Last week, the 1995 Homecoming Committee was prepared to change the process from the traditional popular vote to a part-vote, part-judged contest. After hearing complaints from some students that the change appeared to be racially-tainted, the committee agreed to revert to the old system. We see no reason to limit the power of the whole student body to select its own king and queen. Yes, it is a popularity contest, but that is the nature of events such s • as homecoming. It has always been that way and will continue to be that way. And as long as students willingly participate in this popularity contest, it shouldn't be taken away from them. However, we do not necessarily believe the rhetoric that it was a racially-driven idea to change the selection process. Some of the complaints come from people who could find racial overtones in just about anything. If, however, there were racial intentions, the people involved should simply grow up. If they are really afraid that the "majority" is not being represented, the people in the majority should display less apathy and cast their votes like all the other groups. Either way, we believe it is unfortunate that homecoming must be reduced to such petty squabbling.
