The music on this recording marks a special reunion, a rare live duo performance of David “Dawg” Grisman and Tony “T” Rice, who started an acoustic music revolution in the Bay Area in the late 1970s with the original Quintet. For people around the band, like myself, they were known as the “Gasoline Brothers”—a nickname Tony started using while recording the Disc 1 (1st Set) Disc 2 (2nd Set) first Quintet album, when their playing was so hot they were about to explode. There was a correctness to the sound. 04 - TONE POEMS INTRO 04 - O’BANION INTRO The next release by the “Gasoline Brothers” was Tone Poems, a 05 - I DON’T WANT YOUR , MISTER 05 - O’BANION’S WAKE duet project showcasing historical vintage instruments, released in 1994. By that time “Dawg” and “T” were living legends, 06 - SAMBINO 06 - BANKS OF THE OHIO steeped in tradition while carrying their musical torches together 07 - WATSON 07 - DAWG AFTER DARK into uncharted territory. There were precious few live shows in support of Tone Poems. including one I was lucky to attend in 08 - RALPH’S SPECIAL 08 - DAWG’S RAG Carmel, California! 09 - I AM A PILGRIM 09 - MILL VALLEY WALTZ 10 - SWING ’42 10 - DEVLIN’ This recording from 1997 is a mixture of tunes from Tone Poems along with some bluegrass and classics mixed with dawg 11 - WILDWOOD FLOWER 11 - TUNE MEDLEY originals. The “Gasoline Brothers” were certainly on fire this 12 - SHENANDOAH 12 - SONG FOR TWO PAMELAS night.
