Clawhammer Illuminations What would THESE guys do? Five high-profile progressive clawhammer artists answer common questions concerning the banjo Clawhammer Illuminations What would THESE guys do? Five high-profile progressive clawhammer artists answer common questions concerning the banjo Online banjo forums are filled with all sorts of questions from players interested in instrument choices, banjo set up, personal playing styles, technique, etc. As valuable as these forums might be, they can also be confusing for players trying to navigate advice posted from banjoists who's playing experience might range from a few weeks to literally decades. It was these forum discussions that started me thinking about how nice it would to have access to a collection of banjo related questions that were answered by some of the most respected "progressive" clawhammer banjoists performing today. I am very excited about this project as I don't believe any comprehensive collection of this nature has been published before… Mike Iverson 1 © 2013 by Mikel D. Iverson Background Information: Can you describe what it is about your personal style of play that sets you apart from other clawhammer banjoists? What recording have you made that best showcases this difference? Michael Miles: As musicians, I believe we are the sum of what he have heard. So the more you listen, the richer you get. My personal musical style on the banjo is in great part rooted in Doc Watson and JS Bach. Through Doc Watson, I learned about the phrasing of traditional music. Through Bach, I learned the majesty and reach of all music.

  • Ronald Dean Rice- Audiophile, Musician & Engineer
Ronald Dean Rice- Audiophile, Musician & Engineer Anyone who thought there were only three Rice Brothers is encouraged to study bluegrass history. Ron Rice grew up playing acoustic bass and performing with his three brothers, Larry, Tony and Wyatt. He’s the third youngest of the four and is now retired from a long career in power generation. While proud of the family’s musical heritage and impact, Rice is a highly talented, yet modest man who has created his own path. Currently living with his wife Terry in Falls Church, VA, his story is an important piece of bluegrass music history. Rice was born in Lynwood, California on February 22, 1955 to Herbert H. and Dorothy L. Rice, with his namesakes being Reagan and Martin. The Rice family resided in the suburbs of Los Angeles until the summer of ’65 then moved considerably along the east coast, as Dad Herb was in construction. Rice started playing the bass at age six with his brothers Larry playing mandolin, Tony playing guitar and Andy Evans playing banjo. This band was known as the Haphazards. Rice notes, “We played a lot of local bluegrass gigs around the Los Angeles area, amusement parks, auditoriums, coffee houses and pizza parlors. Other shows we played in the early sixties were more folk related, back in the Hootenanny days. I remember being back stage with and playing on the same bill as Peter, Paul and Mary, the Kingston Trio, and the Stoneman Family just to mention a few.” Rounder Records-The Rice Brothers 1 (1989) and The Rice Brothers 2 (1994) Rice recalls that the exact origin of the first Rice Brothers project remains something of a mystery.

  • Produced by David Grisman for Dawg Productions 13 - OPUS 38 13 - FANNY HILL on His “Opus 38”
The music on this recording marks a special reunion, a rare live duo performance of David “Dawg” Grisman and Tony “T” Rice, who started an acoustic music revolution in the Bay Area in the late 1970s with the original David Grisman Quintet. For people around the band, like myself, they were known as the “Gasoline Brothers”—a nickname Tony started using while recording the Disc 1 (1st Set) Disc 2 (2nd Set) first Quintet album, when their playing was so hot they were about to explode. There was a correctness to the sound. They 01 - INTRO 01 - INTRO complemented each other so well, one of those rare pairings 02 - GOOD OLD MOUNTAIN DEW 02 - ANTIQUE MANDOLIN that share a certain chemistry, an inner clock, a way of hearing and interacting musically that few musicians have. 03 - EIGHTH OF JANUARY 03 - TURN OF THE CENTURY 04 - TONE POEMS INTRO 04 - O’BANION INTRO The next release by the “Gasoline Brothers” was Tone Poems, a 05 - I DON’T WANT YOUR MANDOLINS, MISTER 05 - O’BANION’S WAKE duet project showcasing historical vintage instruments, released in 1994. By that time “Dawg” and “T” were living legends, 06 - SAMBINO 06 - BANKS OF THE OHIO steeped in tradition while carrying their musical torches together 07 - WATSON BLUES 07 - DAWG AFTER DARK into uncharted territory. There were precious few live shows in support of Tone Poems. including one I was lucky to attend in 08 - RALPH’S BANJO SPECIAL 08 - DAWG’S RAG Carmel, California! 09 - I AM A PILGRIM 09 - MILL VALLEY WALTZ 10 - SWING ’42 10 - DEVLIN’ This recording from 1997 is a mixture of tunes from Tone Poems along with some bluegrass and jazz classics mixed with dawg 11 - WILDWOOD FLOWER 11 - FIDDLE TUNE MEDLEY originals.
