Along with ground penetrating radar (GPR), which is a fully non-destructive method, a number of electrical resistivity tomographies (ERTs) were carried out. Bentonite mud electrodes were used instead of metal stakes, in order to comply with the non-destructive character of the whole operation. Our aim was to study the subsurface geological structures at the location of the mosque, and to detect and possibly map any ancient remains concealed under the monument. Both ERT and GPR results indicated a distinct, near surface horizontal discontinuity which was attributed to the presence of an ancient floor at the atrium area of the mosque. This floor was then revealed after a subsequent excavation. Moreover, high resistivity anomalies and distinct GPR signals were observed deeper at the atrium area. They are attributed to possible voids, remains of ancient walls, or other man-made structures concealed under the floor of the monument.

It sets out the definitions of Cultural Sponsorship according to Greek Law as well as the examination of Cultural Sponsorship in comparison to Donation, Grant, Advertising, Sales Promotion, fundraising. The historical review gives an insight into the fundamental principles that govern Sponsorship throughout the centuries. • The Western Question in Greece and Turkey
THE WESTERN QUESTION IN GREECE AND TURKEY A STUDY IN THE CONTACT OF CIVILISATIONS BY ARNOLD J. TOYNBEE ‘For we are also His offspring’ CONSTABLE AND COMPANY LTD LONDON · BOMBAY · SYDNEY 1922 TO THE PRESIDENT AND FACULTY OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE FOR GIRLS AT CONSTANTINOPLE THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED BY THE AUTHOR AND HIS WIFE IN GRATITUDE FOR THEIR HOSPITALITY AND IN ADMIRATION OF THEIR NEUTRAL-MINDEDNESS IN CIRCUMSTANCES IN WHICH NEUTRALITY IS ‘HARD AND RARE’ PREFACE THIS book is an attempt to place certain recent events in the Near and Middle East in their historical setting, and to illustrate from them several new features of more enduring importance than the events themselves. It is not a discussion of what the peace-settlement in the East ought to be, for the possibility of imposing a cut-and-dried scheme, if it ever really existed, was destroyed by the landing of the Greek troops at Smyrna in May 1919. At any rate, from that moment the situation resolved itself into a conflict of forces beyond control; the Treaty of Sèvres was still-born; and subsequent conferences and agreements, however imposing, have had and are likely to have no more than a partial and temporary effect. On the other hand, there have been real changes in the attitude of the Western public towards their Governments’ Eastern policies, which have produced corresponding changes in those policies themselves; and the Greeks and Turks have appeared in unfamiliar roles. The Greeks have shown the same unfitness as the Turks for governing a mixed population. The Turks, in their turn, have become exponents of the political nationalism of the West.

I argue that it was the ambiguous play between Greek music’s discursive value (its “image”) and the semiotic potential of its sound and music-adjacent practices, that allowed for its double-reception by Euro-Israeli elites and Working-class immigrants from Arab and Muslim countries (Mizrahim). This ambiguity positioned Greek music as a site for bypassing, negotiating, and subverting the dichotomy between Jew and Arab. As embodied in the 1960s by the biggest local star of Greek music––Aris San (1940- 1992) ––and by Greek international films such as Zorba the Greek, Greece and “Greekness” were often perceived as an unthreatening (i.e.

  • Greece (Greek: Ελλάδα [E Lađa] Elláda), Officially The
census, Greece's population is around 11 million. Athens is the nation's capital and largest city, its urban area also including Piraeus. Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa[13][14][15] and has land borders with Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, and Bulgaria to the north and Turkey to the northeast. The Aegean Sea lies to the east of mainland Greece, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Greece has the 11th longest coastline in the world at 13,676 km (8,498 mi) in length, featuring a vast number of islands (approximately 1,400, of which 227 are inhabited), including Crete, the Dodecanese, the Cyclades, and the Ionian Islands among others. Eighty percent of Greece consists of mountains, of which Mount Olympus is the highest at 2,917 m (9,570 ft). Modern Greece traces its roots to the civilization of Ancient Greece, generally considered the cradle of Western civilization. As such, it is the birthplace of democracy,[16] Western philosophy,[17] the Olympic Games, Western literature and historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, and Western drama,[18] including both tragedy and comedy. This legacy is partly reflected in the 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites located in Greece, ranking it 7th in Europe and 13th in the world. Greek language, culture, and identity emerged early in human history, having endured centuries of significant political and social change, including foreign domination. The modern Greek state, which encompasses much of the historical core of Greek civilization, was established in 1830, following the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire.

  • Athens, Greece Overview
Courtesy of: Melody Moser Journeys Near and Far, LLC Athens, Greece Overview Introduction Sights in ancient Greece, and especially Athens, take on a larger importance than in most other places in the world. They are histories of democracy, Western civilization and philosophy firsthand. You can't help but walk around the Parthenon and the rest of the Acropolis and dream about the great ones who have come before you and whose footsteps you're in. Athens is a must-see on any European tour. The ancient and modern merge in this city in ways that are fascinating and sometimes overwhelming. Pollution wreathes the golden stones of the Acropolis and obscures views of the Saronic Gulf. Cars bleat and belch among ranks of concrete high-rises. But then you turn down a cobbled lane and discover vine-swathed tavernas, tortoises trundling through ancient ruins, and bazaars teeming with dusty treasures. Or The Parthenon is one of the most visited sights in Athens. perhaps you will encounter a sleek cafe, art gallery or an outdoor cinema that serves ouzo under the stars. Greece's capital has been reinventing itself; the results could not be more charming. The metro routes are extensive, and the stations dazzle with marble and antiquities. Congested downtown streets have been turned into pedestrian walkways, greatly reducing Athens' notorious smog and noise. Hotels, museums and archaeological sites have been revamped. Gentrified districts—such as Gazi—host cafes, clubs and chic restaurants, which even boast smokefree sections. Athens' 19thcentury Acropolis Museum has been replaced by a fine new Acropolis Museum that has brought 21st-century, high-tech architecture to the city in the form of a stunning exhibition space.

Newsletter “Hellenistic Gold Jewellery in the Benaki Museum, Athens” by Dr Monica Jackson One of the most important developments involving the AAIA community since the last Newsletter was the publication of the book Hellenistic Gold Jewellery in the Benaki Museum, Athens written by AAIA Governor and Executive Board member Dr Monica Jackson and published as a collaborative project by the AAIA and the Benaki Museum, one of Greece’s premier cultural institutions. Dr Jackson is an acknowledged expert on jewellery of the Hellenistic period, those centuries that followed the death of Alexander the Great and which ran through to the incremental establishment of Roman rule in the eastern Mediterranean. In her most recent offering, she masterfully presents the history of the the Benaki Museum’s Hellenistic gold jewellery collection as well as the pieces themselves, which are simply outstanding. The collection rates among the most important of its kind in the world and this is most clearly illustrated in this publication. Dr Jackson has written a book that is a prime medium through which this fascinating material can be brought to the attention of an audience that extends far beyond the confines of academia. All these points were appreciated by the many people that attended the book’s launch in the magnificent surrounding of MacLaurin Hall at the University of Sydney on February 15. This launch followed a similar event in Athens, in December 2017, at the Benaki Museum itself, at which a number of speakers, including the Emeritus Director of the Benaki Museum (and now, sadly, late) Professor Angelos Delivorrias, presented the book to the Athenian public.
