar Entries for 2012 Finally, could race organisers please email 2012 race details to [email protected], preferably by 31 October 2011.

The Connoisseurs Mountain Marathon June 11th/12th 2011 The LAMM is a 2-day mountain orienteering event that takes place each year in the Scottish Highlands. The emphasis is always on challenging routes in classic high mountain country. This year will be a "North" year for the LAMM. Our planner this year is Andy Spenceley, well known to MMers and fell runners alike. Andy planned the excellent courses at Inchnadamph in 2006, Glenfinnan in 2008 and Glen Fyne in 2010. The emphasis is always on challenging routes in classic high mountain country. The 2011 area is scattered with Munros and Corbetts and we've worked hard to find a wild location for the Midcamp that allows us to make best use of the area and provide great courses. Since 1994 the event has visited these wonderful locations:

2011 3_ Hrs North of Glasgow/Edinburgh! 2010 Glen Fyne 2009 Morvich & Kintail 2008 Glenfinnan & Loch Arkaig 2007 Auchtertyre & Glen Lyon 2006 Inchnadamph & Assynt 2005 Isle of Mull 2004 Glencarron 2003 Spittal O’ Glenshee 2002 Loch Katrine & Balquhidder 2001 Ardverikie, Ben Alder & 2000 Glen Shiel & Knoydart Corrour 1999 Black Mount & Bridge of Orchy 1998 Corran & Ardgour 1997 Isle of Jura Classic 1996 Grey Corries & Mamores 1995 Isle of Mull 1994 Arrochar Alps

We limit the number of teams to 500 and the event always fills to capacity. The limit ensures that we are able to visit fine venues that might otherwise be impossible to use. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere on Friday night at the Event Centre camping field allows friends to meet up and old acquaintances to be renewed. Scotts Outdoor Catering provides Friday evening meals in the marquee and a post event meal. We like to make our event exciting and build a sense of anticipation. Apart from providing an approximate travelling time, we keep the venue secret until just before the event so that the area is a 'surprise' to all competitors. We have been known to move 1000 of you up to 40 miles on the Saturday morning to an unexpected start so that you can enjoy the challenge of running over the mountains for two days as you head over the hills to finish back at the Event Centre. Why not make a date with the LAMM and find out for yourself why many consider it the Connoisseur’s Mountain Marathon. We’ll see you in the Highlands on Friday 10th June. MARTIN STONE Event Organiser Full details at www.lamm.co.uk. Please visit the website, add yourself to the LAMM email list and you will then receive event updates. The race has several objectives: one is to encourage sailors to appreciate fell running, for runners to appreciate sailing and for both to enjoy what must be some of the best sailing and hill running in the world; another is to help to build the self confidence of the youngsters sailing in the Youth Teams; yet another is to raise funds for various good causes; but the main objective is to provide a challenging experience to sailors and runners who may be too busy to devote weeks to 2 sailing the Atlantic or trekking in Tibet but who still 0 relish overcoming a challenge which 1 is well beyond those 2 1 normally encountered in 0 our modern well insulated 1 lives. 1 Although the race can be extremely competitive, for most people, it is not the thought of winning that brings wish you were here...? them back year after year but simply the pleasure of sailing and running in the company of a great crowd of like minded people. We all love the hills and seas of the Scottish West Coast and the race is just an excuse for the annual jamboree when we can celebrate our good fortune at being able to experience this great adventure in these wonderful surroundings. www.sipr.zetnet.co.uk Scottish Hill Runners Calendar 2011 - online with results at www.shr.uk.com Scottish Hill Runners Champions Senior Men Senior Women Men Over 40 1983 Robin Morris Edinburgh AC not awarded 1984 Andy Curtis Livingston Ann Curtis Livingston Mel Edwards Aberdeen 1985 Andy Curtis Livingston Ann Curtis Livingston Mel Edwards Aberdeen 1986 Dermot McGonigle Dundee HH Ann Curtis Livingston Bobby Shields Clydesdale 1987 Andy Curtis Livingston Chris Whalley Livingston Peter Fettes Lochaber 1988 Alan Farningham Gala Penny Rother Edinburgh AC Pete Marshall H.E.L.P. 1989 Denis Bell H.E.L.P.
