    AUSTRALIA V. WEST INDIES DECEMBER 28, 2015 BOXING DAY TEST FACT SHEET - DAY 3 LIBRARY Beginning with the inaugural Test match in March 1877, 107 Tests have been staged at the MCG. One Test, in 1970/71, was abandoned without a ball bowled and is not counted in the records. Fourteen of the matches have involved West Indies, Australia winning 10 of those contests, West Indies three, with the other drawn. The other sides to play Tests at the MCG are England (55), India (12), South Africa (12), Pakistan (9), New Zealand (3) and Sri Lanka (2). Only Lord's Cricket Ground (130) has hosted more Test matches than the MCG. As Lord's currently has two Test matches per summer (it hosted three in 2010), it will extend its lead as the MCG has not hosted two Test matches in the same season since 1981/82. Of the 114 Tests between Australia and West Indies to date, Australia has won 57, West Indies 32, one has been tied and the remaining 24 drawn. The current Test is Australia's 785th and West Indies’ 512th. Of its 784 Tests to date, Australia has won 369 (47.06 per cent), lost 208 (26.53 per cent) and tied two. The remaining 205 have been drawn. The fact sheets for today's game will review the inaugural five-Test series between the two countries, the first match beginning at Adelaide Oval on 18 December 1930, 85 years ago, almost to the day. A summary of each match will appear during the course of this game.

    England in Australia 1928-29 Five Tests. England Won 4 - 1. Balls per over: 6 Playing Hours: 5 hr days - Timeless Captains: J Ryder (Aus), APF Chapman (Eng) Cricket history had turned the page in 1926 when England won back the Ashes. This induced a rather extreme response from Australian authorities, who stripped captain Collins and team manager Syd Smith from all official positions down to and including district grade level. Australian cricket strength remained fragile in 1928-29, mainly because the abundance of batting talent was not balanced by the bowling, and many batting records were being set in Sheffield Shield which still stand, notably Victoria’s score of 1,107 all out. At the outset of the Test series, Australia’s youngest bowler was 33 years old, and there were no fast bowlers to speak of: Jack Gregory had lost pace and would break down, sadly and irretrievably, in the first Test. The MCC had talent in depth in all departments, with a top order – Sutcliffe, Hobbs and Hammond – as formidable as any team has ever assembled. Their style was suited to the timeless format, and the pace was measured throughout. Although it did not escape notice at the time, subsequent commentators have tended to gloss over just how slowly these players scored their runs. Hammond’s utter domination of the bowling was achieved at a dull, consistent 36 runs/100 balls. At one stage, after he had scored 602 runs in the space of four innings, with only two dismissals by the bowlers (one of them a spectacular diving catch off a full-blooded drive), he still took 603 balls to score 177 in his next dig.

    Obituary for Professor R.E. ‘Sam’ Luxton, FTS, FIEAust, FAIE, FRSAMC, FRSA Professor Russell Escourt ‘Sam’ Luxton passed away on Friday 24 May 2013. He was a truly remarkable person, whose contributions, especially to the University of Adelaide, the State of South Australia and to the nation, can only be described as “immense”. Sam had a larger than life persona with a comic sense of humour, combining dignity with a down-to-earth humanity. He was driven by a passionate desire to make a difference in the world and was respected as much for his personal qualities as for his professional contributions. Sam is survived by his sister Jean (Nean), wife Jeanie, sons Daniel and Ben to his first wife Rosemary, and by their partners and families as a much loved and respected brother, husband, father, and grandfather to Ethan and Raphael. Russell Luxton was born on February 3rd, 1933 at Rockhampton, Queensland, later moving to Melbourne with his parents to be educated at Geelong Grammar School. It was there that his cricket prowess earned him the nickname ‘Sam’, after Sam Loxton, OBE, of Sir Donald Bradman’s national team, “The Invincibles”. These skills would re-emerge from time-to-time as a faculty member at both Sydney and Adelaide, where he was seen to unerringly “bowl” pieces of screwed up paper into paper bins and, later, hitting a ball around with his grandchildren. He gained a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours from The University of Adelaide, whilst also continuing to shine on the University cricket team, and serving as President of the A.U.
