Yocum This dissertation considers a spectrum of five distinct approaches that mid-twentieth century neo-Thomist Catholic thinkers utilized when engaging with the tradition of modern scientific psychology: a critical approach, a reformulation approach, a synthetic approach, a particular [Jungian] approach, and a personalist approach. This work argues that mid-twentieth century neo-Thomists were essentially united in their concerns about the metaphysical principles of many modern psychologists as well as in their worries that these same modern psychologists had a tendency to overlook the transcendent dimension of human existence. This work shows that the first four neo-Thomist thinkers failed to bring the traditions of neo-Thomism and modern psychology together to the extent that they suggested purely theoretical ways of reconciling them. -

Quidditas 77 The Right Stuff: Habitus and Embodied Virtue in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Alice F. Blackwell Louisiana State University, Alexandria One of the themes weaving in and out of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is that of virtue: Gawain’s shield proclaims his virtue, yet at the end of the Green Chapel scene, he exclaims vice has destroyed his virtue, leaving him “faulty and false.” This scene has troubled critics and students, however, for many consider his reaction excessive for his default on the rules of a courtly game. The present paper contends that the notion of virtue written for Gawain naturalizes embodied virtue. While both religious and lay writers tended to argue that one possessed predisposition to moral or political virtue at birth, both camps strenuously argued that the individual must choose to develop these virtues, often through disciplining the body and mind. -

The University of Southern Mississippi WIT IN THE EARLY MODERN LITERARY MARKETPLACE by Danny Paul Childers Abstract of a Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of The University of Southern Mississippi in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2014 ABSTRACT WIT IN THE EARLY MODERN LITERARY MARKETPLACE by Danny Paul Childers August 2014 The concept of wit undergoes a transformation in the sixteenth century from having associations with the intellect, with its cultural productions, and with classical study towards more direct associations with the writing trade and with clever wordplay. This transition, as I will demonstrate, relates specifically to tensions between humanist culture and the early modern literary marketplace. This dissertation begins by examining the early sixteenth century humanists' concept of wit and goes on to examine the presentation of the concept by four late sixteenth century writers—John Lyly (1553- 1606), Thomas Nashe (1567-1601), Robert Greene (1560-1592), and William Shakespeare (1564-1616). -

Wright, Ph.D. Nearly all of the brief Middle English lyric poems that began to appear in manuscripts during the first half of the thirteenth century are religious in nature, and nearly all either concern the passion of Christ or are prayers to his mother, Mary. Very often the two motifs appear in tandem, in poems that place both speaker and audience at the foot of Christ's cross where Mary is engulfed in a sorrow that the reader is asked to experience empathetically. This dissertation argues that the lyrics grew out of a prose meditative genre, in particular a Cistercian meditative genre related to twelfth-century exegesis of the Song of Songs, that offered readers a series of visual tableaux of events in the life of Christ to experience imaginatively. The passion of Christ was a central focus of this sort of meditation. The English Cistercian abbot Aelred of Rievaulx's De institutione inclusarum, a treatise addressed to his anchoress-sister, offered a model of this genre that was widely copied and imitated, and some of the earliest English religious lyrics appear either as part of those prose meditative texts or as appendices thereto. -

While he achieved fame during his lifetime as an author, philosopher, alchemist and astronomer, composing a scientific treatise on the astrolabe for his ten year-old son Lewis, Chaucer also maintained an active career in the civil service as a bureaucrat, courtier and diplomat. Among his many works, which include The Book of the Duchess, the House of Fame, the Legend of Good Women and Troilus and Criseyde, he is best known today for The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer is a crucial figure in developing the legitimacy of the vernacular, Middle English, at a time when the dominant literary languages in England were French and Latin. <b>Life</b> Geoffrey Chaucer was born in London sometime around 1343, though the precise date and location of his birth remain unknown. His father and grandfather were both London vintners; several previous generations had been merchants in Ipswich. (His family name derives from the French chausseur, meaning "shoemaker".) In 1324 John Chaucer, Geoffrey's father, was kidnapped by an aunt in the hope of marrying the twelve-year-old boy to her daughter in an attempt to keep property in Ipswich. The aunt was imprisoned and the £250 fine levied suggests that the family was financially secure—bourgeois, if not elite. -

Copyright by Colleen E. Kennedy 2015 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Abstract My dissertation elucidates olfactive discourses in early modern literature. I argue that an understanding of the smell-scape of the early modern world deepens our analysis of literary texts as familiar as those of Shakespeare, Donne, Dekker, Herrick, and Milton. Personal and bodily odors cannot be dichotomized into simple binaries of foul and fragrant, but rather were experienced as a complex and heady bouquet of competing scents. My analysis proves that personal and symbolic aromas seep into and affect the conventions of early modern literature in ways not previously recognized. Scent then, as now, functioned to conceal odors, to remove or obscure smells that might otherwise betray the wearer’s all too human imperfections, and to create alluring personal aromas. For this reason, animalistic scents—such as the popular perfume civet—occupy a complex place in early modern England because they mimic body odors that one might normally try to hide, yet were highly regarded scents. With the strong associations of scent with morality, artificial scent arouses suspicion, no matter how sweet the fragrance. By following the whiff of civet in early modern literature, I complicate the stereotypes of ! the perfumed courtier and the diseased prostitute, finding the olfactive language used to describe their stenches surprisingly does not differ that much from the royal scent of the monarch or the aroma of sanctity. -
