Which Denomination Did They Join? QUESTION: Which denomination did Peter, James, John, Paul, Luke, Timothy and other early Christians belong to? ANSWER: None. They belonged to no denomination for the simple reason that no denomination, Catholic or Protestant, existed at that time. These people were simple Christians. Acts 11:26, “the disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.” The New Testament does not authorize men to to build churches or denominations. Christ said, “I will build my church.” Matthew 16:18 “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” Ps. 127:1. When Christ built his church He did not build a denomination or any kind of human institution. It is simply the body of saved people in the world. The Lord adds saved people together, or to the church. Acts 2:41, 47. They are the body of Christ, for the church is the body. Eph. 1:22-23. There is only one body. Eph. 4:4, 1 Cor. 12:20. Christian are those redeemed by the blood fo the Lamb of God. 1 Pet. 1:18-19. Thus, the body of Christ, or church of Christ, is the assembly made up of those who are saved. Eph. 5:25 says that Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it. He bought it with His blood, so it is His. Acts 20:28. Early Christian were in the church belonging to Christ, nothing more, nothing less, nothing else and nothing different. It was not a denomination then, and it is not a denomination now. It existed before men taught false doctrines which brought the denominations into existance.
