Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been acknowledged in the thesis. iii Abstract Ancient Krete perceived itself, and was perceived from outside, as rather different from the rest of Greece, particularly with respect to religion, social structure, and laws. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the bases for these perceptions and their accuracy. Krete’s self-perception is examined in the light of the account of Diodoros Siculus (Book 5, 64-80, allegedly based on Kretan sources), backed up by inscriptions and archaeology, while outside perceptions are derived mainly from other literary sources, including, inter alia, Homer, Strabo, Plato and Aristotle, Herodotos and Polybios; in both cases making reference also to the fragments and testimonia of ancient historians of Krete. While the main cult-epithets of Zeus on Krete – Diktaios, associated with pre-Greek inhabitants of eastern Krete, Idatas, associated with Dorian settlers, and Kretagenes, the symbol of the Hellenistic koinon - are almost unique to the island, those of Apollo are not, but there is good reason to believe that both Delphinios and Pythios originated on Krete, and evidence too that the Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphic and Dionysiac rites had much in common with early Kretan practice. The early institutionalization of pederasty, and the abduction of boys described by Ephoros, are unique to Krete, but the latter is distinct from rites of initiation to manhood, which continued later on Krete than elsewhere, and were associated with different gods.

Oakley Excerpt More information 1 JUPITER THE ANTIQUARIAN : THE NAME OF IULUS (VIRGIL, AENEID 1.267–8) ALESSANDRO BARCHIESI In his prophecy to Venus , Jupiter declares: at puer Ascanius, cui nunc cognomen Iulo additur – Ilus erat, dum res stetit Ilia regno – … But the boy Ascanius, to whom now the extra name ‘Iulus’ is given (he was called ‘Ilus’ while the Ilian state stood fi rm with its kingdom) (Virg. Aen . 1.267–8) This is a very intense moment in the poem and in its recon- struction of the Roman past. The name ‘Iulus’ provides the transition – brilliantly analysed in terms of prosody and politics by Cowan 2009 – between Trojan Ilus and Roman Iulius. The survival and metonomasia of Ilus are also cru- cial to the diffi cult negotiation between Augustan dynastic ideology and the Latin tradition of Silvius and the kings of Alba Longa. 1 The sentence is usually considered as a statement of fact – at this point in the story Iulus is acquiring his future name, and it appears to be obvious that Jupiter’s prophecy is complemen- tary to the narrator’s voice. Taken together, the two voices con- spire to give nunc a particular emphasis: a loaded moment in the plot, in the story itself, and in the tradition of the Aeneas legend, a legend so fertile in dynastic manipulations. TC 2014; 6(2): 278–296 Corinne Pache Theban Walls in Homeric Epic DOI 10.1515/tc-2014-0015 Throughout the Iliad, the Greeks at Troy often refer to the wars at Thebes in their speeches, and several important warriors fighting on the Greek side at Troy also fought at Thebes and are related to Theban heroes who besieged the Boeotian city a generation earlier. The Theban wars thus stand in the shadow of the story of war at Troy, another city surrounded by walls supposed to be impregnable. In the Odyssey, the Theban connections are less central, but nevertheless significant as one of our few sources concerning the building of the Theban walls. In this essay, I analyze Theban traces in Homeric epic as they relate to city walls. Since nothing explicitly concerning walls remains in the extant fragments of the Theban Cycle, we must look to Homeric poetry for formulaic and thematic elements that can be connected with Theban epic.

