20 BENJAMIN N. CARDOZO SCHOOL OF LAW

r Law This marks the Fourth Annual Commencement Exercises of Benjamin N. Cardozo ~asurer School of Law, which was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 1974 and opened in September 1976. It was named to honor the memory of the late distinguished jurist who, as Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals and then as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, established a tradition of excellence in the law. The purpose of the Law School is to achieve the great goals of legal education articulated by Justice Cardozo in 1935: "We are trying to teach law and to study it scientifically, and yet imaginatively too-feeling our way to a new sense of its significance, of the forces OSENBAUM that have brought it into being, of the processes that are keeping it alive, and of the ends that it must serve and foster if its high potencies are not to fail."

The Law School is committed to excellence in legal education and the welfare of the general community. Its course of study-leading to the Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree-prepares students for both traditional and emerging forms of profes sional legal practice as well as for positions in business, public service, and other areas where a legal education has relevance. ER

Yeshiva University's commitment to quality together with its renowned TEIN scholarship in the Judaic heritage are a strong foundation for a law school shaped by tradition yet able to blend the past with the complex requirements of modern society.

In recognition of the vital role of the library in the education of the law student, the Law School has developed a facility to rank among the nation's outstanding legal libraries. The 45,000-square-foot Lillian and Rebecca Chutick Law Library houses over 200,000 volumes, includi!1g collections of statutes, reports, digests, LD and periodicals. To further enhance its usefulness as a research center, the design >LER of the Law Library incorporates appropriate systems technology. A well equipped microprinter and photocopy area increases the accessibility of all materials. Students may also utilize the other Yeshiva University libraries housing some 850,000 volumes, periodicals, and special collections in all branches of the arts and sciences and J udaica.

21 BENJAMIN N. CARDOZO SCHOOL OF LAW

Honoring by name those whose benefactions have contributed substantially to the founding and development of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law are: Brookdale Foundation; Lillian and Rebecca Chutick Law Library; Jacob Burns Moot Court; Sidney Weisner Lecture Hall; Furst Faculty Lounge, donated by Melvin J. and Gerald Furst; Fay Rotenberg Student Lounge; library reading areas: Joseph M. and Dorothy Drexler, Joe and Celia Weinstein; and a growing number of Cardozo Fellows.

The Dr. Samuel Belkin Chair in Law,and Society memorializes the late president of Yeshiva University who died in April 1976. A distinguished educator of more than 35 years of service and the founder of Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, he established the Law School and appointed the late Monrad G. Paulsen as its first dean.

Other chairs have also been established to help ensure the quality of instruction and scholarship at the School: the Joseph and Sadie Danciger Chair in Law; Dr. Herman George and Kate Kaiser Chair in Constitutional Law, held by Prof. Telford Taylor; and Herbert and Florence Tenzer Chair in Jewish Law and Ethics, held by Dr. J. David Bleich.

The Nathaniel L. Goldstein Annual Lecture, initiated in 1979, is a series presenting leading members of the legal profession.

The Bertha and Richard G. Alexander Jurist Scholar-in-Residence Program, established in 1982, presents each year an eminent member of the judiciary in residence at Cardozo to address students, faculty, and the general public.

Another major component of the growing Law School is its broad spectrum of student activities, including the Cardozo Law Review, voluntary competitions of the Jacob Burns Moot Court, Arts and Entertainment Law Journal, and Student Bar Association.
