Each coin features a letter of the alphabet along with a quintessentially British subject starting with that letter; B for Bond, F for Fish and Chips, and Q for Queue are just three of my favourites! The pause during the middle wartime years was to conserve vital materials such as copper and tin. The pennies produced towards the end of the war had a lower composition of these valuable materials causing them to tarnish to a lighter colour, which were then treated to give them a darker tone.

Bank notes were first issued by the Bank of England in 1694 to act as a receipt in exchange for gold loans to fund war against France. The owner of a banknote could redeem it for an equivalent sum of gold when presented to a cashier. This right was ended in 1931 when Britain stopped using the gold standard, although to this day banknotes are printed with the words ‘I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of’.

The Penny Black is recognised as the world’s ‘A truly personalised present’ first adhesive stamp and is without question the most internationally renowned stamp to both collectors and the public. Featuring a portrait of Queen Victoria and printed by the Perkins Bacon Company, the Penny Black was issued on the 6th May 1840.
Each stamp has two letters, one in each bottom corner, which relate to the stamps original sheet position. The left corner identifies the horizontal column and the right letter the vertical. In total there were twenty horizontal rows (up to the letter T) and twelve vertical rows (up to the letter L).