    Virgil Aeneid X Further Commentary Notes Servius, the author of a fourth-century CE commentary on Virgil is mentioned several times. Servius based his notes extensively on the lost commentary composed earlier in the century by Aelius Donatus. A version of Servius, amplified by material apparently taken straight from Donatus, was compiled later, probably in the seventh or eighth century. It was published in 1600 by Pierre Daniel and is variously referred to as Servius Auctus, Servius Danielis, or DServius. Cross-reference may be made to language notes – these are in the printed book. An asterisk against a word means that it is a term explained in ‘Introduction, Style’ in the printed book. A tilde means that the term is explained in ‘Introduction, Metre’ in the printed book. 215 – 6 In epic, descriptions of the time of day, particularly dawn, call forth sometimes surprising poetic flights. In Homer these are recycled as formulae; not so in Virgil (for the most part), although here he is adapting a passage from an earlier first- century epic poet Egnatius, from whose depiction of dawn seems to come the phrase curru noctivago (cited in Macrobius, Sat. 6.5.12). This is the middle of the night following Aeneas’s trip to Caere. The chronology of Books VIII – X is as follows: TWO DAYS AGO Aeneas sails up the Tiber to Evander (VIII).     Papers of the British School at Rome 77 (2009), pp. 65–99 Revisiting the pediment of the Palatine metroo¨n: a Vergilian interpretation1 by Roslynne Bell Introduction Exactly two centuries after the temple of the Magna Mater was brought to light on the southwest corner of the Palatine, excavations continue to clarify the evolution of Rome’s foremost metroac sanctuary and the rituals practised therein.2 This intensive examination of archaeological material, however, only highlights the marked and surprising lack of interest in the metroo¨n’s pedi- mental sculpture. This may be because only a few fragments of architectural decoration remain; but our losses are ameliorated by one of the so-called Valle-Medici reliefs (a section of sculptural frieze from a Julio-Claudian monu- ment that has never been identified securely), which depicts the front of the temple in some detail.3 Regrettably, the relief is immured high in the fac¸ade of the Villa Medici, making firsthand examination extremely difficult. None the less, a plaster cast of the original in the Museo della Civilta` Romana provides 4 an easily accessible facsimile (FIG. 1). Classical Mythology in the Victorian Popular Theatre Edith Hall Introduction: Classics and Class Several important books published over the last few decades have illuminated the diversity of ways in which educated nineteenth-century Britons used ancient Greece and Rome in their art, architecture, philosophy, political theory, poetry, and fiction. The picture has been augmented by Christopher Stray’s study of the history of classical education in Britain, in which he systematically demonstrates that however diverse the elite’s responses to the Greeks and Romans during this period, knowledge of the classical languages served to create and maintain class divisions and effectively to exclude women and working-class men from access to the professions and the upper levels of the civil service. This opens up the question of the extent to which people with little or no education in the classical languages knew about the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. One of the most important aspects of the burlesques of Greek drama to which the argument turned towards the end of the previous chapter is their evidential value in terms of the access to classical culture available in the mid-nineteenth century to working- and lower- middle-class people, of both sexes, who had little or no formal training in Latin or Greek. For the burlesque theatre offered an exciting medium through which Londoners—and the large proportion of the audiences at London theatres who travelled in from the provinces—could appreciate classical material. Burlesque was a distinctive theatrical genre which provided entertaining semi-musical travesties of well-known texts and stories, from Greek tragedy and Ovid to Shakespeare and the Arabian Nights, between approximately the 1830s and the 1870s.

The shocking death of Princess Diana in 1997 brought a great deal of attention to bear on Great Britain’s royal family—much of it negative. Many complaints came forward about the Civil List, the sum granted by Parliament to meet the House of Windsor’s official expenses—which was “set at £8.9 million a year, but other royal income, including the Queen’s travel allowance, raises the cost to the taxpayer to about £50 million a year” (The Telegraph, Sept. 14, 1997). Also at issue has been the degree of public access to royal palaces. Of course, the events of Sept. 11, 2001, have done much to silence such concerns. But there is still discontent over the level of communication between the royal family and the British people. Prime Minister Tony Blair has advocated the monarchy paying for itself. But that’s a far cry from the reform sought by many in his party, who want a republic. In 1997, the British Telegraph explained that “many of his Cabinet colleagues have previously made controversial comments about the Royal Family, including Ron Davies, the Welsh Secretary, who said Prince Charles was not fit to be king, and John Prescott, the Deputy Prime Minister, who has declared himself to be in favour of abolishing the monarchy.” The same newspaper cited another source as saying that “the logic of New Labour—especially the abolition of hereditary peers—could lead even Blair supporters to call for the scrapping of the monarchy.” The Sunday Times of London, reporting on a survey it conducted with a major British polling firm, said that “the royals must modernise to survive—a majority (58%) do not believe the monarchy will exist in its present form in 30 years’ time” (Sept.
