Epsom-Ascot-Huntly Floodplain Management Study Stage 6

Welcome to the fifth and final Project Bulletin for the Epsom-Ascot-Huntly Floodplain Management Study. This bulletin is a part of an ongoing commitment to keep the community informed about the progress of the study.

To improve the way that flooding is managed in the area, the Victorian Government, in conjunction with the City of Greater undertook the Epsom-Ascot-Huntly Floodplain Management Study.

This Floodplain Management Study aimed to investigate and assess all options to manage flooding in the area in order to determine methods that deliver the best result for the entire community. In addition to options suggested by the City and other government bodies, this project included a significant number of ideas that have been proposed by members of the community themselves.

Study Process

The Epsom-Ascot-Huntly Floodplain Management Study consists of six stages:

Stage 1 – Find out from the community about all possible options to manage flooding Stage 2 – Undertake preliminary assessment of every suggested idea, including a rough estimate Stage 3 – Obtain community views on a preliminary list of options Stage 4 – Undertake a detailed assessment of the options preferred by the community Stage 5 – Obtain community views on selected options Stage 6 – Finalise the study and use the results to apply for State and Federal Government funding assistance to construct the preferred options

After two stages that involved community consultation, the final selection of mitigation options was made by the study’s Advisory Group. This group consists of mostly community volunteers, including representatives from a number of community organisations, as well as members of the and relevant State Government Agencies.

Forty nine mitigation options were initially tested, with seven undergoing a detailed assessment. There was also testing of a number of variations of the seven options that underwent detailed investigation.

If you have any questions regarding the project please contact the City’s Engineering Department on 5434 6000 In its final deliberations, the Advisory Group reviewed the collected feedback and results of the consultation in addition to the flood modelling and construction estimates for each option. It considered the final report from the technical consultants and adopted the following options for recommendation to the City for further development/ funding:

• Option 1d which is a combination of levee works on Racecourse Creek and levee works on Bendigo Creek up to Leans Road (see map below) • Option 9a which is an upgrade to the culverts and floodway at Leans Road • Option 18 which is reshaping of Back Creek between Howard Street and Ironstone Road.

The City has already applied for and been successful with grant funding under the Natural Disaster Resilience Scheme to undertake the survey and design for the Racecourse Creek levee (part of Option 1d).

The City wishes to thank the local community for its input to the study.
