Dorsal profile of head gently curved; anterior tip of head forming an acute angle; jaws prominent, 4 strong canines anteriorly in each jaw; a large, curved ca- nine present on each side of rear of upper jaw in large individuals, though not apparent in small ones; roof of mouth toothless. Bodianus pulchellus is a distinctive and colourful species as it has a generally red body with a white horizontal stripe reaching just pass the mid-body on the lower side extending from the mouth, and a transition of red to yellow around the dorsal and anal fins (Fig. 1). Fin ray counts are: dorsal spines 9, dorsal soft rays 10, anal spines 10, and anal soft rays 3 (Smith, 1997). It grows to a length of 18cm (Gomon, 1978). This species does not show sexual dimorphism, and males and females cannot be distinguished easily. They have a tendency to hybridize with the closely related species, Bodianus rufus commonly known as the spanish hogfish. DISTRIBUTION. It is mainly dispersed around the Gulf of Mexico and the western Atlantic region from South Carolina in the USA extending to the Caribbean and Santa Catarina in Brazil (Floeter et al., 2003). It is also found around the São Tomé Island off the coast of Africa in the eastern Atlantic (Alfonso et al., 1999). According to the IUCN red list of endangered species, the spotfin hogfish currently has native occurrence in Trinidad and Tobago (IUCN, 2016). The Spanish hogfish is a slender fish with an appealing coloration as its body is mainly yellow with either a purple or blue highlight (McGinley, 2011) on the upper side of the body (Fig. 1). In shallow water this species adapts a blue upper body and in deep water a red upper body is seen (Smith, 1997). This species ranges from 20-40cm in length (McGinley, 2011) and is covered by large scales. The Spanish hogfish has a slimy outer layer of mucus which provides a protection against infection and parasites (Spanish Hogfish, 2016). Males are larger than females. This species exhibits sequential hermaphroditism which is the ability to change sex at some point in the fish’s life span. When a dominant male fish dies in a harem, the largest female fish will change sex (Hoffman et al., 1985). DISTRIBUTION. Spanish hogfish are found in the western Atlantic from Bermuda and southern Florida to the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, to southern Brazil (Fig. 2). Beukers James Cook University, Townsville, Queensland 4810, Australia ABSTRACT: Many fish species are cryptic by nature or show a negative response to divers. This may make traditional censusing techniques difficult to perform and the results obtained using these meth- ods may be inaccurate. This problem will be exacerbated in complex habitats, such as those found on coral reefs, because the cryptic species present will be even more difficult to locate and identify. Pre- dation studies on coral reefs have been especially hampered by this problem because many predatory species are cryptic and so it has been difficult to obtain reliable abundance estimates. This study tested a visual census technique that used bait to bring cryptic predatory fish into view. Results from this cen- sus were then compared to those from a traditional survey using belt transects, and to a patch reef tag- ging study where all individuals of 3 key species were located. The baited technique produced signif- icantly higher density estimates for 3 of the 4 most abundant cryptic species. The patch reef experiment demonstrated that the baited technique accounted for 85 to 96% of fish present. Censuses without bait observed only 40 to 61% of fish present. For mobile species, on the other hand, the baited census appeared to overestimate abundance, due to movement of fish into the census area. We therefore rec- ommend combining baited censuses of sedentary cryptic species with traditional censuses of mobile species to gain an accurate picture of piscivorous reef fish communities.
