PAST VETERINARIANS IN SOUTH AFRICA VOLUME 2 M – Z P J POSTHUMUS BVSc M.B.E. 10th EDITION 123 MAAG, ALFONS (2/7/1866 - 26/1/1933) 7 Born Edinburgh, Germany on 2/7/1886 he graduated f ~~~ the f university in Stuttgart in 1908. In 1914 he came to South, Africa as a Government veterinary Officer under the German Government, but was dismissed from his post when the country was captured by the South African Forces in 1915. From 1915 to 1919 he was ~unemployed as a veterinarian, but greatly assisted with the flu epidemic. For his work in this epidemic he was awarded the Red Cross Medal . In 1922 he, Schmid and Sigwart were appointed by the South West Africa administration and it is interesting to note that these three veterinarians were the only former German officials to be so re-employed. After his appointment he was stationed at Gobabis until his health failed. He died from cancer in his home town in Germany on 26/1/1933. MACDONALD, RODERICK (26/12/1874 - Born in Scotland on 26/12/1874 he qualified as a veterinarian at the university of Ontario Vet. College, Canada in 1891. In 1900 he came to South Africa as a Civil Veterinarian attached to the Army veterinary Department to take part in the Boer War. After the war he joined the volunteer corps i n 1903 and after serving as a trooper in its ranks was promoted to Vety Lieutenant on 15/11/1907 and transferred to the East Rand Mounted Rifles (left wing of the Imperial Light Horse). -

AN AFRICAN ALTERNATIVE Nordic Migration to South Africa, 1815-1914 During the 19th century migrations, tens of millions of Europeans exchanged their native lands for new homes beyond the oceans. Although the great majority made their way to North America, the other continents received their share, too. One of the least conspicuous groups of migrants consisted of those moving to South Africa, anp ' they are also amongst the least investigated. In this study the migration to South Africa has been examined in terms of the movement from the four Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. A comprehensive portrait is created of the African Alternative: its origins and causes, its historical development, its volume, patterns of geographical recruitment qnd composition. As cities strive to bid for the highest order in terms of maintaining and attracting both local and foreign investments as well as tourists, it is imperative to build socially cohesive, environmentally friendly and economically competitive cities as these attributes have become key essential. However, not every city has the financial means to undertake such obligations so they often resort to the formation of public-private partnerships, a phenomenon often termed as Business Improvement Districts, for the attainment of such goals. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT The Swazi kingdom grew out of the pressures associated with competition for trade and for the rich resources of Shiselweni. While centred on this area it acquired some of its characteristic features - notably a regimental system, and the dominance of a Dlamini aristocracy. Around 1815 the Swazi came under pressure from the South, and were forced to colonise the land lying north of the Lusutfu. Here they remained for some years a nation under arms, as they plundered local peoples, and were themselves swept about by the currents of the Mfecane. In time a more settled administration emerged, as the aristocracy spread out from the royal centres at Ezulwini, and this process accelerated under Mswati as he subdued recalcitrant chiefdoms, and restructured the regiments. -

Dada Abdullah and Company set sail for Durban from Bombay on 19 April 1893 and arrived in (427 Dr Pixley kaSeme Street) Durban on Tuesday 23 May 1893. Gandhi spent some twenty years in South Africa, returning to India in 1914. The Hills Above Pietermaritzburg: an Appreciation
THE HILLS ABOVE PIETERMARITZBURG: AN APPRECIATION P.G. Alcock May 2014 The residents of Pietermaritzburg are well-aware that the hills overlooking the city define Pietermaritzburg in a scenic context, and give it a particular sense of place. The optimum vantage point for viewing these hills is from the southern and eastern parts of the city, looking across the bowl-shaped Msunduzi River Valley.1 It is rather surprising that not much attention has been paid to the hills of Pietermaritzburg in articles and books about the city.2 A partial exception was a chapter in a volume published to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Pietermaritzburg in 1988.3 Specific details regarding the higher-lying land above the city are again sparse in this book, excluding maps showing the general topography, the suburbs and the natural vegetation. The book incorporates some early paintings of the settlement (circa the mid-1850s) with various hills in the background. These paintings reveal an appreciation of the terrain which does not appear to have been carried forward to more recent times.4 The hills have a special resonance, given the contrasting climates to the north and to the south of Pietermaritzburg. Many of the northern slopes are cool and well-watered with spectacular views and with remnants of verdant indigenous vegetation (although dominated by commercial forests) whereas the southern slopes are hot and dry and have limited ambience. Two commonly-touted names for Pietermaritzburg are the “The City of Choice” and perhaps more appropriately “The Green City”. In keeping with an environmental theme are the names “The City of Flowers” as well as “The Garden City”, and in a different context “The Heritage City”. -

MERAFONG CITY MUNICIPAL SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK 2019 ANNEXURE A IMPLEMENTATION PLAN CAPITAL INVESTMENT FRAMEWORK The Capital Expenditure Framework (CEF) as a component of the Municipal Spatial Development Framework (MSDF) is a requirement in terms of Section 21(n) of the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act, 2013. The intention of the Capital Investment Framework (CIF) is to close the gap between the spatial strategy and implementation on the ground. This is to be achieved using the spatial strategy and the detail provided in the Municipal Spatial Development Framework as the basis upon which other sector plans can be built, thus ensuring integration through a shared platform. A Capital Expenditure Framework has 4 key components namely spatial alignment, quantification of growth, technical assessment and financial alignment. This is the first attempt at an improved Capital Expenditure Framework and whilst the spatial component has been completed satisfactorily, the financial and infrastructure components are not at a satisfactory level. The municipality strives to adopt the new Integrated Urban Development Grant (IUDG) and as such the infrastructure and financial components will have to be added in coming years. This attempt is seen as a base to start from and expand upon. Many of the calculations and information available has not been included and some of it, such as the human settlement calculations are included in other parts of the MSDF. The municipality has a very difficult task of balancing its budget between the needs of social development, economic development and urban efficiency. The needs of the present must also be weighed against sustainability and viability in the future.
